How Bonanza Mackey Kscaped Being Kid napped and Held for a Ransom. New York Sun. " Bonanza " Mackoy, of California, passed through Chicago en route for New York. He was accompanied by W. S. IJobart, John M. Harper and A. A. Hickox, of San Francisco, and by Colonel M. G. Gillett, who joined the party at Lako Valley, New Mexico, for the pur pose of escorting them through the cow boy infected region between Lake Valley aid the Santa Fe railroad, a distance of about thirteen miles. Colonel Gillett says tbat the so-called cowboys of that region aie simply organized bands of outlaws, ro cruited from the criminal classes through out the Eastern states, who escape to that couutry, and when ono of them is once en rolled and recognized as a member of the cowboys,4ie may be considered as per fectly safe from any service or warrants or extradition papers. They have estab lished as perfect a system of brigandage as prevails in Italy, and conduct their op erations on muoh the same principle tbat is, to kidnap wealthy men and hold them to ransom. "Whenovcr Senator Jones, who is interested in mining proper ty in New Mexico, visits that region, ho always assumes an incognito in order to escape the notice of the brigands. Mr. Mackey failed to adopt this precaution, ami Colonel Gillett, getting wind of the f.ict tbat a reward had been ottered for the capture of Mr. Maokey by tho captain of Uie cowboys, be volunteered the ser vices of himself and a strong party to es cort the bonanza king and his friends to the railroad. Although no effort was made to capture the millionaire a number of small bands of the outlaws were en countered, and Mr. Mackey expresses himself as satisfied that nothing but the presence of his escort prevented them from "holding him up." At least he says that they would have secured noth ing but a five dollar note and a nickel watch for their trouble, b:it he congratu lates himself oa disappointing them to that extent. Train No. 0 on tho Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railroad, coming east, was fired on by cowboys at Lakiu. Ten or twelve bullets struck tho train, shattering the glass in the windows and penetrating the cars in several places. A special train, inbharge of Sheriff Hinckio, has depaited and a telegram received says that three of tho gang Lave been arrested. The last report is that the party were housed in a dugout ami surrounded. luo uoago City force will undoubtedly capture or kill all tho parties. There is no possibility of their ef cane, though Ui"v may make a fight.
