'w;'""'' wfrgtwyffyyyty g i.. ;ai m tutcllffiriicri THURSDAY EVENING, OCX. 12. 1882,' MILL&IS' TENNYSON. Soto Eauoaate ot the Iroet and the lecture la Hcuonnt Tba London times says : No memorial of a writer whose name ntands so high and bright before the world as that of Alfred Tennyson can fail to arouse interest. rWhateirer may be the placohe.is destined' to hold in the hierarchy of poetfr and criticism Las not yet said its last word upon the point it is undeniable that he has eivon a new charm to life, has kepi alive the aaored lamp of song'' in a rather prosaio-and utilitarian age, and has even justified the existence of an office formerly held by Nahum Tates and Pyes. His early efforts, if not free from unfortu nate conceits, were dignified by rare beauty of thought and expression, and the pro mise they held forth was more than re deemed ylhe fruits of bis genius at his maturity. Balf a century baa elapsed since ho made his first appearance in the arena of letters, but the pen has not yet dropped from his hand. It was once maintained , that the gift of poetry is possessed only by the young. "Mon sieur," said the Due de Montausier, the presumed original of Aloeste in the "Mi santhrope," to the great Corneillo, whose creativo power declined after his thirty fourth year. "Monsieur, quaud j'etais jeune je faisais de jolis vers," soon to bs forgotten ; " a present que je puis vieux moil genie est He! (it : oroyez-moi, lain-ons lair" des vers a I joiuuicssG.'-" Mr. Ten nysoa supplies one of a fuw remarkable instaaees to fcho contrary. It is 'true that wo can no longer expect him to renew his best achievements, but his later produc tions, ' The Cup " in especial, have much of the far-reaching imagination and force of word painting which assuro to his " Arthurian " and other poem3, a lasting place in English literature. In the brief est glance at his work, too, it bbould be remembered that his influence has inva riably been for good refreshing, purify ing, ennobling. Of him, indoed, we may say, as of another poot endeared to us by golderi memories, " ho never wrote a line which, dying, ho would wish to blot." It was only in the fitness of things that such a mau as tho author of La Mart tP Arthur and Loclcsley Hall should havo a place on the canvas ot tho Reynolds of his time ; and within the last, low years, as everybody knows, this desideratum has been supplied. IIow wo-l Mr. Millbs has executed his task wo need hardly say. Dispensing with accessories, he represents Mr. Tennyson standing in his quaintly cut cloak against a background of shadow, directly facing the beholder, and with tho ample.-felt hat in t his hand. Slightly idealized, tho portrait may yet be accepted as strikingly true, particularly in the pene trating and half inquiring expression of the eyes, generally, perhaps, taeaoo has a somewhat sad and pensive appearance, as though the spirit in which la Memoriam was written had returned to him during the sittings. Mr. Oldham Barlow has just executed a faithful and fini&hed reproduc tion in mezzotint of this picture, and the public may bo congratulate:! on having within their reach a finely artistic record in his old xge of a man to whom many of them owe so large a debt of gratitude. Uinr a Wmnau Keeps Accounts. From tho Atlanta Constitution. It is a touching sight to see a woman begin to make up her expenses, having firmly icsoived to put down every cent she spend:!, so a3 to find out how to economize, and where all the money goes. Procuring a traiill book, she makes due entry, and on the Monday after tho first Saturday in whisk her husband brings home his pay, she carefully tears the margiu off a news paper and, with a bluut pencil, strikes a trial balance something in this way : John brought niu home $48.40, aud $1.43 I had is &49.U3, and 81.00 1 lent Mrs. Dixon is $50.93 but hold on, I ought not to enter that, because when she returns it, it'll go down. That was $10.93, aud what have I done with that ? Then she puts down tho figures, leaving out the items to save time a process which enables her to leave out most of the items'to where a round sum is involved, on the supposition that they have already been put down. As thus : Six dollars and fourteen cants for moat, and 10 cents for celery, and 10 cents on the street cars, and a bad 5 cent pieoe i got in exchange, aud $2.81 I paid tho milkman who owes me 19 cents that's $3, and 15 cents at church, and the gro ceries they were cither $15.00 or 1C.G0, and I don't remember which they were, bat I guess it musthave been $15.G0, for the grocer said that if I would give him a dime ho would give me half a dollar, which would make even change, aud I couldn't, because the smallest I had was a quarter and $2.75 for mendiug Katie's shoes, which is tho last money that shoe maker ever gets from me, and 10 cents for celery no, I put that down. Finally she sums up her trial-bafemco sheet, aud finds that it foots up $G4.2S. which is about $15 more than she had originally. Sbe goes over the list several times aud checks it caret ully, but all the items are correct, and the is just about in despair when her good angel hints that there may be a possible mu-tako in the addition. Vctia?' up.n -uc suggestion she foots hi the coluinu aud finds that the total is $44.28, and that according to the principles of the arithmetic, she ougb' to havo $5.65. Then she counts her oash several times, the result varying from 1.40 up to $1.97, but then she happily discov ers that she has bsc: mis-t ikiug a $2 gold piece for a cent, and lemembors that bhe gave the baby a trade dollar to cnt its gum with. On the whole, she has come within 80 cents of a balance, aud that, she says, is close enough, and she enters in one lino of the account book: "Dr. by household expenses," so much ; and is very happy till she remembers, just bei'oro going to bod, that sha hid omitted $2.75 for her husband's bat.
