LAXCATEB DAILY INTELL1GENCEK, MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 1882. SLancasiet fntclltgencct. MONDAY EVEKINO. SEPT. 18.' 1882. advm;k to would-be journalists. Some rblloaopblcObucrvatloB by n-YouDg Mas Who Has Bmu Tbere Himself. Middlctown Transcript. Four hundred dollars per year is said to be the average salary paid to the editors, reporters and printers of the United States engaged on newspaper work. Young men, you who are longing to join the band of public opinion moulders, just think of that. Four hundred dollars a year for the best si ice of your life ! lladn' t you better btick to the farm, the counting room, or learn a gooa traue, tuat, wnen you oecoiue tolerably proficient in it, will pay you re muncrative wages. Hundreds have learned that " moulding public opinion " is a mighty poor business. Moulding stove lids pays much better, and don't cause half the wear and tear on the mould er's system. A good many think that newspaper work is just as easy as falling down on ice.'or finding a girl's lips in the dark. We used to think so ourself, but that was when we were a bigger fool than we are now. Wo knew a young man oucc, out West, who for two years longed for a place on a newspaper as reporter, aud at last he got it. The first day ho was required to report a horse race, a temper ance meeting, aud a fire seven miles out of town. After he had dono all of this the managing editor told him he might write a Washington letter, giving a sum mary of the political situation at the national capital, and then he could go out and get sonio points on the pork market for the next day's paper. He wanted to know of tlio managing editor how in tbo dread future ho could writo a Washington letter at a point 714 miles from the national capital, aud when ho bad never been there in his life. Tho man aging editor cooly replied that " if he couldn't write a letter from any poiut in tho knowu woilJ ou fifteen minute's no tice ho'd hotter quit the newspaper busi ness before he disgraced it." He resigned that same evcuing aud went back to his counting house stool, and his old time in Hnnnnifont tan dollar a week air. aud never asked to be a journalist again. Some men seem to bo born to do news paper work, and they will do it if they have to live on cold hash aud button their coat up to their chin whilo their only shirt is in tho wash. And they will bo just as happy, too, as tho sou-in-law of a monop list with a bad cough. They would never be contented in any other calling, even if it paid them ten thousand dollars a year and firewood. All others should keep out of the journalistic field. rHKsUMKN, TAKE NOTICE.
