" Do you know," said a man who was
selling jewelry from a dry goods box to a
reporter for the Atlanta Constitution,
" that the Americans aro tho easiest hum
bugged people ofanyiu tlic world? It
lis true, ana x uave uaipea to uutnou
them about as much as tue average mau
Somebody had just been reading au ac
count of the LouisviKj lottery drawing,
which Drought forth this speech :
" Can't you tell us some of your experi
ence in that lino? " asked a man near.
" Well, you would laugh to know what
fools people make of themselves some-
, times. About two years ago 1 was down
, in Brunswick, whcie I saw a fellow run
ning a perfectly square game, but which
was the most out and out steal I ever
heard of. His plan was simple, and hun
dreds of the very best people of the town
flocked to give him a trial. lie rented a
store and put a show case across a counter
in the centre. In the show case he had, I
know, my hat full of ten and twenty dol
lar gold coins, piled in a heap in one cor
ner, and in tho other about tho same
sized pile of silver dollars. A dico box
and six dico completed his outfit. By
paying half a dollar ho had one throw
with the dice. If he threw six sixes ho
took the entire pile of gold ; if he threw
six aces ho was entitled to all the silvor.
Of course, no one ever threw all the sixes,
neither was it possible to get the aces to
come all in a bunoh. A man might as
well expect to get struck by lightuing
from a cloudless sky at noonday as to
throw six aces : it is almost an impossi
bility, that's all. Well, tho fellow made
several hundred dollars and left."
" Did you ever hear how easy it is to
fool a man with soap?" continued the
talker. "Wo street men know, that as
an old story, of course. I was down at
Troy, Ala., several mouths ago, when a
fellow came along most strapped. lie
went to a grocery store, bought a few bars
of this transparent soap, cut it into small
pieces about tho size of one's thumb,
wrapped it iu colored tissue paper very
neatly and then covered tho package with
tin foil, sprinkling tho whole with a bottlo
of cologne to give it a good smell. Well,
sir, tho fellow got on a box aud soon
gathcicd a crowd by nice talking, and
proposed to take out all the greatc from
his hats, coats, &c, that could bo brought
iu. Tho lirst caso presented was tho city
marshal, who walked up with a great
spot in his coat which ho wanted taken
out. Tho fellow carried a sponge well
saturated with benzino and arnica, which
of itself will take out almost anything,
aud by using a bit of soap, soon had tho
marshal's coat entirely frco from grease.
That btarted tho soap sales, and in two or
thrco hours, it being Saturday and a crowd
iu town, tho soap man had sold $3G worth,
nearly all of which was clear proiit."
Stopping to draw a long breath, tho
jewelry man continued his iute testing
story. " I tell you you can humbug any
body. I am not unlike tho rcsc of the
world. I believo I could bite at my own
tricks if I could only get in tho crowd.
" While I was at Brunswick, Ga., soma
time ago, I took revengo ou tho town by
playing what wo term give away rack
et.' It's a mighty lino thing to play, but
a very datigcrous ono in some localities.
I had been usiug a big umbrella, largo
enough to cover fifty people, when one
uight ou tho sttect a crowd ol bailors, led
on by sonio of tho town boys, threw rot
ten eggs at tho umbrolla and broke up
the crowd. Then I resolved ou tho 'give
away racket.' A fellow has to bo mighty
careful about working it, or ho will' get
caught out. It cau only be played once
in a town.
" Tho way to do it is this : Got u lot of
liuo gold rings which cost about a dollar a
dozen, and propose to bo advertising some
big gold concern iu new York. I called
mino tho great brazed gold of San Fran
cisco, btated that I would show the crowd
a thing or two, and soon got them inter
ested. First, I made a speech iu which I
stated my business ; then I commenced to
offer the rings at any price from two cents
up, telliug them that they could not be
bought for less tbau $-1 apiece at a jewel
er's. I let out about twenty rings at two
cents, and then asked everybody who had
bought them to hold them up. Instantly
every ring was in the air. 'How,' said 1,
addressing the crowd, this is your monoy
is it?' 'Yes,' said a dozen. 'And you
give it froely for tho rings ?' ' Yes,' came
again iu chorus. ' Very well ; here's
twonty cents for you sir ; and twenty
cents for you sir ; and so ou aiouud the
crowd. They commenced to wonder what
on earth I meant, said I was crazy, and a
lot of other things ; but I told them I was
advertising goods for my house, and had
plenty moro things to give away. Next
I took up some of my handsome diamond
studs, which, 1 explained, wore Lake
George diamonds, equal to any ou earth,
&c, and that I was going to sell them
from tweuty-iivo cents up tho moro one
paid tho better it would be of course; for
him. Twenty Btuds wore soon cut aud
the same speech made. Then I made tho
crowd hold up the diamonds, and each
man got fifty cents back who had bought.
" The thing began to get vory interest
ing, aud the crowd numbered three or
four hundred. Then 1 got out sorao beau
tiful gold-plated slecvo buttons, which I
explained could not bo bought for less
than $12. These I proposed to sell for
fifty cents each, giving to all who bought
$1 additional as before, each timo doubling
tho money gift. The buttons soon went
off, as did the other things, and I was
ready for the final 'bite' at the crowd.
Tho twenty pair of slecvo buttons had
been sold for half a dollar, and I had given
back twenty silver dollars. luat iel
low's a darned fool,' I beard all around
mo, but I replied to this by saying that
last week in Macon, I had given away
$1,500, and that I was ready to do it
again.
" Tho crowd was perfectly crazy to see
what came next. It was watch chains.
The chains I was to sell at any prico from
$2.50 to anything abovo that ono wanted
to give, I tell them tho while that the more
they paid the better it would bo for them.
I hinted that the watches would come
next, and this let them off like a lot of
madmen. The trick now was to sell as
many chains as possible at $2.50. I bad a
devil of a lot of chains, and so I sent them,
outright and left. The dollars came rush
ing blindly at me, and I raked them iu
like chaff. Then I got out of chains.
"Previously I had prepared two big,
red silk handkerchiefs, exactly aliko, and
as soon as the chains were all sold I took
the money, and, in tho presence of the
crowd, tied it all up together, aud, after
making a speech, proposed to throw the
bundle to the crowd for the best man to
take. While talking I purposely dropped
the bundle into my little box by my side.
in which I had tho other handkerchief. In
r"118 ?e 10. in 8UTeF me .paper
to make it stand out and look like the one
I had dropped. All this bad been arranged
beforehand, of course. With a whoop I
swung tho bag around xny bead after
stopping to pick it up where I first drop
ped it, and up it went into tho air. Great
heavens ! you 6houId have seen the mob !
I never saw anything like it. They fought
like tigers over the handkerchief, while I
took occasion to leave the spot. I bad
also arranged to brine the thing to a cli
max about tho timo the Albany train left,
so I was driven at once to the depot. I
was jtifct $280 ahead. But I got very weak
iu the knees while waiting at the depot.
I was a little too soon, and about a dozen
young men ran up, raising the very mis
chief of a noise, whioh I thought was for
me, anil it proved to bo true. They saw
me, and came aronnd me laughing and
knocking each other like crazy men. I
didn't know what on earth was the matter
until they finally told me it was the best
joke that had ever been played ou Bruns
wick, and, although thoy had been victimi
zed, they wanted to assure me it was all
nsht.
" I had sold the chains to nearly all the
best men in Brunswick, some of them pay
ing mo as high as 85 for them. I was
satisfied to leave, and had ray revenge.
You may put it down for a fact that any
average American crowd can be humbug
ged the same way every day in the year."
