Recounting How he Took Possession of tne Dain Between Mnglar and Mahuta The British Occupying Maxania. General Sir Garnet Wolseley recounts an engagement at Magfar on Thursday, iu which he held his ground the whole day against ten thousand Egyptians. His forces numbered about two thousand men. In his details Gen. Wolrcley says : "I ad vanced this morning be: ii.c daybreak, with the Household cavalry, two horse artillery guns, thirty mounted infantry, one thous and men from the Yor'c and Lancaster regiment and the mannrs After some skirmishing I took possession of the dam which the enemy bad constructed across the canal between the villages of Magfar and Mahuta. During the operations two Equadrons of the Household cavalry charged the enemy's broken infantry very gallantly. I soon found that tho enemy were being largely reinforced from Tcl-el-Kebir. I could cc trains arriving. I thought it inconsistent witii traditions for tho queen's army to retire before any number of Eiryptiau troops, and so de cided to hold the ground until reinforce ments arrived. All day long I have had au Egyptian force of ten thousand men, with ten guus, ou my front and on my right Hank. The precision of the enemy's artillery was very good, but fortunately they fired common shell nearly all day, and when they did fire shrapnel their fuses were badly adjusted. Tho enemy had their cavalry regiments in line. Our horses, having been recently on board ship, wcro not in condition to gallop much. Tho two-hone artillery guns were served with pluck aud ability. Our casu alties have becu slight, Captain Uallam Parr was wounded through tho leg. Lord Melguud received a wound through the hand. Captain Parr's mounted infantry distinguished itself. All the troops en gaged did well. To-morrow (Friday) I shall attack tho enemy's position at Holcuki and hope to take possession of the dam which they constructed there this morning." ASS2USSING THIS WUMUn. Ulialrmaii Cooper sends lliit Circular to the Female Clems from Peun.-ylvania. The taxation has begun of female cm ployecs iu the departments who claim Pennsylvania as their legal residence. Several cases were reported where circulars were received from Chairman Cooper ic qucsting the sinews of war to enable tho "grand old Republican party to wage a successful contest against its Democratic adversary." Ono caso iu particular do serves special mention. An elderly lady, who receives a salary of nine hundred dollars, out ot which she supports herself and two others, received ono of these cir culars. Sho stated thai already she had been assessed eighteen dollars by the national committee aud had paid it, although sho could illy afford to do so. Now camo the demand from Cooper, aud sho was iu a quan dary, as she feared that a refusal might icsult iu the loss of licr position. Shu was advised to pay no attention to tho letter of tho btato committee, and, if neccsMiry, to lay her case before the .secretary of her dcpaitmeut. So uigeut has become tho demand for funds by the national commit tee that the departments aro again being carefully looked over, and such as lcfufe to put up tho amount assessed against them arc placed on a sheet, headed ' not paid." Ono argument used to persuade backwaid contributors is that thcio arc hosts of applicants who will gladly take their place and esteem it a privilege to be assessed for the good of the cause. The circular sent to tho Pennsylvania employees is dated at tho " Headquarters Pen usylvatiia state committee, St. Cloud Hotel." and is headed by tho n.ituj of Cooper aud his secretaries. It leads as follows : ' To Misj : The Republican .state comniittco desires to mako complete pre pations for what mut prove a great bat tlo with the Democratic party. It must prepare, pi hit and circulate suitable doc uments touching the issue iuvolvcd aud to do all things for success which may be legitimately done. Tho struggle involves nut only the administrative aud legi-sla-i live control of the state, but that repre sentation in Congress which will determine its political standing. Iu such a battle we bolievo that you will esteem it both a privilege aud a plcasuio to make to its funds a contribution which, it is hoped, may not be less that $18. The committee is authorized to state that such voluntary contiibution from persons employed in the scrvico of the state or of the United States will not be objected to in any offi cial quarter. Please mako prompt; and favorablo respoDseby bank check or draft, or postal luonoy order, payable to the or der of the chairman of the Republican state committee. Diicct as indicated in tho heading of this letter. Thomas V. Coopbu, Chair mau." hciixattkhly anu iatto.n. fercoiid Failure to Nominate a Democratic Senatorial Candidate 111 the Fortieth. The Dcmociatic ccufciccs oftliu For tieth senatorial district held their second conference at Brownsville, Pa. Fifteen ballots had been takcu at a pievious con ference, at Rice's Landing, and fourteen more wcro taken, without lcfcult. The Greeno county people off.ued a resolution providing that the dispute should be thrown back to tho two county committees which should appoint sub-committees of five. The Fo.yetlts people objected to shifting tho responsibility, aud said Sena tor Schnatterly would appear before the Fayette committee to ask instructions. Patton claimed that the people of Fayetto were not for Schnatterly, aud the latter said if his county' committee said so he would telegraph the nomination to Patton. The Greeno confeiccs objected to this, and about C o'clock unceremoniously with drew from the conference. Mr. Schnatterly himself renewed the proposition of his conferees to Mes'sis. Hays and Ingram, not knowing they had left the conference. Schnatterly and Secretary Mahon will at tend theFayctte committee meeting and ask for instructions. The senator says he will make his fight with Dr. Patton before the people, unless tho county committee de crees othotwiso, but that in no event should the district be endangered. If tho Republicans nominate a candidate ho will withdraw and give Patton a clear field, because he cannot afford to havo the dis trict go to the Republicans. He says ho has served formal notice to this effect on the Republican managers in his county. Ho does not know what tho committco will do, but he will report tho facts to them for consideration. A CLKUK ANU A COWHIDE. Ylfforously Applying the Laiti to Avengo an Insult to His WHc. The spectacle of an able-bodied man vigorously applying a cowhide to the shoulders of 'another stalwart individual created a lively sensation in front of the postoffico department in Washington. The parties were both government clerks, named Johnson and Kennedy respectively. Tho former is a crack shot with the rifle and for the past two or three weeks has been at Creedmoor practising lor a posi tion iu the rifle team which will shoot against the j)icked riflemen of England. During -his absence at the rifle range his wife has been subject to annoying atten tions from Kennedy. He met with no en couragement, however, from tho lady, who waited till her husband came home, when he was promptly made acquainted with what had transpired while he was away. He discarded the rifle for the raw hide and stationed himself near Kennedy's office to await bis opportunity. As soon as he camo within reach Johnson bela bored the rascal until ho sought safety in flight ; vowing that his time would come for vengeance. All tho parties are well known and the affair has created a lively ripple. XHIS '1K1-STATJ2 1'ICNIC. Ki:l or the Keal ItuslneKn or the Kxhlbltlon. senator Stewart 1'resenU Notwithstanding tho immense number of people and vehicles ou tho grounds of tho tri-state picnic Thursday, all were re turned to their homes iu safety. Friday brought some ten thousaud spectators to replace the crowd. Seuator John Stewart, the candidate of the Independent Repub licans, came to the grove fresh from the very complimentary reception accorded him by the Independents of Mechanics burg, and, though unheralded by a formal reception, was during his stay constantly surrounded by friends. Reing called upon by tho crowd for a speech, be announced that he was not present on any political mission and perhaps was not so well pre pared to discuss agriculture as many of his auditors, yet his acquaintance with farmers convinced him that their patriot ism invariably placed their influence on tbo side of tho right in all great con tests. Frederick Watts, late commis sioner of agriculture ; M. C. Her man, Professor Heiges, principal of the state normal school at Suippensburg ; Charles U. Mulhn, president of the Cum berland county agricultural society ; Presi dent Hubhousc, of the Washington coun ty, Md., agricultural society, and many other eminent gentlemen were on the grounds during tho day. Tho authorities of the national grange Patrons of Hus bandry held a meeting in tho new hall and formally received the building from Colo nel R. II. Thomas, chairman of tho execu tive committee, aud dedicated it to the uses of tho national grango aud subordi nate granges with tho usual impressive ceremonies. At a meeting of all the exhibitors held Friday afternoon resolutions declaring this the best placo to exhibit machinery and resolutions highly complimentary to Colonel Thomas and his assistants were unanimously adopted. A very large pro portion of tho exhibits are labeled as dis posed ot ou tho grounds. AVhrle the picnic continues over Saturday, tho real busiuess of the exhibition is coded. Tho whole a flair is pronouueed by all to have been tho grandest success of its kind. Tho efficiency of the management and of tbo police arrangements is shown by the fact that but a single unimportant arrest was necessary. 1UE GALLOWS. K.icr.uiioii ot it Tilan Who Wanted to AMst In Krectins tho Scaffold. Robcit Patker, who killed his wife by poisoning her with strychnine on tho 23d of last December, was executed at Aiken, S. C. The evidence leading to his convic tion was eutirely circumstantial but con clusive. He was ably defended iu the trial List June, but the jury after an ab sence of only a few minutes returned a verdict of guilty. Efforts were made to induce the governor to commute the sen tence, but without avail. Parker giew sullen iu his demeanor during his iiu prisonmcut and declined to talk about the crime. When tho work 01 constructing the trallows was begun he asked for per mission to assist iu its erection, which was, of comce, refused. His object, it was supposed, was to assault tho jailer aud if possible effect his escape. Ho slept woll the last night. Tho parting with his mothcrand other relatives just prior to tho execution was very affecting. He maintained Iris innocence to tho last. Ho was perfectly calm anil took his position under the uoomj, standing firmly. Tho drop fell at 1 :03 and iu thirteen minutes ho was pronounced dead. He died with out a struggle. Its cause is most frequently ascribed to local surroundings, and there is very little question, but this opinion is substantiated by facts. Malaria docs not necessarily mean chills and fever whilo thoso troubles usually ac company it. It often affects tbo suf ferer with general lassitude, accom panied by loss of appetite, sleepless ncss, a tired feeling and a high fever the person atfliotcd growing weaker and weaker, loses flesh day after day, until ho becomes a mere sfceMor, a shadow of his former self. Malaria once having laid its hold upon tho human frame, the door of the systen is thrown open to nervous diseases. The body weak and enfeebled absorbs no nourish ment, but subsisting upon Itself, the digestivo organs no lougcr per form their lunclons; tho liver be comes torpid, and other organs failing to do their routine work, speedily become disordered, and dissolution and death aro apt to ensue. In additiou to Itoing a certain curo for malaria and chills and fever, BROWN'S IRON BITTERS is highly recommended for all diseases requir ing a certain and efficient tonic ; es pecially indigestion, dyspepsia, inter mittent fevers, want of appetite, loss of strength, lack of energy, etc. Eu riches the blood, strengthens tbo mus clnp, and gives new life to the nerves.
