Conclusion of the Kaeccififc'st the Normal School A Brilliant oWamstaa Happily Flalabed rmmtatlMPM IMf toma. The exercises of the commencement at MillersvUto normal school were resumed promptly at 2 p. m., withia largo attend ance. The normal school choir sang an anthem entitled ''Prais, the Mighty God" '(Emerson), after which Miss Amanda-Homer, of New Enterprise, de livered an oration, the subject of which. waa " Do They Reraembei' lie ?" Among the God-given desires oil man no one is stronger than that he shtfcild be remem bered. In every phase of life this is manifested. The knowledge that in some hearts there is ft nook dedi cated to onr memory is a source of unbounded pleasure. Remembrance is the only paradteo from which man can not be driven ; while we live we desire to bo remembered, and with Dickens breathe the earnest prayer, " Lord, keep my memory green," as though the bright ness of heaven would grow brighter did wo know that friends' eyes grow occasionally dim as they per mit their thoughts to revert to us and that somo hands are decking our graves. Tho memory of Homer, Milton, Suak sbcarc, Morse and Galileo will never die. Wo remember with complacency and do light those acts of our lives which seem most praisowoithy. If anyone would bo remembered ho must do something noble ; men are remembered no Jess for what they are than for what they do ; the deeds of Abraham Lincoln are held in no fonder memory than the recollection of his noble character. Mun remember Gar field's patience aud Christian resignation and are better for it. A bcautiiul produc tion, abounding in many ioblo possages and very well delivered. Miss.cs Brooks' and Westlake played the overt uro to "Kuy Bias " (Mendelssohn) on two pianos, and it constituted ono of tho most brilliant musical features of tho occasion, tho young ladies distinguishing themselves by their thorough mast.'ry of tho theme of the piueo andj tho firmness aud accuracy of their touch. J "The Stimulus of Opposition" was tho 8ubjcctof an oration by F. M.M. Peunoll, of Patterson, Pa. The law of-antagonism pcivadcs all nature. All me vegetable au.l animal ci cation attests mo" necessity of this principle Tho chronicle of tho past leaches that wherever at struggle en sued there have been two sides to tho question in dispute. Tho history of the Reformation was cited as an' examplo of this truth, and tho speaker also used the strugglo between tbo North and South as an illustration. Honor comonot so much fiouT the victory of conflict as from tho zeal displayed by tho combat ants. The South, said tho speaker, has profited by tho war. Wherever the great est struggle for existence and progress is nccessaty there are the peoplo inspired by the greatest fortitude and bravery. Politi cal parties feel and arc governed by the same truth ; in secular as in religious aflairs the value of opposition is ap parent. Instances woic quoted to thow how individuals have risen to distinction through trial and discouragement. Tho storms of adversity, like the storms of tho ocean, arouse our keenest faculties. Tho greatest epic of our language would have never been written) had not Milton been shut out from the eight of the glory and beautiet of this life.) A thought ful aud scholarly paper, delipcicd with good oratorical effect. Miss Ella Beistle, of Germaalowii, Pa., delivcicd au oration on the) subject of " Strangulatuspro Republica." The fair graduate sketched the tceno when Garfield wrote the words which were the subject of her paper. The littlo lady ventured into a discussion of tho spoils system that ha perverted the politics of the country and made presidents the slaves of bosses aud demagogues, and said.Garliold was above any such plane, and his firm stand in opposition to it cost himliis life. A glowing eulogy of tho murdered presi dent followed ; she said that throcsb tho ordoiiugs of Providence somo men have performed tho greatest servioo for their country by their death. The new presi dent has taken up the work where G.ir riold laid it down and carried it forward to the satisfaction of the Ameiicau people, and it is sufficient for us to know that " God teigns aud the government at Washington still lives." A vocal trio " Fount mi of Lovo Eter nal" (Campana) by Miss SlaufTcr, Miss Ciements and Mr. Royor. camo next on the programme and was a veritable musical gem, tho voices blending sweetly and rendering the beautiful air with charming effect. Oration" Tho Mastery of Mind " J. M. Roberts. Mahanoy City, Pa. Tho two great objects of human knowledge aro the relation of 'matter and mind. Man is a wondrous unity of these two qualities. Through his intellectual faculty ho Ins become master of tho material and animal kingdoms. On every hand wo behold traces of the power of mind upon the face of nature : -'no barrior is imposed to the 'irresistible march of mind; it conquers the material forces of nature with marvel ous apparatus of its own invention. The telegraph is ono of the greatest illus trations of this power of mind ; art is power ; it stands revealed in every wall, looks out from the windows of cottago aud palace : tho twin sistcis, music aud poetry have lecwrdcd tho names of illus trious bous, who seem to have listened to tho music of the spheres and noted down tho anthems of the angelio choir ; the sublimo science of astionomy displays tho mastery of mind, over tho my stories of time aud space, aud proves that it is not confined to the narrow limits of this eai'lh, but wends its flight to tho infinite mys teries of cication. The youuggentlcman, who hits oratorical abilities ot very high order, delivered his well written and thoughtful paper with fervid effect, grace ful gesture and. in a well-modulated voice that raado itself heard and distinctly un derstood throughout tho largo room. "Jubel Overture" (Weber). arranged for piano and organ, was played by Mrs. Brooks, Miss Brooks and Miss Westlako in capital style, each performer displaying a manifest acquaintance with her part, and executing it in tho most thorough and finished manner. " Tho Girl in College " was tho subject of an oration by Bliss Fanny E. Fitch, of Canton, Pa. Tho young lady regarded tho provisions made for young women as meagre ; as a rulo girls aro denied the privileges given to boys. They' are per mitted to accompany their brothers to tho college where they aro denied admission, notwithstanding they arc fully able to keep op with and often distance him in the lower branches. It is alleged that if thoy are admitted tho standard of education would havo to be lowored. It is true that the girl would be out of place on the base ball field ; few if any of onr girls can row ; at football tho averago girl could hardly reach' the accessary standard of compe tence. The young lady thought, however, that the presence of girls in' the college would have a refining and elevating effect upon tbo male students, and expressed the hope tu.it the time was not far distant when " our girls "will enjoy the privilego of a higher education aad together with the boys find the ladder of learning. Vocal Solo" Estellft" (Torry), Miss Warner. The' young lady, who is the teacher of vocal music in the school, has a voice of uaeommoB riehaess, parity of tone and' strength, joined1 with many of tbo little, accomplishments and skill in handliogthat give vocal peformaaces orach of their beauty. In the upper register, in her trilling, and in her staccato tones, the organ displayed an especial degree of native quality and cultivation, and the song was' in every way the musical gem of me programme, au uniuusiaswo enoors was tendered her, and though at the time the lady was unprepared to respond, she subsequeptly sang an amusing ballad about "three old maids" that seemed to please the audience hugely. Presentation of Diplomas. Tho graduates now took seats on the platform and Dr. Brooks conferred the di plomas without unnecessary verbiage; tolling tho recipients that the world would expect them to honor the diploma more than it could honor them. At the conclu sion of this feature of the performance many of the graduates were presented by friends in the audience with flowers and other gifts, those who had taken part in tho exercises having been similarly re membered at the conclusion of their sev eral efforts. Many. of the floral designs were of rare beauty and clegauco. The following is a complete list of the graduating class :. Scientific Course : Frank P. Eberman, Strasburg, Pa.; A. D. Ohio, and its sub ject was "Phases of Modern Thought." rue speaicer tracca me origin ox uciiei m its various phases and said the prtsot-t is an age of investigation. The pure sci entist is an alion to the modes or thought of the Christian ; scienco aud religion dif fer in their relation to man ; science looks outward through nature and history ; reli gion upward to super-nature. Would-be philosophers and scientists delight to wrestle with tho insolvable. The denial of miraclo and revelation is a presumptu ous attempt by small scientists to compass theinfinito in tho small sphere of finite ap prehension. Tho speaker pointed out the fallacious obstacles which a false science impotcntly seeks to place iu tho pathway of religion and predicted the ultimate triumph of tho true belief. Tho oration was a line production signalized by au analyctic sense and deep scholarship, to which an abstract would fail to do full measure of justice. Tho vale dictorian's farewell words to the beard of trustees, to his schoolmates, to tho faculty and principal.and to his classmates, were pervaded by a beautiful sentiment, couched in fine diction and breathing the spirit of tho occasion. His allusions to their dead classmate, Alfred Specht, were iu admirablo taste and to a degree touch ing. Owing to serious indisposition this speaker was obliged to read his oration, Dr. Brooks expressing fears at the outset that tho young gentleman might be un able even to read at all. But he got through it very creditably and was roundly applauded, as he deserved to be. A class song, ontitlod "The class of 82," sung by tho members of the graduating class terraiuatedvthc exercises. The words were written by members of the class. "Tnclr Warfare is Accomplished." Was tho touching Inscription placed upon tho tombstone ot a husband and wire. There is nothing which so sours a man and induces domestic warlarc as ill health; and especially weakness in tho back, loss of physical power, an carlv breaking down ot ody, rendering ono unlit to attend to ills business.
