From the SL James Gazette. Little girls fear tho piano, and long for tbe time when, having at last mastered its difficulties, they will uot be called upon to play upon it any more , while numberless great girls regard it as one of tho maiiy nuisances which lliey must put up with until tbey get married, Ouco, however, liberate young women from that piano to which like serfs they have so ou boon "assigned" but not "attached" aud some of them will take to cultivating it for its own sake ; while the remainder will at least spare, both' themselves aud their friends a considerable amount of anuoy anee. The enormous difficulty of modern pianoforte music constitutes in itself a reason why in the education of young girls the piauo should not like " danciug aud deportment," be made obligatory. A woman can get through life so well without playing the piauo ; aud for a few shillings, or even in extreme cases for a single shilling, she can, if her lot Imp pens to bo cast iu Loudon, hire from time to time tho finest players that this great piauforte-playing ago has ever produced. It is uot because the piano is unworthy of her atteutiou that womau should be liberated from tho task work imposed upon her in connection with it. It is because music, like every other art, demands from its votatits (special gifts and inclinations, and because among womeu who are thus endowed it is a mistake to supposo that the piano is tiio only iDBtiument suitable to them. Lot it be understood iu tho lirst placo that it is no more a disgrace for a young lady not to play the piano than it is a disgrace for her not to draw, to paint, or to model ; and iu tho second place, that if site does mean to play some instrument it is a mistake for her to icstrict herself as a matter oi course to the piauo. Next to the organ, the piano is, thanks to tho orchestral eil'ects which it cau bo made to produce, the iincst instrument iu tho world ; and it is the only instrument for which every great composer writes, as a matter of course, and for which every great composer's or- cbesttal works are arranged in reduced form. To praise at the expense of the piano, tbe violio, which except when tours deforce are indulged iu, yields like the human voice but a sigle note, is a vor y common tbing, but it is one that we should not ourselves care to undertake. The violin i? bo effective in a true musical sense must, iiJl.g the human voice, be ac companied cither by the orchestra or by the pianoforte, or by other members of tho violin family. Tho pianoforto is ( putting aside, of course, the too colossal organ ) tho only instrument which for harmonic as well as melodic purposes, is complete iu itself and which is really an orchestra in little. There' are gopd reason, then, why all who care much for music should study tho piauo but no reason why they should study the piano exclusively. Often in the same family there are two, thiee, and even four pianists. How much and ad vantageously the musical domain of fcuch a family would ba " increased if, with' or without neglect of tho piano, the instru ments of the violin family were taken up with a view not necessarily to string quarters, but, at least, to the numerous pieces written by great composers -for violin or violoncello, and piano. "The violin I include always the viola and violoncello is no doubt," sajs Mr. Hullah in his excellent little work on " Musiu in the llouso,"1 a difficult iustrument ; but tho difficulty of acquiring a serviceable amount of skill on it has been much exaggerated. To become a Joachim, a Holmes, or a Patt;, is the work of a life time, even for men gift ed with equal aptitude and perseverance to these turned to account under skillful guidance and at the right time of life aud supplemented and encouraged by a thous and circumstances as impossible to take account of as to bring about and foresee. But there is an amount of skill below very much below that of attists of this class which, if accompanied by feeling, taste and intelligence, may contri bute largely to the variety and the agrecableness of music in "'the houfce." It may be hoped that in a fewyeais, without the number of our; do mestic pianists becoming too much dinYm ished, that of our domestic violinists will be considerably increased. Homo half dozen lady violinists have appeared this season in London, at public concert, who possess the very highest merit ; aud at a half-pri vat?, half-public conceit givei- re cently at Stiflbrd Homo for tho benefit ( f a charity, the chief attraction was a string band consisting of no fewer than twenty four lady executants. The diversion, then, of feminine talent from the piano to the violin, is not a movement which has to be originated ; it needs ouly to bo encouraged.
