ABOUT AGRICULTURE.
Other Crop!
Wbear. Grass, Corn, Oats and
Prospects.
llarrisburg Telegraph.
Thomas J. Edge, secretary of tbo Penn
ejlvania board of agriculture, is in receipt
oftho most encouraging reports of the
condition or the wheat, rye and oats crops.
"When the latt quarterly agricultural re
port was printed, about a month ago, the
indications pointed to a smaller yield of
wheat to the acre than last year, but since
then tbo cereal has exhibited such im
provement as to justify the prediction that
considerable more bushels to the acre will
bo raised in the 6tate than last year, and
that the crop will be one of the most sat
isfactory in Pennsylvania agricultural his
tory. Owing to tbo failure of grass last
year, on account of the protracted drought,
the acreage of wheat this year is much
larger than in 1881, in conscqucnco of
which and the healthy condition of wheat
the yield promises to be unusually large.
The midge is tbo only insect which has
thus far preyed on wheat, and its destruc
tive influence has been confined to a com
paratively small portion of the wheat
fields in tbo state.
Rye has kept apace with wheat in qual
ity, and the crop will be good. The cut
ting of rye is now in progress, and in the
counties adjoining Philadelphia much of
it has been removed from the fields and
taken to market. The straw of tho lye
stalk is of nioro value than the grain,
owing to tho use it is put to in the manu
facture of paper. The early cutting of
rve is mainly due to tho fact that partially
gteeu straw is preferred in paper mills to
the real ripe article.
The oats crop in the grain promises very
well. Tho straw is a little short however.
The yield of grass will be considerably
iu excess of that produced last year, but
far. from the average. Tho long continued
hot and dry weather of last year burned
tho roots of much of the grass, and it is
short in consequence. There has been a
great advancement, however, in its growth
tho past month.
The corn crop prospects aie no! encour
aging, but if the weather the next two
months should bo satisfactory the agri
culturist may be treated to an agreeable
disappointment. The cool weather this
year has been the cause of the unsatisfac
tory condition of tho corn. Iu numerous
instances the seed rotted in the ground
and a second plauting has been required.
The conscqueuce of tho late plauting is
that corn is exceedingly backward iu
growth as compared with more favorable
yars.
Notwithstanding tho ravages of the po
tato bug, which destructive insect is as
numerous as ever, the potato crop will be
very good. The weather ef tho past month
has given the growth of potatoes a marked
impetus.
Secretary Edge is regularly informed of
the condition of the crops by about 450 its
porters, who are' distributed through the
sixty counties of tho state. There are
from six to eight iu each county, and when
the reporters are of equal leliability iu a
county their reports are averaged by tho
socretaiy. Otherwise the reports of tho
moro experienced agiiculluiists arc ac
cepted as correct. From tho reports thus
far received, showing the condition of
the crops, Mr. Edge is certain that the
next quarterly report issued from his de
partment will bo full of gratifying intclli
gauce to tho producer and consumer.
