OF HONOR SETTLING A DISPUTE WITH PISTOLS A Virginian and Unltlmoreau Fight a Duel On Account of a Woman One of tne Combatants Mortally Wounded. A difficulty resulting in a duel occurred in Lunenberg county, Virginia. The par ties to the aff.vir were Richard Garland of that county, and Joseph Addison, of Bal timore. Friday morning Mr. Boswell, a brother-in-law of Garland, visited Addison and informed him that Garland was out on the public road, nearly a mile from the house at which Addison was visiting, and wanted to see Mm. Do also advised him to have twELEHs with him to see fair play. Addi 'repaired to the placoof rendezvous accompanied by Messrs. Eanes, Orgain and Jones. Upou tbo arrival of the party at the place of meeting they found Garland and his friend Mr. Roach standing in the road. Addison step ped out into the highly and Garland advanced to meet him. When within arm's length Garland attempted to strike his opponent. Addison warded off tbo blow. Garland began to draw bis pistol, when bis antagonist stepped back a pace or two and cried : " None of that." Garland drew bis weapon and Addison quickly followed his example and fired, the ball striking Garland in tbo forearm, just abovo the wrist, breaking the bone.' Garland pursued his antagonist, firing four shots at him in quick succession, one ball striking Addison in tbe right groin and lodging in the back, iiiilictitig a wound which is thought will bo fatal. After the first shot Addison's weapon refused to bo discharged and every attempt to do so failed. Wheu Garland had emptied all of tho chambers of his lcvolvcr ho stepped up to Bos well, who was standing nearby with a cocked pistol in his band, and re marked : "Give mo another pistol." Tho pistol was banded him, Addison exclaim iug, as Boswell icaclicd it to Gailaud, "That is not fair play. ; my pistol will not lire, and I have no other." Tho combat ants, however, wcro separated before they could renew tho conflict. The causa of tlic difficulty is said to have been about a woman in the country Addison's condi tion is very critical and but slight hopes of his recovery aio entertained. A warrant has been i&sucd for the arrest of Gailaud. All of tho parlies interested aro respectably connected. Addison repre sents a manufacturing house in Balti more. Addison was engaged lo a young lady of Lunenburg. While ho wa. in Baltimore a short time ago Garland paid his addresses to tho lady and informed her that his rival was flirting with her. She at onco wrote to Addison and discaided Iiim, accepting Garland's attentions ami engaging herself to him a few days ago. Addison returned to tho neighborhood, sought an interview with tho lady and asked for an explanation of his dismissal. Ho was informed, where upon Addison informed her that Garland was fooling her. Sho wrotts .1 note to Gar land, giviug it to Addison to indorse its contents, which he did, and stated at tho same time that he held Garland responsi ble for tho wholo matter. The 1 (.suit of this corie'poudence was tho bloody meet ing. Ueiitlt ol Unit of tliu l'riuctp.ib;. A later dispatch fiom Buikcville, &iy., Joseph Addison, tho young Baltimoreau i..; ..,- ---- i ..o-.,ir wiii, Hich;i-i Garland in Lunenberg couuty, ruu.iy :u teruoou, died Sunday morning at 0 o'clock. Shoitly after the fatal encounter between the young men Drs. Ilito and May, local physicians, probed for the ball. It was found embedded in the skin in tho right hip. It entered the right groin aud passed through the body. Stiangc to say, des pite tho fearful wound, ' young Addison remained on the ground for several minutes. His mother, brother, F. G. Addison, biother-ic-law, Dr. 3Icr ccr, and nurses, of Baltimore, arrived to take caio of the wounded man. Addison was pertoctly conscious up to within a few minutes of dissolution and was resigned. David Garlaud, the other party to the duel, was arrested Friday and bailed. Coroner Orgain, of Lunenberg, held an in quest over tho remains of Addisou. In accordance with tho facts elicited Garland was rearrested. During tho encounter Addison only lired one shot, which struck bis assailant in tho wrist aud broke his bone. Garland is buffering consider ibl.i pain from that wound. Both of tho young meu aro said to have behaved with gieat coolness during the light. Although Addison's weapou would not discharge bat once, he stood and re ceived the four shots of his assailant with calm resignation. When he found that his pistol would not discharge itself after tho first firo ho demurred to Garland's continuing tho fight, but when he mani fested no disposition to ceaso he did not flinch. The body of young Addison ar rived hcr.o to-day, ea routo to Baltimore. Tho name of the lady who was tho inno cent cause of tho trouble is not known. UK AT 11 OF AIRS. L1XCOLN. Tho Widow of tlie War President I'asscs Away nt Springllold, III. Abraham Lincoln's widow died at Springfield, III., at a quarter past eight o'clock, Sunday evening, her death being the result of a paralyticstroko received the previous night. Sho had not been well, mentally nor physically sinco the assassi nation of her husband, and of lato ycara sho withstood seveial severe attacks. During the present year she made hor home with her sister, Mrs. A.W.Edwards, in Springfield, and it has been evident sinco the begiuning of tho hot weather that sho was in very poor health. Largo boils covered her back and sides, and it was with tho hope of getting rid of theso that sho proposed to go to Ocean Grove, on tho Now Jersey seacoast. to pass tho rest of the summer. On Saturday night she was stricken with paralysis, the stroke depriving her of consciousness, which sho did not regain. A telegram was sent to hcrson, tho secretary of war, and ho re plied that ho would leave Washington this evening for Springfield. Tho remains will bo interred by tho side of President Lin coln. Mrs. Lincoln's maiden name was Mary Todd. She became the wife of the young lawyer of Springfield by private mariago in that place on the 4th of November, 1842, when ho was about to enter upon his poli tical career. The eighteen years of their married life passed thero were very happy. Mr. Lincoln was fond of his home aud tho wife was devoted to her husband and to her children, Robert, the secretary of war, and "Tad," whose death was such a savero blow atthe White House. When, on the 18th of May, 1860, news camo of Mr. Lincoln's nomination as the uepuou cau candidate for tho presidency, ho said to those around him : " Well gentlemen, there's a little woman down at our house who would liko to hear this ; I'll go down and tell her." Mrs. Lincoln was much excited and elated when told of tho nomi nation, and throughout the campaign that followed she constantly aided ami coniiorc ed the coming president. A great strain was put upon Mrs. Lin coln at the Whito House. The mansion was thronged daily with politicians, politi cal delegations and officers. She bent her self to the task and succeeded in going through it. Just as sho was expecting some rest tho greatest blow of all came and Mr. Lincoln was killed at her side. Since then her life has been far from happy. She spent some time in Europe, returning from Nice over a year ago. MIX. Wit-Son's KKCEPXIOX. A Fine Slugclng Affair, In Wnlch all For malities Were Eschewed. Philadelphia Times. Wearied with hot weather, tennis and croquet, certain members of society who have not gone to the seashore or the mountains have for a past week been hun gering, as it were, for something to relieve the monotony of life. The relief came test night when Mr. "Tag " Wilson held a reception at Mr. Arthur Chambers' 'Champion's Rest," on Ridge avenue. Those guests who came early and were at tired principally in undershirts -and sailor cut trowsers met Mr. Wilson in tho cafe and were treated with that courtesy for which those who wear the insignia of the " P. R.",aro famous. Those who came after 9 o'clock found, tho distinguished "slugger" in bed. Raw beefpraw mutton, raw eggs and raw bread crumbs have a somniferous effect upon Mr.- "Tug," and consequently when ho enveloped his herculean limbs in his snowy night shirt and retired many of his friends wept with disappointment. They were partially con soled, however, by tho news that Mr. Wilson was in perfect health and was expected to wipe up the stage of Gilmoro's Garden with Mr. Sullivan, in New York to-morrow evening. Tho rumor that Mr. "Tug" had by mistako devoured several bouquets that wore sent him by feminino admirers was indignantly denied. There was music in tho first story of the " Champion's Rost," pool playing in tbe second and boxing in tho third. Cheery Mr. Arthur Chambers moved about aud inado the guests fcol perfectly at home. The thumping began shortly after nino o'clock and for two hours tho sport was uninterrupted. Mr. Mallon and Mr. Kelly pounded each othor pleasantly for ten min utes and Mr. Mallon camo out of the play with an cyo liko a ripo egg-plant. Mr. Tison, Mr. Mahoncy, Mr. Donovan, Mr. Saueisand Mr. " Fish " Carter, an Afri cau gentleman, pounded each othor indus triously at intervals and made the roeop tiou what tho gentlemen present declared was a " bloody fine show."
