London, July 8. At the Mariow re
gatta to-day at Mariow, on the Thames,
the Hillsdalo crew from tho United States
beat the Mariow crew by a clear length.
The Cookham crew, which was also en
tered for the samo race, was scratched.
The Mariow crew had the centre station
and the Htllsdales the Back side of tho
river.
London, July 8 Directly after the
start the Hillsdales fouled the Marlow's
badly. The latter, however, did not claim
a foul. The Hillsdales went rapidly ahead
and after leading at one time by a hundred
yards, won easily by a length and a quar

of stewards of the National Trotting as
sociation has offered a special purse for
Cleveland, Buffalo and Rochester of $4,000,
open to all $2,000 for St. Julien and
Trinkett to enter and start, open to all ;
other purses $1,200 to first and $800 to
second and $500 extra to the fastest horse
trotting in 2:14 or better ; $500 additional
extra to horse trotting in 2:12 or better ;

2:10 or better ; no entrance required on
added money. The no record class is

Mexican Soldiers Win a Victory by Superior

patch from Piedras Negias, Mexico, says :
" Last evening news was received hero oi
a battle between lo contrabands and w
soldiers acting under orders of the custom
house. Tho contrabands were overtaken
by the troops ten leagues from here while
in camp. Half the troops attacked them
mounted and the others opened on them
from a ravine The contrabands fought
desperately, lobing two men. Of the ctis
torn party, ono Coyelthua Ganzalcs, fell.
Nine smugglers, together with upwards of
forty bales of goods, a number of guns,
and forty horses, wero captured."

They Assault a "Gang or Italian Laborers
New York, July 8. An Italian inter
preter named Peter Marchio, reported to
Chief of Polico Murphy, that while cross
ing Battery Park this morning with a large
gang of Italian laborers they were assault
ed by some strikers, and some of his men
wero badly boateu. Marchio and two
of the foremen of the laborers, by present
ing revolvers, kept their assailants at bay
until the police arrived. Sonic of tho
strikers, be added, threatened to follow
the Italians to Jersey city, and bo asked
protection, which Chief Murphy engaged
to afford.
Proceedings in Uongroxx.
Washington, July 8. In tho House
Mr. Crapo, of Massachusetts, submitted
the report of tho conference committee on
the bill to cnablo national banks to extend
their corporate existence. Mr. Ilaudall,
of Pennsylvania, made the point of order
that the report was not accompanied with
tne explanatory statement required by tho
rules, and the point being sustained the
conference report was withdrawn, but Mr.
Crapo will endeavor to got it beforo the
House during the afternoon.
The House at 11 :20 went into committeo
of tho whole on tho sundry civil appro
priation bill.
In the Senato the river and harbor bill
was taken up again and the Hennepin
canal project further discussed.
The Old Crowd Coining Back.
Washington, July 8. Tho Senate com
mittee on the District of Columbia, to
whom was referred tho nomination of ex
Senator West for 'district commissioner,
agreed to-day to report to tlm Senate in
favor of his confirmation. There was con
siderable opposition on tho part of the
Democratic members of the committee,
based upon Mr. West's political course in
Louisiana, and tho voto in his favor was
strictly a party one.
Struck by A Locouiotlvo anil
Killed.
Jersey City, N. J., July 8.
-Abram B.
Cole, aged 55, while walking to-dav on the
track of the Newark branch of the New
York, Lake Erie & Western railroad, at
the west cud of tho Bergen tunnel, was
struck by an engino and instantly killed,
his body being terribly mangled. Mr.
Cole was for many years proprietor of tho
Washington house on Grand avenue, a
noted resort of railroad employees.

Wilmington, July 8 Benjamin S.
Caulk, a native Delawarean and nephew
of Comtnodoro McDonough, the hero of
Lake Champlain, died at Newark yester
day evening, in his 85th year. He was a
member of the state House of Represen
tatives in 1819 and 1871. Ho was also a
largo land owner. Tho funeral will tako
place next Tuesday morning.

reports of foul play were current, but a

The Intervening Powers About to March
on Alexandria.
London, July 8. A dispatch to the
Times from Paris says the formal invita
tion of the powers to the Porte asking it
to intervene in Egypt, will be delivered on
Monday. A reply is asked lor by Wed
nesday. If the Porte refuses or seems
afraid to accept, 25,100 men, with 15,000
in reserve, will be concentrated by the in
tervening powers. Tho army will land at
Aboukir and will bo divided into two
parts. One will march on Alexandria and
be supported by the fleet, whieh will open
fire as soon as tho army is landed. Tho
other portion will cross the Dry Lake of
of Aboukir, to Kafr Devar and seize the
railway at Damanhour.Arabi Pasha's, the
only means of retreat, and will thus force
him to either fight or yield.
