WEDNESDAY KVBNINO, NOV. 1. 1882,
MB. WALLACE ACCEPTS.
HGlTHla Rmmbi and Places Himself
UoMtlyadSqaMlyon tbe Ticket.
Er-Sen&tor Wallace has accepted the
Democratic nomination for Senator in 'the
Thirty-fourth district. He has issued the
following address to hin constituents :
Clearfield, Pa., Oct. 28, 1882. To
the people of the Thirty-fourth senatorial
district ot Pennsylvania : lam a candidate
for your votes for the office of senator. In
accepting this candidacy I have had in
view tbe unfortunate circumstances at
tending the action of tbe senatorial con
ference and the honest purposes of the
masses of our people. I have not sought
the nomination. The condition of roy
family and my business both forbade a re
entry into public life now. If I had wanted
tbe place I would havo frankly told you
so. The action of the Democratic organ
izations of the three counties, the earnest
request of friends whose wishes I must
respect and the possibility of the loss of
tbe district to my party, are tbe reasons
that have controlled my personal wishes.
Since the expiration of my term in the
United States Senate I have given what
energy I have to tbe development of ad
ditional transportation facilities for the
great mineral wealth of the three counties
comprising the district, and if I am chosen
senator my hands will be strengthened for
the completion of that (work, now fairly
launched.
My life has been spent and will proba
bly be ended among you. Your interests
arc mine, and in the practice of my pro
fession and the use of my personal inllu
ence here, the preservation of law and
order has been a controlling thought.
1 have acted on the belief that men who
labor have the right either singly or in
masses to quit that labor for any reason
sufficient to them, and that they have no
right to prevent those from working who
wish to do so. I believe in liberty regula
ted by law, and have no sympathy either
for that freedom that is license or with
that power that becomes oppression. In
an official career of nearly twenty years,
no act, or vote, or speech of mine cau bo
founcHhat places mo upon the sido of
those who oppress the men who toil. In
tbe vindication of the law at the
bar, I have tried not to be vin
dictivo, and havo always sought
what I believed to bo the best interests
of all of our people. No fair minded man
will proscribe the advoeato for the fearless
pcrlormance of his sworn duty, nor cau
the policy of any party bo subordinated to
the demands of those who violate law.
Neither corrupt practices nor law-breaking
can or ought to bo tolerated in the
control of a great organization. I shall
appeal neither to your passions nor your
pockets. I am a Democrat, and the re
cord of my past official life must bo the
guaranty for its future, if choseu. I be
lieve in tbe honest rulo of the unbou;ht
massas, aud will, if elected, so shape my
official course as to servo and protect the
material interest of tho whole people, aud
aid in bringing retrenchment and honest
administration to the government of the
state. Respectfully,
William A. Wallace.
