Soma Sensible SugceaUoBato Sojourners, and Much Good Advice to the Can't-Uet- wayA Brigade. Philadelphia Ledger. Tbe yearly exodus which occurs at this season and which temporarily .diminishes the population of Philadelphia by many thousands, is not to bo regarded simply as the result of a desire for change or search for pleasure, as made in compliance with the demands of fashion, or even as a natural attempt to avoid personal discom. fort. Underlying all these comparatively trivial ageucies is the recognition of two important sanitary facts. One of theso is tho necessity wltych almost every one feels to a d eater or less extent for some varia tion of scene and occupation, not merely as a means of enjoyment, but as a help to health and strength. This is a well-worn therao, but none the less important. Hol idays are too few and working hours too long for most of the busy classes in this country, and summer vacations go but a little way in supplying the deficiency. It would be well if the customary week or two could bo doubled, aud every busy, in dustrious, hard worked man and woman, from professional people to laborers, got full share of an idle time, with fresh air and relaxation. This, however, is not the only or, perhaps, not the chief cause which takes S3 many families to the country, or ti the mountains or seashore.'' An equally potent agency is found in the general rec ognition of the fact, as to which there can be no doubt,, that a large city in this latitude is not the bust place for little chil di en during the hot summer months. But those who, go constitute, after all, the small minority of the residents of any such city, most of these being kept there for the greater part of the summer by tho demands of business or the exigency of poverty. It would be well if these people knew what manner of life was most con ducive to tho health of themselves and their children, and could be induced for the sake of both, to study and observe some more simple sanitary regulations. A few of theso may be briefly indicated. Avoid unnecessary fatigue and excite ment, mental and physical ; eat at regular hours and in moderation, abstaining from excess of meats and favoring fresh and perfectly ripe vegetables ; drinking freely of pure milk or water, small quantities at a time ; bathe frequently and change the underclothing every day or two. Observe scrupulous cleanliness as to all portions of your dwelling, and especially as to the sinks, gutters, cellars, privies or water closets. Soup aud water and ventilation are the best disinfectants for dwellings or sleeping rooms. Pare air is the best tonic indeed, it has been recently asserted that " the only certain and unassailable rule of hygiene which will bear universal application, is that pure air is good for tho human animal, apd that tho more he has of it tho better."" The mother who is nursing her baby anil who carefully observes theso rules, which are very easily understood and as easily followed, is eating not only for her own health but also for that of her child. For her especia benefit, however, some additional suggestions may be made. Bathe the child' once a day or sponge it with lukc-warnf-watcr ; dress it lightly aud coolly ; change its clothes at night ; lot it sleep by itself iu a cradle or a trundle-bed ; feed it t regular intorvals ; and, above all, if it isrotful, do not attempt to quiet it by doafts of quack nostrums or any of tho numarous mixtures that put the baby to sleep only at the expense of its health possiluy its life. If it can by any possibility b avoided do not wean an infant during thOj summer, but if tho sup ply of food furnished by tho mother is iu suliicicnt supplement it with goat's or cow's milk to which ono-third of water has been added, or, if that disagrees, which has been mixed with a small quan tity of lime-water. For iufauts already weaned, say from six months to eighteen months, the diet should consist of milk, from one to three pints in twenty-four hours ; dry bread, rusk or milk crackers ; beef-juice or beoT tea ; chicken or muttou broths ; a very little mealy potato, with a small quantity of, boiled rice, corn starch or sago. The chief article of diet should be the milk ; the other articles may be added as the child grows older, aud the hcaviest'meal should be takeu in tho mid dle of the day. r By following the general plan here in dicated aud by taking every opportunity to secure lor the child tho benefit of the fresh air of thef park, tho squares, tho rivers, tho sanitarium, or even the cool sides of the largtreets at sunset, it will no X'ussiuiu 10 urwg cuuuren, 10 wuom a little neglect wfuld prove fatal, safely through the sin cr, and it is the duty ol every conscicutio s parent to see that such practice is anher to as far as practicable. Iu spite of precaution, however, a certain number of casc3 if illness, chiefly of chol era infantum, will occur among the chil dren. If a cnildnddenly becomes pale, is covered with a,clammy perspiration and is attacked withjjjiromiting' and purging, it will be proper, after having sent for a physiciau, to administer a teaspoonful of castor oil, to cover it with a light, warm blanket, to place hot bottles near its feet and legs, to apply a warm mustard poul tice ( four-fiftht flour ) to its abdomen, and if it continues to lose strength and its skin lemains cold and moist, to give four or five drops of brandy in a little, water every fifteen to twenty minutes while wailing for the doctor. The adoption of these simple remedial measures will often convert a threatening case into one quite amenable to treatment. XONSOjKIAL. REFORM. A Novel Plau Yai Doing away with Barber ( Shop. Every man who has been iu a barber shop, and it is tken for granted that every man gets there occasionally, has experi enced the discomforts of the average, bar ber shop. The eloso smell of the shop which is usually in a basement. Tho strong perfumes on the handst which ho insists on rubbing over your mouth and nose and against which you dare not pro test. Tho long waiting for your turn with a favorito barber and if you are not a reg ular customer the questions as to who cut that hair, etc., together with numberless small annoyances, make all men take an interest in the fact that the barbers have taken a new departure, or rather rovived an old custom, and while it can never be popular on account of the expense, it will greatly mollify tbe sufferings of those who can pay for it, and who are in tho habit of going to tho barber shop every day. The plan is for the barber to go to his customer instead of having tbe customer go to the shop. A smart young barber with good address will secure tbe custom often to twenty regular cut timet 8 and he readily picks out the best custom ers from the shop at which he works be fore ho gives up his situation. These cus tomers are carefully selected as to the time they waut to bo shaved, so that the barber can serve all at exactly the desired time. The customers secured, the barber is in dependent, and, as be can servo all the way from fifteen to twenty per day and charges from $2 to $5 per week,he can make a good thing of it, much better than the average young man who rarely gets over $15 per week, aud it is very satis factory to the customer the barber, in fact, doing about all that a valet would do. He can ar range the bath.get out the change of clothes and change the studs and collar buttons to the clean shirt, besides shaving the face and clipping the hair, all in the half hour which is usually devoted to each customer and the price usually asked is not exces sive when the time lost in waiting, fees to the brush boy and the perfumes, pomades, &c, which he is persuaded to buy, are counted, and the pleasure of having every thing done at home in good style, and above all exactly at tho time you want it done, more than makes up for a little ex tra expense, and with certain people it is snre to become popular. It is said that there are over five hundred barbers in New York who are working on this plan, and the fact that tho ones who are run ning shops are complaining of the system, give the statement an air of probability, as yet every barber in this line works in dependently, but no doubt the time will come wjien one man will have fifteen or twonty subs working for him and for whose work be will be responsible. A XnOVCLKTTK IN LKTTICIi-S. A Short but l'oiuted Correspondence, With A Moral ton. London World. I From Mrs. Mortimer to Algcron T , Esq. White's Club My Dear Ai.oy : I write to you iu tLe greatest distress. A short time ago, in a weak moment, I laised a little money on some of my husband's family plate and the vulgar person who advanced tho cash has just informed me that unless I- pay him before the end of tho week ho will put in what he calls " an execution " o. some thing dreadful of that sort. To add to my troubles, John may bo back any day from Carlsbad. I don't know what to do. Perhaps you understand ibese matters. Will you look in to-morrow after six and give me tho benefit of yonr advice ? I am all alone and do so want a little sympathy. Tout a toi, Nellie Mortimer. P. S. It is only a matter of a wretched 300. Prom Algernon T to Mrs. Mortimer, Chester bquarc. My Deak Mrs. Mortimer : I cannot tell you how much I sympathize with you. To my ecdless regret I am obliged to go North to night, otherwise nothing would have kept mo from Chester Square to morrow. I have a debt of 300 which I must pay before Sat urday, and I dare not apply to John. I havo serious thoughts of either chloral or the river Thames. Your unfortunate cousin, Nellie Mortimer. Prom the Hon. Edward C , llouuslow liar racks, to Mrs. Mortimer. j Dear Nellie : Don't do anything rash. I would take the liberty of asking you to make use of my check book ; but, unfortunately, I am afraid that any of tho contents thereof which you might use would bo returned indorsed with an om inous " N. You know that there is nothing I wouldn't do for you, even to selling Banger and the Colonel ; but I am afraid that, at tbe present time of year, tbey would not fetch more than 150 at tho outsido at Tattersalf s. Yotjfrs, very regretfully, Edward C. From Mrs. Mortimer to John Mo: timer, esq., Carlsbad. My Dear John : 1 am almost too fright ened to write to you. For the last two months I have had a debt (which, for our limited income, is, I fear, a very large ono) hanging over me. Unless I have 300 within a week something dreadful will happen.
