The Two Hundredth Anniversary of the
Founding or tbe City An Klaborate
Programme or restlvltles.
Tho celebration of the bi-contennial, or
two hundredth anniversary or tbe found
ing of Philadelphia, which takes place in
that city next month, beginning Tuesday
the 24th, gives every promise of being an
appropriate commemoration of that histor
ical event. Colonists were sent out by
William Penn as early as August, 1G81 for
the purpose of laying out the city, but the
actual work attending this undertaking
was not performed until the autumn of
the following year. The site of the city,
which now teems with a population bor
dering on a million, was chosen by Penn
himself, and the remark attributed to him
concerning its situation, "Of all the place
in the world, I remember not one better
Boated" isovidenceof the far seeing wis
dom of the founder of tho commonwealth.
The programme of tho forthcoming cel
ebration will be as follows :
FIRST DAT, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 24.
Parade of civic bodies, including thirty
fire comnanies from the state, tho old
firemen of Philadelphia, tho paid fire
denartmcut who will entertain tho vis
itors ; tho United States departments, the
postoflice, showing tho rise and progress
of the postal service. The United States
mint will display the process of coining,
striking off a commemorative medal ; the
city and state departments, the secret and
benevolent societies, temperance organiza
tions, tho butchers in magnificent cos
tume. Tho Marino band of Washington
vilihc at tho head of tho United States
(lup.utineni. Grciud tableaux ol the laud
ing of Penu at Dock street wharf, uayal
display on tho Delaware, ending with
inagiiiliwnl display of iiicworks in tho
park, with pieces illustrating tho early
history of Philadelphia. At least 23,000
men will bo in tho procession.
SECOND DAT, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25.
Parade of tho different trades, manu
factories, and foundries of Philadelphia,
with wagons, all showing tho various
modes of manufacture ; woodware, hard
ware, furniture, printing, dyeing, weav
ing, sewing machines, engine building,
tinware, household goods, upholstoring.
Grand parado of the Pennsylvania railroad
showing tho rise and progress of railroad
ing and car building with 30,000 mechanics
and manufacturers in line. In tho even
ing grand historical moving tableaux,
showing historical incidents in the history
of Pennsylvania, followed by au epic poem
illustrated by tableaux in floats or cars,
each car drawn by four horses, and shown
by lights arranged and carried by men.
THIRD DAT, TIIUKSDAT, OCTOBER 2G.
Musical entertainment. Allison's hall
(old machinery hall) engaged, lighted by
olectric lights and fitted up to accommo
date 15,000 persons ; 2,000 singers on tho
platform ; all the principal Welsh and
German singing societies and choirs ; $1,
250 in prizes ; reception to tho societies in
tho evening. Grand regatta on tho
Schuylkill by tho navy. Bicycle raco and
Caledonian games in tho park ; parado of
Knights Templars ; all tho loading com
mandcrics from tho principal cities ; five
to ten thousand knights, with their mag
nificent costumes and oriental drill on
parado; reception at tho Acadomy of
Music, horticultural and industrial hall in
tho evening.
FOURTH DAT, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27.
The greatest military display ever seen
in Pennsylvania ; 25,000 state and visiting
troops and Grand Army posts ; all tho Na
tional Guard of Pennsylvania and New
Jorsoy ; visiting corps from Boston, Prov
denco, Now York, Baltimore and other
points ; 10,000 raon of tho Grand Army ;
arrangements will bo mado to entertain all
visiting delegations of soldiers. In tho
evening tho city will bo entirely illumin
ated and receptions at tho Academy of
Music, Horticultural hall and other
places will bo held.
During tho four days the city will bo
magnificently decorated ; tho United
States will lend tho assistance of nil de
