.V LANCASTER DAIL.Y INTELLIGENCER, SATURDAY, AUGUST 12, 188& THE IRISH JEXPEDITION. tiUCUEHS A IU 17K OF (MKEAT DOUBT. Cob vlaclax; Proof Ttfat Um Katarprlae W1U EacooaUr Appalllac PiMwHttM and FrohaMa DiMMMr. New York Times. The allies of Arabi Pacha are increasing in number. M. de Lessens was the first great pjwer to declare openly in faror of Kjrypt and undertake to trip up the Eng lish soldiers by throwing his dead body under their feet The Irishmen hare now followed M. de Lessep's example and are about to furnish Arabi with men and money wherewith to dluive the British divvies into the say, and so hasten the tapid dissolution of the British empire. The movement of the Irish in favor of Arabi is as yet confined to the Irishmen of America. They have, however, declared their intention with all the boldness and frankness characteristic of a secret Irish conspiracy. An Irish club, or circle, or Land League, or something of the kind in Philadelphia has resolved to present to Arabi the proceeds of an excursion to Cape Slay, and the Irishmen of New York, not to bo outdone in patriotism by their brethren of Philadelphia, are to send an Irish expedition to Egypt without de lay. It is thought that the money to bo give to Arabi by the Philadelphia club will amount to fully $7.50, and it is posi tively known that the expedition to be sent from New York will consist of three distinct Irishmen. It is probable that tbo idea of sending an Irish army to Egypt was suggested by the difficulty of finding any easy method of sending tho expected $7.50 to Arabi. It cannot be sent in a letter, for the reason that American bank bills are worthless iu El'vdL and the Cairene postoflice will not cash an American postal order. Similarly it is impracticable to send tho money iu the shape of a draft, for there are no for eigu bankers left in Egypt, and the native bankers will not pay out good gold for a mere slip of paper. Obviously, tho only way in which to get the $7.50 to Arabi is to scud it to him by a special messenger. Now, it occurred to the New York Irish men that the best kind of messenger that could be sent would be an Irish army, which could convoy the tteasure safely, and could bring to Arabi tho help of a bold and invincible foreign legion. Vc cordingly, the Irish army about to bo dis patched from this city as soon as transpor tation can be provided will doubtless take charge of the $7.50, aud it is to be hoped that this drain of gold will not seriously affect the financial prosperity of our coun try. It will be comparatively a simple affair to transport the three Irishmen to Egypt since they can easily go iu tho steerage of one steamer to Southampton and of an other to Alexandria. When, however, Ithey have arrived in the harbor of Alexau dria their difficulties- will begin. It is possible that if each Irishman lauds in small detachmcuts the ontiic Irish army may disembark without attracting atten tion, but surely it cannot pass through the British lines unchallenged. The British army will fall upon the three Irishmen, overpower them by numbers and thrust them into the first available dim-icon, where, in all probability, Min ister Lowell will let them lie bad cess to him while he banquets at the Tower of London with the queen and joins in the revels of Gladstone, Bright and other be sotted enemies of Erin. Meanwhile, tho $7.50 will be confiscated by the ruthless Saxons, and thus a new and terrible chap ter will bo added to the history of the wrongs of Ireland. Obviously, the Irish expeditionary force cannot afford to run any such risk. It must land on some part of thu coast of Egypt where there will bo no British sol diers to molest it, and must theu caiefully make its way to Arabi's headquarters. The three Irishmen may manage to land without detection, but surely the maich of so large and hungry a forca through tho delta cannot escape observation. The natives will lleo in terror before their wav ing shillalehs aud the British scouts will soon hear of their presence iu Egypt and will suspect their purpose, no matter if they, for prudential reasons, circulate the plausible report that they have couio to Egypt in order to vote tho Democratic ticket aud to earn an honest living as Cairene aldermen. Let as concede that tho Irish army sue ceedsin reaching Arabi's camp. What sort of a reception will it meet ? Of course, Arabi would assume that so large a foicc moving towards bis intrenchments intends to attack him, and ho will instantly open upon it with his guns. It will be in vain for the Irishmen to display a flag of truce, for Arabi has used that sort of a flag him self, and knows how worthless it is. Tho only thing for the Irishmen to do will be to surrender and permit themselves to be marched as prisonors into Arabi's lines, with tho intention of explaining them selves to the Egpptian commander as soou as they can obtain an interview with him. Long before the Irish army can bo brought into tho presence of Arabi its $7.50 will have to be looted by the sol diers. When tho soldiers inform Arabi that the prisoners aro Englishmen how will they manage to establish their real , character? They cannot speak Arabic and Arabi knows no other language. Tho more earnestly they try -to tell him that they are Irish patriots anxious to help him thrash the sanguinary Saxons, and regarding Arabi as a pathriot, a gintle man, and a scholar, begorra, the more the Egyptiau leader will imagine that they are mad Englishmen who need to be put to immediate death. They will be mas sacred within an hour after they reach Arabi's camp' and the $7.50 brought with them will be spent by Arabi's soldiers for tobacco, not a cent of it finding its way into the Egyptain treasury. If the Irish army could hire a dragoman to act asan interpreter it might succeed in convincing Arabi of its true intentions, but a dragoman must be a very expensive luxury iu Egypt Just at present, and tho entire exchequer of tho army would not suffice to pay his wages for a single day. The chance against the success of the Irish expedition aro simply enormous, and if it really attempts to go to Egypt, either it will find itself in a British duuguou or it will bo massacred by Arabi's impetuous troops. . i Haytsviixe, onio, Feb. 11, 1SS0.
