In an easy hammock resting, Under shady trees. With the clover's perfume filling Every southern breeze; With the world and all Its trouble. In the distance hazy, With a cousin's hand to swing yon, Wouldn't you be lazy? With a prize or tropic Cuba, Dark In Its complexion, Lighted for you by your cousin ' Not the least objection To your smoking rather like lt"- liang yourseir, old croaker! With that hammock, cigar, cousin, You would be a smoker ! With a rose bud pinned so neatly. Where your heart is beating. While your eyes bold hcr's a captive In a long, ecstatic meeting; With yourarm to draw her closer. No one near to know It, With her lips Just ripe lorktesing, 4'oti would be a poet ! Frowning In her deep displeasure, filled with mock severity, Flinging back yonr bold approaches, With a queen's austerity. Smiling all tbo whllo she scolds you. Love's light flooding o'er her, Kissing you because she scolded Wouldn't you adore her? M. OPKKAT1C KATING AMU DRINKING. Why Mlnule Hank Prefers ' Travlata " and Campanlul Fra Dlavolo." Music and the Drama, In tbo written contracts made between Colonel Mapltson and his artists tbero Hre many secret clauses not generally known to tbe public. A member of bis company wbo was discharged for incompe tency some two years ago informed mo of this and quite surprised me by the follow ing revelations : It appears, according to contract, that Campanini is allowed a class of hot rum in the first act of "Faust. ' ' When ho drinks the fiery cup handed to him by Mephistopbeles people suppose that it simply contains a littlo alcohol. I can assure the public now that it is first class Santa Cruz rum punch, and tbo great tenor enjoys it heartily ; in fact, without it he could not do justice to his brilliant song, " Io Voglia Placer," which follows it In tbe Kcrmosso scene, act second, tbo chorister have been on draught, which they ingurgitate while tho old men's cho rus is being sung, and in " Don Qiovanni " every basso who plays Lcjtorello has, iu tbo supper scene (last act), a bowl of hot macaroni or gratin and a quart bottle of Cliianti wine. "Tho llugueuots," it appears, was always a favorite with Col. Mapleson's artists, on account of the spread in act first, while Miss Uauk invariably polishes oil' a pint of Mumin in tho Brandisi scene, Traviatia." In " Fra Diavolo " there is a free lunch and diink, in act first, for the tenor, be fore singing " On Yonder Ruck Keclin ing." and this is the reason why Campa nini wishes to have tbo opera revived. Tbo tenor, by the way, is partial to " ItioSetto," because begets a good glass (if vin oiditiaire in Spurafuclle's bouse bo fore singing "Le Donna e mobile." Miss Uauk always wanted Col. Maple son to revive "Lucrotia Borgia" bo cause tlicio's a lay out " in the last act, and tbo contralto, Miss Cary, wished it to be produced likewise, because in the ' Briudisi " there is an opportunity for drinking sonio good Italian wine. Iu Verdi's "Macbeth" there is a drink ing song and tho colonel has been asked repeatedly to revive it, but he refuses. " Martha " is a favorite with bassi and harvtoni, on account of tbe drinking song (or Plunked. Porter or Dublin stout is the usual beverage when tho opera is given, and as tbo morccau is always en. cored tbe singer gets two drinks. Meniere of the chorus, have a fondness for " Krnaui" on account of tbo open ing chorus, when they all drink and shout in tho iolliest manner possible, and it is the fondest wish of every member of tbe piofcssion to play some day in an opera when it will be nec essary to eat soup and Iamb chops and diink four bottles of brandy. A Father end Son Drowned. Michael Kessler, a Gorman boy, aged twelve years, residing in Passaic, N. J., went bathing in tbo canal in that city aud was drowned, as was his father. His cries for help brought his father to tho spot, wbo endeavored to rescuo bis son, al- . though unable to swim. Tho latter clasped his arms about his father's neck and the result was that both were drowned. It is believed the lad was seized with cramps. The Kesslers had only been in this country seven weeks and wore lu very poor circumstances. The father and sou were employed by Messrs. Jacob Bascho & Sou. The cries of the widow and little children of tbe deceased when they learned of their loss were heart-rendering. John K. Massey Assaulted. A personal assault was made bv "Waddv" James at Franklin court house, Va., on lonn fj. Massey, candidate for congress at-largo. James was attended by tbe county judge, Claiborno, but got the worst of the encounter. Tbero was groat excitement and a disturbance ensued, in which James was rather roughly handled by unknown parties. Mr. Massey, was arrested, it is stated, at the instance of a Mahoneite, who wished to detain him from keeping his political appointments : but after half an hour Massey came off inumpuaiir ana maae a speech irom the platform amid great enthusiasm. The Democratic Readjusters declared their purpose to support him. U ayxs villi:, oiilo, Feb. 11, 1SS0.
