Wltateay tho bells ot San Bias - ' To the ships that southward pass From the harbor of Mazatlau ? To them u i nothing more Than, the sound ol surf ou the shore, Nothing more to master or man. Hut to me, a dreamer of dreams. To whom what Is and what seems Are oltcn one and the same The Bells ol San Bias to me Have a strange, wild melody. And arc something more than a name. For bells kre the voice of the church ; They have tones that touch and siatch The hearts of young and old ; One sound to all, et each Lends a meaning to their speech, And the meaning is manifold. They are a voice ol the Tast, Of an angel that Is lading fast. Of a power au -tun; and grand. When 1 he flag of Spain unfurled Its folds o'er this western world. And the Priest was loid ol the land. The chapel thatonre looked down On the little seaport town lias crumbled Into the dust ; And on oaken beams below The bells swing to and Iro, And arc green with mould and t u-t. " Is, then, the old faith dead," They say, " and In its Ptcad la some new faith proclaimed, That we arc roiced to remain Naken to sun and rain. Unsheltered aud nshuiucd ? " Once, lu our tower tdoot We rang over wall aud root . Our warnings and our complaints : And round about us there The white doves filled the air, Like the white soul s ol the saint. ' The aainU ! Ah, have they giown Forgetful of their own ? Arc they asleep, or dead. That open to the sky Their ruined Mission He, No longer tenanted ? " Oh, bring us back no more The vanished days of yore. When the world with faith v.a filled ; Bring back the fervent zeal, The hearts of fire and steel, The hand i that believe and build. "Then lioin our tower again We will tend over land and main Our voices of command. Like exUed kings who return To their thrones, and the people leant That the Priest is lord of the land !" O Beds of San Bias, in vain Yc call back the last again ; The Past Is deaf to your prayer : Outot the shadows of light The wpild rolls into light; 11 la daybreak everywhere. Henry Wadsworlh Longfellow. ! TOBACCO IN 1'KNNSYL.VANIA. Some Notes on Curing the Crop. G. A. G.' in Country Gentleman. Theic is probably no process iu the growing or manipulation of tobacco tbat is generally so little understood as the curing. Fat mors who have cultivated tobacco for years with good success, usually express conflicting opinions upon tbo principal points of the subject, and from all tbat I have been able to learn fioni ex perience aud observation on the subject, I must admit that 1 am uuable to detico the laws which govern the process of curing tobacco. Therefore I ask to be excused for giving more theory iu this article thati practice. It is well kuowu among grow ers cf tobacco that in some seasons tobac co iu certain sections will cure with gen ally good colors and desirable qualities, aud at other seasons the re verso is the case, aud qualities throughout some sec tions are poor and the tobacco undesirable. At the samo time there is always some variance in different crops, owing, doubt less, to the various soils and their condi tion as regards fertility aud tilth, and to the kind of barn iu which the crops were cured. Tho cause of these variations iu quality from very good to poor, in different years, has not been satisfactorily explained. The subject is an important one, aud deserves more consideration than it has received, for in a great measure tho quality of to bacco depends upon the manner in which it is cured. Color is an important clement in the quality of tobacco, and it is only by proper curing tbat good colors can be produced, and yet with the majority of the producers of seed-leaf tobacco, light or dark colors are only obtained by acciden tal circumstances. Fashion at the present time demands rich, dark colored- wrappers for covering cigars, bence the importance of knowing how to produce them. It is pretty certain tbat tho weather has much to do with the curing of tobacco. It is well known that in some seasons the tobacco in a certain section will rule light in color, while in another year dark colors will prevail, aud at other times heavy losses result from polo burning. These varia tions of quality probably result from the general character of tho weather during the process of curing, and serve to indicate laws which rarely fail. These are that rapid curing tends to produce light colors, aud slow curing dark colors. With the light colors there is likely to be other undesirable qualities, such as rust, white veins, poor texture, &c. It is generally believed that very rapid drying tends to produce undesirable qualities in the cured leaf, and therefore, the curing barn should be so arraugrd as to prevent the rapid curiug in dry weather. In damp, murky weather there is always danger from " pole-burn " while the tobacco is green, and care must be exercised to pre vent this. Right hero is a point where a difference in opinion occurs. It is my practice to keep tho ventilating doors of the curing barn open during hot, lowry, damp weath er, so as to encourage a circulation of air among the plants. Thero are good growers who follow the reverse course and keep all doors tightly closed during periods of damp weather, whether the temeraturo is warm or .cool, their argument being that by keeping the building tight tho hot, damp air is excluded. Which of these opiuions is correct I'do uot know, but it is pretty certain that a certain degree of heat and dampness will affect tobacco seriously whether the doors are opened or closed, aud for this reason lew or ho growers are exempt, from dam age .to their tobacco from pole sweat. The best advice that I can give on this subject is to keep the curiug baru closed tightly during periods of dry, wiudy weather, and to encourage a free circula tion of air during damp weather. It is daring 'muggy" weather, when there is little air stirring, that pole-sweat is most likely to occur, and it is theu that ventila tion is needed. It is probable that an artificial means for ventilating tobacco sheds could be made most usfeul, and if it could be discovered at what degree of temperature and stage of the barometer pole-rot begins, growers could prevent danger to their crops with only a small outlay. The loss that occurs in some tobacco growing sections during come seasons when pole-sweat prevails, amounts to- many thousands of dollars. These losses could be prevented by sup plying artificial ventilation to the plauts when the condition of the weather is such 'as to cause the damage. - M" .J.XCK M-t"Sept. i 1879.
