in good condition when the schools .open

A runaway team on the Chestnut Hill
turnpike, yesterday afternoon, was caught
at Wisler's latin before auy damage was
done to the buggy.
Mr. Alfred Myers, diugittt, is selling to
a thirsty public imported English ginger
ale. It is a delightful di ink and is not of
an intoxicating nature.
On account of a mistake on heating a
signal yestciday about 1:30 a. m., a shift
ing engine, No. 441 P. K. R. run into an
ore train and smashed two earn. No per
son was hurt.
The Hev. Mr. Long, from near Trenton,
N. J., preached in the Presbyterian church
- yesterday morning and evening. No ser
vices were held in the Methodist church
t yesterday, as it. is being repaired.
Mr. .Too Miller, the member of Company
C who had his hand bitten by a dug at
Lewistown, during tho encampment, aud
who was obliged to return home iu conse
quence, has reported for duty again on the
Pennsylvania railroad.

The " Gutter Snipes," a party of jovial
gentlemen of this placo, left this morning
tor their auuu-.il trip to Uehoboth, N..1.
The party numbers 24 persons. The fish,
aud and Iemonado must suiter now.
The Stove Work.
Mr. Dan Goweu commenced hauling to
the stove works this morniug another
kiln full of bricks. The buildings of these
works are going up fast. The Third street
gable end of the hu:e foundry has been
built to its full Leight.
A Stray bpark.
A tpark from a passing engiuo caused
the roof of Keek's stove store, adjoining
tho American house, on Front .street, to
take fire, yesterday at 8:15 a. in. The
Columbia fire company had tho first stream
o:t the building. The loss is slight.
Little Locals.
Osceola tribe of Red Men will picnic in
Heisc's woods next Thursday, and on
Wednesday St. John's Luthciait and
Trinity Reformed churches will hold a
union picnic at Bruekltart's on tho Read
ing & Columbia railroad.
Gov. Hoyt was so much pleased with
the marching of company C, at Lewis
town, thatheNaskcd tieu. llartranft, whose
company it was, and the latter's reply,
" Captain Case's, of Columbia," brought
a rosy blush of pridn to the boys' checks.
Mrs. Lew Lyle discovered a thief iu her
house yesterday and gave the alarm. The
rascal took to his heels, but was cap
tured. Lizzie Moffct aud Lizzie Culbert wero
arrested and lined $2.50 each by 'Squire
, Youug for claiming and carrying off a
' trunk containing glasses lull of jelly that
arrived from York Furnace ou a canal
boat Saturday afternoon.
Quite a large number of Lancastrians
came up tho Port road on Saturday even
ing, after a day's fishing along the river's
banks aud oil its islands. Among them
we noticed tho browned faces of Charles
Kauffman, esq., Charles Brown, James E.
Learcatt, Isiac Lcbold aud others. The
'strings of fish " were conspicuously absent.

This morning a thief entered tho house
of Mrs. Elizabeth Long, a widow, residing
at 332 West Orange stteet, by climbing up
tho grape arbor and lifting a shutter on a
j-econd story window from its hinges.
About !) o'oiock Mrs. Long's daughter,
Elizabeth, returned home from her work,
as she did not feel well. Up to that time
there had becu no one at homo miico an
ea. ly hour, and Mio noticed a shutter ly
ing on the lloor. She went up to her room
aud (bun 1 that it had been entered
by some one who lia-1 broken both oi her
bracelets and the crystal from her wateh.
These things hail been taken from a
bureau drawer. She passed into another
room aud found that a small trunk which
had contained about $100 in money had
been broken open. About $40 was gone
entirely, $20 was found concealed under
the carpet, and $40 in tho cupboard, where
tho thieves had put it. Nothing else is
missing, and there is no duo to tho
thieves.

Birthday rarty and Presentation.
Saturday was tho seventeenth birthday
of Wm. Drcppard, son of Wni. Dreppard,
cigar manufacturer, and he gave a supper
to his friends at his father's residence.
Duting the evening his parents presented
him with a beautiful Lancaster watch.
Driving Accident.
Two teams, one of which camo down
Chestnut street aud tho other down Duke,
over tho bridge, collided ut the corner of
these streets last night. One horse was
terribly .injured by having a shaft from
the other buggy run into his breast.

that so far as Arabi has disobeyed tho
Caliph be'.is a rebel, but in so far as bo had
defended a Mussulman country against
Christian aggressions bo has merely per
formed bis duty as a true follower of
Islam.
The operators made overtures to the
striking driver boys at the Hollenbush
mines, Wilkesbarro, today, but it is
thought no compromise will be effected
without yielding to the strikers' demands.

join in the strike did not succeed.

mony mills today bavo Inst ground. Tho
Ogden, Strong and No. 2 mills wsro un
able to start their wheels. In No. 1 mill
tho weavers were reduced to tbrco in
number, and at tho Mastodon mill
only two spinners reported. Iu the
latter a small gain in weavers ii
claimed. The strikers to-day received
from the Central Labor Union promises of
financial aid, and iu consequence are jubil
ant. Ostracism of the so called "tcaus"
is the strongest weapon of tho strikers,
and it is enforced to tho extreme. The
next movement on the part of tho mill
managers is awaited with interest. They
claim that consideration is oxhausted and
aggressive measures are consequently
looked for. Tho " stay-outs" are masters
of tlio situation to-day.

situation has assumed a new phaso on
account of tho rcpoi ted sale of tho work-
iogmen's organizations to one of tho old
political parties. It is alleged that tho
coming convention of workingmeu in
Philadelphia is to be packod with "sound
crs" and "feelers" who can outvote
the laboring men and carry out the plans
of the politicians. Mr. Jarrett is conse
quently preparing a circular, jesigncd to
prevent this bchomo and itm.ll la signed
by officials representing 40; 000 working
men in the Pittsburgh district.
