Some carious developments are being made by the state mento takes before the district attorney, one of which is that among other thefts the roof was stolen from tho almshouse. The roof was of copper, and this fact being apparent to the board of guar dians it was determined to pat on a- new roof which it was said, would be less expensive and more durable. In making the change the old copper was collected together by order of the board and sold, the sum received lor it, it is said, being nearly $7,000, although there is bo record in the receipts at the control ler's office to that effect, and nose bat Major Phipps can tell among whom the money was divided. One of the workmen who was gathering the copper together thought he was entitled to his sharo aud disposed of ono of the largest pieces for $40. The manufacturing department of the almshouse has for years been under the charge of John B. Snyder, who w.ts very cloee to Phipps. His testimony before the district attorney occupied an entire day of this week, and the elites which it fur nished are now being worked out. Snyder told the district attorney his impression of material which was intended for the alms- bouse being hauled to other establishmeut outside material such as lead, etc. The appropriation to the manufacturing department annually expended was about 81G,0009whiIe the actual amount expended each year for several years past has been but about $9,000, the conspirators thns ob taining $7000 annually from ouo depart mout. W. F. Curry a milk dealer was arrested this morning at the instance of the dis trict attorney on the charge of conspiracy and fraud in charging tbo city for milk which was never delivered at the alms house, lie was held in $2,000 bail to answer. Similar arrests of fraudulent contractors are to be made later on. NO VEKOIOT YET. The Jury lu the Star Koute Trial Still Oat. Washington, Sept. 9. Shortly after 10 o'clock this morning the jury in tho Star Route cases camo into court and reported that they had been unable to agree upon a verdict and asked for farther instruc tions. These were given by Judge Wylie at considerable length, and their general tendency was strongly against tho defendants. At their own request tho jurors wero allowed to take their notes into their room and they again retired. They will report at " o'clock this afternoon, to which hour tbo court took a recess. Tho general impres sion seems to bo that a verdict will be re turned at tbat hour. "Washington, Sept. 9.
