" Twenty years ago, sweetheart."
As Daphne McCarthy spoke these words
she looked into the face of the man she
loved 60 well, and'the dimpled arm,' whose
nearly whiteness and beautiful rounded
cur es nOD8 B0 hewitchingly through the
of tiC6 dr8SB tDat tne Pri wore, clung
more trusil'y than ever to tnafc of Gco
W. Simpsod, Th dy was Indeed a beau-
tiful onV-a tJoal of. sound, and
light, and scent. $&& the centre
of a little dell into trn.the T?irl was
looking was a stately marine & aronnd
whose base the violets and pannes were
clustering, and showing by their prence
that loving hands had placed them there.
For au instant Daphne did not speak, out
the tears that trickled down her cheeks
told all too plainly of the grief that was
racking her young breast. Finally, she
turned to George, and, smiling through
her tears, placed her head confidingly on
his shoulder and seomod perfectly con-
"bitnotbtrange, darling," sho said,
"that I can never look on the grave of my
mother that mother whom I never saw,
and who yielded up her youug life when I
was born without a sense of bitter grief
ud desolation? Twenty years ago to-dajr,
sweetheart, she died. It is a long time,
dear, is it not ?" and again the girl
'Yes, my pet." replied George. "Gold
smith Maid was a colt then," and, beud
ing down his shapely head with its coro
nal of shoe-brush hair, he kissed the littlo
rosebud mouth. Then pressing the lithe
form more closely to him, he spoke with
a grave tenderness that showol how much
his words meant of a subject that was
very near to his young heart :
"But though your mother bo dead,
Daphne," he said, "you have still my love
to comfort and uphold you. Ami can you
not speak now, darlinghrre beside that
mother's grave, tllo words that will make
me happy for life? Will you not promise
me that when tho autumn comes you will
crown my life with the halo of your love
and become my wifo?"
For a monieut the girl was hileut, look
incr flown and twiniuir nervously around
her fiuecis the tendril of a rose that the
ad plucked from a bauk of the scat let
beauties that blossomed near tho grave.
"W.iH yu marry me, Daphne ?" asked
George ?ain. Still no answer.
" I cannot bear this silence, sweet
heart, indeed J canuot," exclaimed
the young maJ, ls pallid face be
tokening the intense agony from which he
suffered: "You m:steod this terrible sus
pense in some way. T?U me truly, Daphne,
do you love me?" .
Placing her arms about Ins ncelc ami
looking into his face with eyes from which
the glad light of love was streaming.
Daphne said to him in tones that thrilled
bis very blood:
"I should gasp to gurgle."
LOST IN TUK WOODS.
A Deaf and Dumb Child Wanders About
Alone fur Six Days
On the afternoon of July 8, a tcn-ycar-old
son of George Wolfe, a farmer, living
in a thinly settled district in tho Catawissa
Valley, suddenly left home and was un
heard of for six days. The Wolfe house
is surrounded by a hisu fence, built pur
posely for tho cilildreu's protection. The
child was deaf and dumb, and on tho day
mentioned, tluough some carelessness, the
gate of tho main entrance was left open.
In this way the child escaped, wandered
off through the woods and lost its waj.
Tho boy was not missed by its mother for
some hours after. She quickly hurried to
her husband in the field and gave the
alarm . The most diligent search has been
kept up night and day in vain. Two hun
dred peoplo joined in the search. On the
sixth day the boy was found sittiug on a
rock, weeping bitterly aud suffering great
pain from innumerable bites of insects.
His food consisted of tree bark, which he
was eating. Whon found the only clothing
worn was a night shirt. The child was
immediately taken home. Ho cannot re
cover. Josh Billings Heard From.
