s LANCASTER DAILY INTEL.LIGENCEK; TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 1882. THE TOBACCO OUTLOOK. 1AI PKHVEMESI IN THr. CUO WIND CKOf Tb "1 Crop Melsg Sampled and MbowiBg Up Finely New York and riilladel- pbla Muricett. During tbo past week the weather has been very favorable for the growing crops, ami much of the lato will make very fair leaf, but the tery late probably will not be able to "catch on" this season. Some Lancaster county fatmers who planted early are now dissatisfled, because of too much rain; they say it does not give them timo to cut. and much of the crop is very ripo, suffering to be oft. A very considerable part of the crop has already been cut off, and farmers say they never handled a crop that is so tender ; it breaks up very easily ; they want good sunshine for at least a week before cutting. The sportive Ilea is to be seen in abund ance in some localities and is getting his work in ; we have sccu home leaves that were literally riddled. Some farmers com plain of damage by shed burn in their tobacco now hanging in hbeds. We saw samples of a packing of " 81 " a few days since ; they looked very line and there is no doubt that " 81" is one of the finest crops ever produced in this county, if those samples are a sample of the wbolo crop. There was considerable business done in "80" last week at fair ligurcs, taken upon the whole the prospects for old tobac co is favorable to holders. For further accounts of tho growing crops see proceedings of the Agricultural society published in another column. Tbe Mew York Market. N. Y. Tobacco J oa ru ul. Sampling has been gone on vigorously during the paht week. The result is that every packer of new tobacco favors you willi the information, whether you ask for it or not, that his tobacco turns out " im mense ;" that the colors are something be yond imagination, and that the quality and yield are marvelous, Wo confess that tho now samples wo have sccu weio really line ones. If there are bad ones, they must bo at tho bottom of tho sample cases or at some seaside resort. They'll prob ably show up when the weather gets cooler. Any estimate ol the values of tho different '81 crops would therefore be prematura at this writing. Tho sales of now tobacco arc, on the whole, restricted to Wi.scoiiMii and Con necticut seconds. A small parcel of Con necticut wrappers at 5J0 cents, and about 150 eases of Ohio must bo classed as sam ple purchases. It cannot be denied that so far '81 Wisconsin has been the favorite, no open sales of Pennsylvania having been made. Tho high prico demanded for the latter (25 to 30 cents) aro iu a measure tho cause Oilers at IS, 20 and 215 ecuts aro reported. In old tobaccos a noticeable improve ment took place, aud prices aro once more ascending from tho " bargain" level. Old Pennsylvania was looked after more fie qucntly this week than for mouths past, and sales at as high as IS cents for run ning aud 23 cents for running wrappers have been made. Stiiel selections now bring from 35 to 40 cents. Iu couscquouee of this revival holders ouco more exhibit ligurativoly speaking, exceedingly still' upper lips. Tho sales of this week wcio us follows : Crop 'so. Pennsylvania 050 cases, 12 to 18 cents; tillers, 0 cunts. Connecticut 200 cases wrapjwrs, 23 to 35 coats. Ohio 100 ciscs wrappers, t) to lOi cents. Now Yoik 100 cases (Flats) p. t. Wisconsin 509 ci'se.'s Havana sued, t7, 2J, 21 cents. Crop '81. Connecticut 300 cases, mostly seconds, 12 cents ; wrappers, 30 cents. Ohio 100 mibcH wrapper?, p. t. Pennsylvania There is a rumor of sales of 400 cases as wo go to press. Nothing delinito is obta uablc regarding the same. Sumatra Market continues very active. Sales 400 bales. Prices : Small size, 85 to S)5 cents ; lar;e size, but light, SI to 61 05; modium size, dark, $1.10 to $1.20. Havana Market active S00 bales. Prico unchanged. Gaiis' fteport. Sales of seed leaf tobacco repotted by J. S. Cans' Son & Co., tobacco brokers, No. 131 Water .street, Now York, for the week ending September, 4 1882 : 420 cases 18S1 Wisconsin Havana seed lC18lc; 500 cases 1881 New England, seconds, ll(Vi;l'. wrappers, 18(30c ; 400 cases 1880 Pennsylvania p. t., 5500 cases 1880 do. C18c. ; 190 cases 1880 stato i. t.; 100 cases 1881 Ohio wrapper?, 812ic. : 200 1880 Ohio, 412c, total, 2,110 cases. Philadelphia Marltet. Sales of seed leaf tho past week show a decided increase, and what is very cucouta- giug, manufacturers aro on tho market looking and examining, and appear to be perfectly williug to buy if the kind of goods is offered which suits their purpose. Manufacturers say Sumatra is not what they want ; it has a lino appearance, but no color or quality. Wisconsin and York stato Havana seed, 1881 crop, is coming to the front , iu wrappers it has A No. 1 quality. Prices hold very linn at present, with prospect favorablo for holders.
