THE UB1CAGOES CHAMPIONS.
The Wmm Club Wins the- League J?en
Baat or the Third Consecutive Season .
The baseball season closed Saturday.
The schedules hare been nearly played
through by all the clubs, and those games
that could not be played within the speci
fied season could not in any way have
effected the result of the contests. Accord
ing to the schedule of the league, which
is the championship contest, Chicago has
once more won the pennant of the national
league. The offioers of the Providence
club contend that an agreement was en
tered into some time- ago, between the
Chicago and Providence managers, when
the two great teams were running so close
that neither could claim any advantage,
that a new series of nine games should be
played between them after the close of the
regular season to decide the championship
regardless of the result of the scheduled
games. Chicago having won the cham
pionship according to the league schedule,
is entitled to the pennant, and seems dis
posed, naturally, to claim it. Providence
says that if the agreement between it and
Chicago is declared unconstitutional it will
insist upon Chicago playing its last three
games with Buffalo over again, as
they were scheduled for Buffalo and
were played in Chicago, but by spe
cial permission of the league presidents, a
question which was voted upon at the re
cent meeting of the league, at the Conti
nental hotel. All sorts of rumors are
afloat iu baseball circles about the dissent-inn
between Chicago and Providence
breaking up the league, and causing the
formation of new organizations to be
knon as the Eastern and Western
Ica.tH-.. such organizations to take the
places (if the present league aud American
associations. It is possible, however,
that the future seasons will go on as they
have in the past. The season has been a
remarkable one in many respects. It has
marked a wonderful revival of interest on
the part of the public, in the national
game. Never before was the struggle
lor the league championship so
closely and bitterly contested, and
there is not the least doubt that
fit) playing has bean honest and ear
liest. All of the clubs, excepting the
Worcesters, have prospered financially,
and even the Baltimore club, which has
been far in the rear in the American asso
ciation contest, has coined monoy for its
managers. The league alliance clubs have
made money, and taking it all through,
the season has been one of the most grati
fying in the history of the game. The
situation among the league clubs at the
close of tho season of 1882 is as follows :
Chicago champions, Providence, second,
Buffalo third, Boston fourth, Cleveland
fifth, Detroit sixth, Troy seventh aud
Worcester eighth. The following schedule
shows tho number of games won and lost
by each club iu the league :

There may be some trouble beforo tho
Philadelphia and Metropolitan club3 are
regularly admitted to the league. Troy
and Worcester do not want ' to go out.
They claim that they have lived up to all
requirements and cannot be put out
legally. But there are six clubs against
them, and at tho December meeting the
probabilities are that they will have to go.
It is a sucidal policy to play leaguo clubs
in such little places as Troy and Worces
ter, when clubs from the best paying
cities in the country are wanting to get
in.
fhe American Association.
With this week the championship tables
end. Some of the scheduled games of the
American association have not been played
for want of time, but they could make no
material difference. Cincinnati had a
good lead, with the Athletic second. Tho

WESTERN BOMAN'CK.
The Had Loss Sustained by a Fair sibyl.
Chicago Trioune.
" God help me now !"
Sibyl Sartoris, as she stood benoath the
grateful shade of locust trees that sensuous
day in June, when the kissing winds of
summer were balmy with tho perfume of
the rose leaves that tho storm of tho pre
vious evening bad scattered along tho
gravel walks of Coast Cliff castle, spoke
theso works in a dreamy, languid fashion.
" Qod only knows how I have suffered for
your sake, Bertram McMnrtry," the girl
said, plucking as she spoke a blossom
from the bush that was flaunting its scar
let beauties so saucily against the vivid
green of tie closely trimmed lawu. " And
you, little rosj leaf, "she continued, press
ing the velvety petals of the flower against
lips that were equally soft and crimson,
"you would not, if you could, even whis
per my secret to the world, for you, too,
have troubles and are buffeted about by
the cruel winds that blow so rudely agaiust
thy pretty face. Not even the star eyed
pansies or the modest violets that nod so
demurely in the summer zephyrs shall
know my secret," and with a little laugh
that was half a sob Sybil started for the
melon patch.
But ere the little bunionless feet that
peeped out so coquettishly from beneath
the fleecy white dress had taken many
steps Sibyl felt a touch upon her off
shoulder. Turning suddenly, she stood
face with Bertram McMurtry. He was a
strong, manly fellow, and the rich bock
beer tones of his voice thrilled her very
blood.
" Why are you sad ?" he asked.
Tho pretty red lips are drooping now
and the hazel eyes dimmed by tears that
cannot be repressed.
" Do you still love me, Bertram ?" she
asks.
" You know I love you dearly," he re
plies. " As much as you did last Thursday ?"
and the pretty face looks into his with a
pleading expression that shows how she
has staked her all upon that love.
" Justjasmuch," he answers, drawing
her lithe form over in his ward.
"Then," she says, "I will tell you
everything. And, oh. I am so desolate,
Bertram, so desolate."
" What is the matter, my darling ?" he
asks, bending ever her in alarm.
" All lis lost," she says. "All, all!"
" All what ?"
Nestling close to themanwho3e matinee
tickets she loves, Sibyl says in low
agonized tones : " All my chewing gum "
aud then her head falls upon his shoulder
amid a storm of sobs.
Kulalie's Xtelic.
:As Eulalie McGirlygrit 's words floated
upon the soft air of a June afternoon and
fell upon the air of Berwick'Hetherington,
who was swinging lazily in .a hammock
that hung beneath the larches, he smiled
the cold, cynical smile he had learned in
Kenosha, and then he raised himself on
one elbow and fell out of the hammock.
The noise attracted Eulalie's attention
and she came to the window, holding a
shoe in her band. Leaning out over the
easement, she was about to offer words of
condolence and sympathy to Berwick,
when her foot slipped, and the loud crash
of furniture which followed so startled
the girl that she dropped the shoe
" Will this patient ever recover?" asked
a visitor at a noted insane asylum.
"It is a hopeless case," replied the
physician. "He was brought to the hos
pital nearly two years ago dreadfully
mangled and when his health was re
stored reason had fled. His one idea is
that the court house is falling on
him."
"We have kept the secret well, daugh
ter," said Mrs. McQirlygirt to Eulalie one
summer afternoon.
"YeB,"was the reply. "But do you
know that I have never worn the shoe
since that day?"
" How foolish notional you are darling,"
said the mother. "You might at least
give it to some poor family who have no
home to protect them from the cold."
"No," answered the girl. "It is a
sacred relic, and I shall always keep it to
remind me of one who might have been
my husband."
