Mv love and I went wandering hand In band Upcn the grayea shore one winter day ; The small white waves crept slowly toward the land. Then turned again Jlke children in their play, ' But to return oneo more, xnothought they'd greet Mv love, and lay their homage at her feet Ah ! they woul d kiss thy feot, my dear," 1 cried, ( ' E'en nature years to pay thee homage due. The ocean sprites would woo thee lrom my side. And deem thee like their kindred, aye, un true, They shall nottonch thee " Then I toak her hand. And drew her neat er to the '.wide safe laud. B wltt then tho envious sea came nearer-by. And washed hor fooutep3 from thfi dark ling shore, It would not even let them silent He, l!t other touch than his should sweep them o'er, 'So, dearest !" said I, ' would thy love should be Hut mine alono, as mine Is but tor thee !" All the Year Round. Mo More Oate tagging. Gennantown Telgrapb, Some years ago our attention was in vited to what was considered as an inevi table and remediless evil of the sagging of farm Rates, and tho question was re peatedly put if fanners were forever to submit to these imperfect means of en trance to their fields, barnyards, etc.? Our reply was that tho times honored "bars "must be again adopted, for all things considered, they were decidedly to be preferred to these sagging gates. What, indeed, is more annoying than a sag ging gate ? It is forever oat of order. It may be stiffened up one day, and tho next it will begin again to droop and in a little while to drag again again, -and away goes a hinge, and this costs time aud money to repair. There has lately been, however, a sub stitute introduced for tho farm-gate, whioh is more efficient and convenient, and which reqaires no hinges, chains, clasps, or a gate post. It is simply a panel of fence made of inch boards, say four slab3 six to eight inches wide, nailed together by cross-pieces of the same, tho cross-pieces commencing about one foot from each end. At the back end of the panel two undressed common fence posts are set, ono, the side on which tho "gata" is to open, about au inch and a-half farther back, and tho posts to be only about tho aatno distance apart. From one post to the other suitable supports are nailed, on which this end of the panel is to rest and move. At the head of the panel an ordinary fence post is set, the holes corresponding to the ends of the slabs in the panel, which can, if necessary, be reduced a little in width and tho four are to fit in the holes of the post. This panel can be moved easily can be carried round lully is equally as good as a gate has no posts to sag no hinges to rust and break, or any iron appliances iu the way of a fasteuin it all aud will not cost more thau a sixth or tenth as much as au ordinary gate. Any farmer who can handle a saw and drive a nail, ought to be able to make such an affair without farther instruction. '1I Ureftung !u Autumn. Genu. niton u Telegraph. The recommendation we see in many quaiteisto top dress glass lauds in au tumn we cannot wholly endorse. While we have no doubt of the efficacy of this suggestion, in a general sense, and have it advocated we think under certain con ditions, some grass- lands would be mom benefitted if tbe : pplication weic made early in the spriug. Iu fields where the ground has a tendency to lieavo, throw ing up the grass and exposing the roots to the direct action of the frost, autumn top Jressinjr, which will protect the ground, is much to be preicrreJ, and the applica tion can be made either with the after math, sttaw or manure, as the condition of the coil may teem to lequire. But if the ground is not 'iabls to heave, a coat of manure as early iu the spring as it can be applied, not lumpy, and spread uni formity, will secure a heavier crop of grass. There need be no fear of the manure in terfering with the mowing of tho crop or the making of the hay, iuasmuch as we have found that tho top dressing is soon beaten down by the rains and is quite out of reach of the operations of harvesting by the time that period ariives. "Vo are not merely satisfied of the correctness of this view from our own experience but from that of numerous farmers whose opinions on any subject of practical farming can at alltimes be relied upon. m m A Bear Killed bj Women. Wood ElverTlmes. Last week Mrs. Marston, during the ab sence of her husband, was doing tho week's family washing in the back kitchen of their home, near Galena, when she heard a great noise among the pigs in the yard. Opening the door she saw a large black bear trying to walk off with ono of tbe pigs. The other pigs had climbed out of the pen and scattered in every direction, and two large dogs that had been out on several bear-hunts stood at a safe distance, perfectly cowed. Mrs. Marston rushed for the boiler of scalding water, which she emptied upon the head of tho bear while it was trying to retain hold upon the pig. ber daughter attacked the bear with an axe and the two dogs came to their sup port. Mrs. Marston does not know how it occurred, but in five minutes the bear was dead, with a dozen deep gashes from the axe in its head and shoulders, its hide nearly peeled off by the scalding water, both cf it eyes scalded and closed, and tho dogs hanging to it. .That night the old tuau was asked if he would have pork chop or bear steak, and couldn't make it out until tho affair was described.
