mour. It is completely filled up, causing
a pool of stagnant water, and in case of a
heavy rain the water would be thrown on
the turnpike, washing it into gullies.

At Columbia, yesterday, ex-Sheriff
Strinc caught with book and line a black
bass that weighed 4 pounds and 2 ounces.
It is now to bo seen alive at 8. E. Balls,
corner North Queen and Walnut streets.
It is one of seventeen that Mr. Strine
caught yesterday.

Amusement.
The Coming Circus. On Tuesday next the
great Van Amburg circus and menagerie will
exhibit in this city. This show is one or the
oldest In the world and always draws large
crowds. The following notice is from the
Unionist Gazette, ot Somervlile, N. J .: "On the
15th the above-named show visited Somervlile.
The performance was a good one, considering
the condition of the ling, and, barring the
mire, the audience generally was pleased.
The New Brunswick Frcdonian says : Van
Amburg, Frost & StoneV circus gave two ex
hibitions at the City Park, which were wit
nessed by thousands of people. The ring per
formance was indeed ot tho best and the tra
peze artists were from the best school.
Tumbling, horizontal bar, carpet nets and
feats of strength were substituted for a large
share ot horse business, which has grown tire
some to the veteran visitor to tho arena."

Panama, Aug. 17. The revising boards
'have Just completed their meeting. In
Colon on the night of the 15th
the leaders of the defeated pSrty headed
by a, man named Preston, of political
and murderous notoriety, commenced in
discriminate revolver firing in the streets.
The police endeavored to check them but
without meeting with the least success.
In the assault two innocent canoemen
were shot. There were 100 national troops
in the city at the time, bat they could not
turn out until matters assumed a more
alarming stage. Fearing the consequences
Preston and his gang took to the woods,
and although parties have been sent in
search of them they have remained up to
the present entirely unmolested. He is
said to have one hundred armed men with
him, so that the probabilities are he will
give the authorities some trouble, and that
finally a compromise will be effected, under
which he will gain some of the political
advantages he seeks. The principal ob
jects of the movement is to keep -Dr.
Nunez from entering into power as presi
dent, to which office be was elected months
ago.
AVENGING A TERRIBLE CRIME.
A Negro Hung to a Tree by an Infuriated
Mob.
Montgomery, Ala., Aug., 26. The
negro man, Leonard Coker, who commit
ted tbe outrage on a woman named Cath
rine Haynesand then murdered her last
Monday about 30 miles east of this place,
on the Western railroad was captured
yesterday afternoon. He confessed the
crime as the evidence of his guit was over
whelming. Portions of his clothing be
ing found near the scene of the outrage,
and he having teen seen with her several
times on the day of the killing. A crowd
of whites and blacks were engaged in the
search for him, and when he was captured
he was carried to the spot where he mur
dered his victim, and hung to a troo until
he was dead.
SUMMER HOTEL BURNED.
What Excited the People at Newport

Newport,R.L, Aug. 26-The Cliff House,
owned and managed by William T. Hall,
as a summer hotel, was burned this morn
ing and two adjoining cottages were badly
damaged. A rumor that several lives
were lost prove? unfounded. Many of tho
guests were in bed bat were aroused in
season, and saved tbe greater portion of
their effects. Considerable iurciture and
bedding was also saved. The fire origi
nated in the cook bouse and spread rapid
ly. The engines, owing to the long dis
tance from the city, did not arrive in sea
son to do much good. Tho owners of the
other hotels aud adjacent cottages offered
all possible assistance to the unfortunate
guests.
FIRE IN PHILADELPHIA.
A destructive Blaze Far Up Town.
Philadelphia, Aug. 26. A fire broke
out early this morning in the boiler room
of tho building at the northeast corner of
Vienna street and Girard avenue, causing
a loss of $18,000. On the planing mill of
M.S.Duy, on the first floor loss was $4,500;
box factory of It. S. Officer, second floor,
$1,000 ; trunk factory of Goldberg & Bro.
$3,000, and tho bath tab manufactory of
R. B. Swain & Co., $5,000. Tbe two lat
ter were on the third floor. Tho marble
works of Philip McCart adjoining was
damaged to the extent of $1,800. The
building was owned by George W. Middle
ton and was damaged to tho extent of
$3,000. Most of the losses are insured.

AN INSANE WIFE'S HORRIBLE DEED.
Cutting Her Sleeping Husband's Throat
From Kh.' to Ear.
WoRTiiiNGTON, Ind., Aug. 26. Wm.
Chapman, an elderly gentleman, was mur
dered here last evening by his insane wife.
Preparation had been made to send her to
an asylum, aud her husband h'ad been
watchinir her for several days. It is sup
posed that be was so fatigued he fell asleep
when sho cut his throat from ear to ear
with a razor. Her two daughters, hear
ing tho noise, hurried to the room, but
found the door locked and their lives were
threatened if they broke in. They called
assistance and the murderess was secured.
A DISASTROUS OVERFLOW.
A Woman Drowned and Mucb Destruction
of Property Caused.
Galveston, Tex., Aug. 26. A special
dispatch to tho Neics states that a heavy
ram or water spout caused tne ueaa ot
Bosque creek above Sfephenville, on the
24th inst, to overflow, destroying proper
ty estimated to bo worth from $40,000 to
$100,000. A Mrs. Hart was drowned, her
house being dashed to pieces. Other per
sons were saved by climbing on tbe roofs
of their houses and adjoining trees. The
water has now subsided.
Deatb ot a Shipbuilder.
New London, Conn. Aug. 26. C. A.
Mallony, a well known shipbuilder, died
at his residence in Mystic, Conn., this
morning.
The deceased was found dead in bed this
morniug. He was 87 years of age. Mr.
Mallory was formerly one of the largest
shipbuilders and shipowners in southeast
ern Connecticut. His estate is estimated
at nearly a million dollars. His wife died
under similar circumstances a year ago.
Money Lost on Courtney.
Auburn, N. Y., Aug. 26 The Advertis
er will say to day that Courtney told his
friends he was going to win at Saratoga
and they backed him heavily in the pool
box. The Union Springs people are said
to have lost thousands of dollars,one ycung
man's losses reaching $3,000. All the
sporting men here pronounce the race a
piece of outrageous jobbery.
A Preacher Stabbed in a Quarrel.
Smxon, O., Aug. 26. In a quarrel yes
terday over an attempt to inforce the law
prohibiting the sales of liquors on Sunday,
Rev W. L. Philips, pastor of the Metho
dist Episcopal church, was stabbed seri
ously by John E. Smith, a leading grain
dealer.

and William E. Harding for "Tug"
Wilson to-day signed an agreement and

C. Gray, who was poisoned a short time
ago by a negro girl named Mary Booth,
who has been sentenced to be hung next
November. The death of his wife is sup
posed to have caused tbe rasa act.
Tbe Bonds Going Fast.
Washington, Aug. 26. Tbe amount of
the offers tor tbe new three per cent,
bonds, represented by the packages mark
ed " 10 a. m., Aug. 1st, 1882," all of
which were included in the drawing for
choice of numbers yesterday, is about
$200,000,000, the largest since application
so far received is from tbe Philadelphia
National bank. It is for about 2200,000
of tho new bonds.

How a Party Carried On In New York.
Six drunken roughs entered Peter
Stein's saloon, New York, yesterday fore
noon, and because he refused to give them
drinks their leader shot him down with a
revolver. The party then fled and
tho assassin, still flourishing the
pistol, sprang upon the front plat
form of a car, shoved his pistol in tbe
face of the astonished driver, and seizing
the reins, ordered him to stand back. The
driver was taken by surpriso and cowed
into submission. Whipping up tho horses,
tho ruffian ran them at a dead gallop to the
corner of Houston street, the while cover
ing the passengers in the car with his re
volverandthreateniagtoshootthefirstwho
stirred. At Houston street he sprang from
the car, and boarding a ferry boat that
was just going oat, he quitted the city for
Brooklyn. The leader, Nixon, was dur
ing the afternoon, arrested in Williams
burg. He will be brought to New York
to-day. James Stanley an3 George Smith,
of the gang, wore arested after a desperato
resistance at Rivington and Goerck
streets. Smith shot at an officer and
missed him.

Ex-Governor Sprague refuses to give up
the Canonchet (R. I.) estate to Frank D.
Moulton, its purchaser, and has placed
men, armed with rifles, &c, at all the en
trances to the property, in the house, and
on its roof. Trustee Chaffee, who went
thero with his lawyer to give Moulton
pDSsession, "decided to withdraw and
give the state of Rhodo Island a chanco to
