Sbe Clever Trick by Wblch They Secared Valuable Oems. London Standard. The case of two clever English rogues, Fulton and Watson, came on for hearing yesterday. It was they who, last winter, stole from a jeweler, Mme. Chauvet, iu thoRuodes Capucines, diamonds to the value of 236,000 francs. The robbery was perpetrated in the following daring fash ion : A man calling himself Col. Gaston presented himself in Mme Chauvet's shop, and requested to be shown eome diadems, diamonds, necklaces, &c. His manners were so good and his dress so elegantly correct in every respect that the merchande had uo hesitation is spreading before her customer hor most valuable gems. Of these tho swindler made a lavish choice, and asked Mme Chanvete to place them in a black hand-bag be had brought on pur pose. Inpayment the pretended colonel offered a check on a foreign bank, which was refused. " Wait a moment," cried the blackleg, "I will get it changed at tho bank and bring you notes. Keep the liana bag ; I shall bo back directly." So say ing ho disappeaied. Almost immediately bo bad left the shop a respectably dressed woman entered and requested to be shown a certain ring in the shop window. While Hrao. Chauvet was occupied in getting the ring tho "colonel's " accomplice suc ceeded in adroitly substituting an abso lutely similar handbag for the 'one left on t ho counter. This done, she quickly chose lier ring and left. When evening came without her customer returning, Mme. ;hauv j.oaud thu bag which she thotw'i was the same ono that " the COllt'K'l ' li.ul loft and discovered that : i robbed. When Fulton and wore arrested ia Btl'iuai for F!l ; In 1 Wat..i Cthdf (haniond robberies, several of the etoncs .stolen from Mme. Chauvet were found in their possession. Fulton was yesterday sentenced to four, Watson, the jircteuded colonel, to live years imprison ment. TUE GREAT COMET. ?be Khmenu or Its Droit Computed at Boston. An approximate computation of tho clo incuts of tbo new coment, completed by 2lr. S. C. Chandler, jr., at Harvard obser vatoiy, based upon the observation of 3'rofessor Swift, of Cincinnati, on tholSth i:ist, at 1:30 p. m. on tho 19th instant, :it Cambridge, and that at 11 o'clock a. n., on the 20th instant, also at Cam ))iidge is as follows: Time of perihelion jas.s.is;e 1382, August 30 ; longitude of crihclion 271, longitude of node ITS-', inclination of orbit 17, perihelion dis lanco 27,000,000 miles. At tho time of the first observation the comet was about :iC,000,000 miles from tho earth, and at the time of the three observations 32,500,000 suites. This corresponds to a rate of i-pscil of 1,500,000 miles a day. Assuming tuoabm to bo correct, tho comet will npproash within 15,000,000 miles of the arth, bjing nearest in tho early part of October, but will then bo visible only in the Southern Hemisphere, and will proba lly bo visiblo above the horizon for a few days hero a little before sunrise. m MEW RAILROADS.
