Tb Chicago Mas Strikes a New Vein or
Jfavrattve A Tate For the Toddlers.
CLicago Tribune.
One day Lacy and her brother were
Going to the Place -where the ice-cream
was kept. Lucy was Trotting Along,
holding Charlic'u hand, Sho heard a
Strange Noise ia the street near them.
Looking, Bho saw two boys with a little
ecru Dog. One boy had Tied a String to
the poor little dog's tail, and on the Other
End of the string was a deserted Oyster
Can.
" Oh, brother," said Lucy, " seo what
the Wicked Boys are doing."
And then the tears filled her eyes, be
cause she felt Sorry for the dog.
Then Charles asked the boys to let the
dog go. They would not do this, but said
they would Sell him the dog for Twenty
five Cents.
If wo Buy the dog, Luey, you can
Have no Ice Cream, for I have only
Twenty-five Cents in my Pocket," said
Charles.
Then Lucy was very sad, for she Loved
ice-cream dearly, but still she knew it was
her Duty to prevent the dog from Suf
fering. So for a moment she was Silent, and
then Looking Up to her brother bho said
in her pretty way : " You Kick m the
Ribs of the boys, dear brother, aud I will
HnM.lc the Pnp up th) Alley."
And so Lucv Had her Ice Crcatr. after
all.
Lucy' Facetious Fattier.
From the Chicago Tribune.
After Lucy, about whoso kindness to
the little ecru dog with the can on his tail
you read the other day, had grown up to
be a Young Lady sho was quite good look
ing, and wore a great many nice clothes.
She had been to Boarding School, and
when she came home again had forgotten
how to do any Woik. But sho could play
the "Maiden's Prayer" and the "Battle of
Prague" on the piano very Nicely while
her Mother was hangicg out clothes in the
back yard Monday afternoous. But al
though Lucy could do all this, her Papa
did not seem to bo satisfied, for ho was a
person of no Culture, who said girls ought
to know hovr to Cook and be of some
Earthly Acsounl around tbo house. He
would say the-e Cruel Words to Lucy some
times, and then tbo would go up stairs
three steps at a time, Slam the door of her
room and Weep Bitterly. But before
evening came and it was time for her young
man to Show Up the teats would all be
gouo and sho would put pawdcr on her
face aud tio down into the parlor about
8 o'clock looking Pretty Siick. And when
the Young Man cfBif fhe would run to tha
door witli a Radiant. Smile aud have such
an ingenue look on htr face that the Young
Man would never suspect her of sometimes
gettiug vcr Angry aud slamming things
atound. Aud alter Lucy aud the Young
Man had B.it in th parlor about three
hours and Whiled Away the Evening he
would start for home, and she would go
with hi i to the door and kiss him On the
Quiet.
Ono evening while Luey was waiting for
the Young Man her father came into the
room. Just then she begau to sing a song
called "Will My Darling Como Again .'"
When she hau iiui.shed her Fathor looked
at her steadily for a moment, and then j
said, "I don t think he will it he eve!
Drops on yout Warble."
Little ulmrlle'ii lillnd r-col.
Charles was a little boy who loved his
jlothrr rlealy, and whenever shot old him
anything he "as very careful to obey. One
day in the Spring, when the birds wete
singiHg anI the buds on the apple trees
ttlmof t ready to burst into beautilul white
blossoms, Charles asked his mother for
Ten Cents to buy Marbles, for the ground
was getting dry and the other boys were
beginning to enjoy their favorite spott.
" You can have the money, my son," siiJ
the mother, " but yon must promise me
not to play for Keeps, and every night
that you can como homo and tell roc
truthfully that ycu have not disobeyed
your Mamma I will aive you a huge Bed
Apple." And then she kissed him Fondly
and he went gayly away to School.
But before Charles had gone very far ho
mst Thomas Tough, who was a Bad boy.
Charles to! I Thomas about tho Ten Cents j
that his Mother had given him to buy
Marbles with, auu also told htm that ho
could not. play for Keeps, unless ho was
williug to go without the Red Apple.
When Thomas heard this he said : " Givo
me tho Marbles yon are going to buy ar.d
I will play with them for Keeps, and
after School is out we will Divide what 1
have won, for I am a Superior Player.
Then you can truthfully tell your Mother
that you havo not been playing for Keeps,
and will receive the Red Apple." So
Charles gave his Marbles to Thomas and
after School was out a-ked him how many
Marbles be had Won. " I did not Win,'"
replied Thomas. " I struck ! Hard
Crowd and lost." Then Charles w is sad,
for he was a pretty Tijjht-Fistcd little
boy, aud begau to Cry. But presently he
said to Thomas : " You are a naughty
boy and I halo you Very Much." Anil
then Thomas hit Charles in tho Nose and
threw him down in the dirt, making his
new panties look very bad indeed.
So when Charles reached home ho told
his Papa all about his troubles. When he
had finished his Papa said to him : " You
don't know as much as Thompson's Colt
and I am going to Take a Crack at you
myself." Then he gavo Charles a good
Licking and bent him to bed without any
Supper. And when Charles had lain on
his Stomach for awhile, because ho felt
more Comfortable that way, he said to
himself : " No more Blind Pool for me."
Do you not think he had a Great Head,
children ? I do.
