It is stated that, sinco the Hon. Tug Wilson declined to bo knocked out of time in four rounds, the movement to change the name of Bostou to Sullivan City has been abandoned. " There is nothing like settling down," said tho retired merchant confidentially to a neighbor. " When I gave up my busi ness I settled down and found I bad quite a comfortable fortune. "My darling papa 1" As sho spoke these words to her father, the only lather she had in all the wide, wide world, Myitle Hathaway placed about his neck a pair of dimpled white arms and looked into the bearded face with a trust ing, I-would-iiot bct-sevcn-to-threo-on.you look that told more eloquently than could any words of tho deep love sho bore him. Bending over his daughter, and kissing her tenderly where tho Bloom of Youth was thinnest, Mr. Hathaway seated him self on a fiiuteuil, the girl kneeling by his side. "Do you love mo very much, papa .'" she asked, smoothing with her soft white hands the bronzed forehead over which the furrows of time wore beginning to spread. "Why, what a foolish question for my little, ono to ask ;" was the reply, and a kiss stopped the prattle of the pietty lips. 'You know, my darling," tho father cou tiuued, " that my whole life is wrapped up in yours ; that your happiness is ray joj'i your disappointment my bitterest woes." "And would you do anything to please me, papa ?" " Of course I would, my child. Why do you ask such a foolish question?" "Then," said tho girl slowly, every word telling by its pathos of tho earnest ness with which it was spoken, " take me to tho races to-morrow." Ruaching silently around to his pistol pocket Mr. Hathaway drew forth a quarter-stretch badgo and placed it iu his daughter s hand. The girl looked at it eagerly, gave a little cry of joy, and kissed her father again. Itisiug from the fautcuil, Mr. Hathaway went to tho window and looked out upou the night. "God help me," ho said in husky tones, choking down a sob that was welliug up from his supper, " I shall be broke to morrow night, for there are two pacing races and a free-for-all trot on the piogramme." Something New In Politics. Pittsburgh Post. Tho letter of the Democratic candidate for governor. Robert E. Pattisou. accept ing tho nomination, is eminently charac teristic of tho business qualities of the man and is something decidedly now is politics. Theio is no gUBb. here no loud profes sions or a wealth of captivatinjj promises. It is a characteristic of tho Philadelphia leformer, precisely as a long letter full of worn out platitudes or discussing antique issues would have been out of place roiu him. In the great work he has done in Philadelphia, his course has been that of a business man, thoroughly informed of his duties and rcsponsibilitioi. lie has allowed his acts to speak for him, aud been a reformer in deeds rather than iu words. Tho letter is in excellent contrast with the hand-shaking canvass of Gcueial Beaver, and his attempted conciliation of the Independents for forswearing alle giance to Cameron, a renunciation no one believes to bo sincere and only intended as part of campaign of humbug and de ception. Pattison don't have to travel the ntato protesting he is not the personal and po litical lackey of the great boss. Every body knows he owns himself. It is not necessary for him to make'miriute pie ige -, lie will deal honestly with tho people if elected. His record in the past is tho best attainable-guarantee of the future, just as Beaver's record discredits his professions end negatives his pledges. A UTTUE OWY ADYJOTUKE. KarrladatTklrom aad ue Coaiaaaloa of TMwm and jEardarara a Btraafe Btary. I A young girl named Susan Atkins was arrested at Irwin Station, near Pittsburgh, whose history as told by herself js peculiar and romantic. The arrest was mado at the instance of the girl's grandmother, who lives in McKeespbrt. The young lady is thirteen, smart and quite pretty. When brought to headquarters, she ans wered quickly and intelligently all ques tions put, and in the story of her adven tures gave evidenco that she had dealings with the perpetrators of tho McClure trag edy, which occurred in Dead Man's Hol low on the 2d of last August. Sho narrated to Detective Bowden that last September she became tho bride of Bill Fattenbenr. at McKees- port, the ceremony being performed by a preacher of that place, and in this connec tion made some bitter remarks about the preacher for officiating. Evidently she bad grown into a dislike of her husband. Hut when sue came to reier to waru-iuc-Coukey, now in jail and convicted of the McClure murder, and Heenan Lightner, "Redely" Baskin and "Nig Lee," who are wanted for the same crime, her face brightened up, for she claimed them as three of her friends. Thoy had flirted to gether and "Nig Leo" had developed into her sweetheart. At this point Detective Bowden opened the largo front office in which arc kept records of crimes and pho. tographs of thieves and murderers. When the tin-types of the three worth ies just mentioned for whom she ex pressed so much admiration were arrived at, tho young fema'o exclaimed "Oh, that's them !" and then she narrowed tier dances and remarks to her chief attrac tion, " Nig " Lee's image, and sho took this occasion to extol the good qualities of her "Nig." She said she had iu com pany with " Nig " Lee paid several visits to Dead Man's Hollow, and only two weeks before the murder she was with him at the Prcsbytcriau church up there, aud before the services thoy had taken a walk through the grave yard. Sho had been to tho grave yard numerous times with him, and during ono visit to that melancholy placo they had agreed to leave town together and go to some Western country, where her admirer proposed to join some band of Western border outlaws. She was to cut her hair off. "Hiked that man," she said. " He was a good man, always used me well and was liberal." They had ar ranged to fly the day before the McCluro killing occurred. "Nig" told her ho formerly belonged to Jesse James' band of bandits, and had helped in frequent mur ders and robberies. He had shown her a picturo of Frank James. As to the vic tim, McClure, sho has very favorablo reeoilcctionsof him,and was, she declared, " the nicest man she ever knew." Ho had been her Sunday school teacher. Ac cording to Susan there is no use in look ing for " Rcddy " Baskins, as he has had bis hair dyed black. She knew so, for she had read a letter from him only a short time ago and had seen a lock of th jet black hair. She was willing to go to tho reform school. Regarding her flight from home Susan gave, as the cause that her younger brother "bossed Her about ' and abused her. Josh lliHlnga Heard From. NEWPORT. R. 1.. AUT. 11. 1SS0.
