How tun World Now Kegards Tliem The
Good Tney do la Society and in the
Household.
Harper's Bazaar.
It is loss than forty years since that
courteous, gallant and fopling of phrases,
Mr. N. P. Willis, characterized the class
of single women as " Tlte Driedups." One
can not imagine a writer of equal reputa
tion, a gentleman of equal breeding, com
mitting Buch a discourtesy to-day. From
his point of view, it was as if a hunchback
should oe taunicu wim ms ucui spine, ui
a cross eyed man with his obliquity of vi
sion; for ho assumed that unmarried
women weic celibate because they were so
plain, so poor in charms, so unattractive,
thar. no man would marry them.
If literature aud society arc better man
nered now, regarding single women with
courtesy, and often with admiration, it is
because our theories about them arc made
to square more nearly with our facts. It
is matter ol common observation mat, in
every circle some of its most delightful
members arc maidens past their youth.
They are cultivated, witty, gra
cious, hospitable, charmingly dxesscd,
pimpantc, from the ruff at their throats to
the lotettes on their slippers. Aio these
the womeu whom men pass by '.' Or there
are those others who do not choose society,
but who are the ilea ex mnchina in so many
households, the power behind the thionc
greater thau the throne itself, the incar
nate jjdgmcnt, wisdom, economy, liber
ality f the family. Are men so dull that
they do not sec how these beautiful ones
hold happiness in their hands and scatter
it broadcast ?
Thackeray, that teudercst of cynics,
that roost serious of jesters, declared that
any woman Bright marry any man if she
would. And it is ceitaiuly true that most
old maids have declined to pay the price of
marriage. The just cause and impedi
ment which havo withheld them from the
holy estate of matrimony have been from
within, not from without. They ceitaiuly
do uot hold themselves too good to marry.
They concede that true marriage is the
ideal state. Bat it has been their fortune
not to iiud that other hull' and fiiiJilhnenl
of themselves, whiso C'liniii could alone
justify the vowing of vow -. They are too
honest, too bravo an i too pure to use
marriage as a makeshift.. And it is plain
thatthero cannot le in existence moic
thought! til, mote large heat ted, more self
sacrificing, more modest, tender and
truth Jut women than those.
As the woiM comes to fcce that a
woman i.-; as .scparal an entity, as dis
tinct an individuality, as a mau, it will
pay less :u.d li..ss repaid to her accidents,
aud mere t' herself. It will not rake it
for granted that she has had a " disap
pointment " at a tender ago, or buried her
youthful lover, or been tho victim of a
misunderstanding," if she write herself
Miss at forty. Nor will it audibly wonder
why a charming woman is unman ied alter
tweut-iiv. It, will admire her for her ad
niinihleuuss, whether that has had tho
csrtiiicritu of smo man's expiesscd appro
bation or not. It will permit her to live
hor own life.
But though it was the old notion of
feminine incompleteness and subjection
which made the lot of single women a re
proach to tho unthinking, they themselves
have not been blameless. Their patience
has been too endless, their meekness too
long suffering, their submission toe com
plete. Almost with one accord have they
" consented to efface themselves, as tho
Fietich say, grieving tho while in silence
that raanieti sistets and preoccupied
brothers in law and gay young nieces
alas, that even disappointed parents wcie
so icadv to efface them. For there is a
certain sanction in acceptance. When
they acquiesce in the general verdict that
thfy aiv n.ibjilie.s, tlicy enter the final
judgment.
:seli s.ici ifLe is a '. irtuc much misunder
stood. To deny one's -elf for a great end,
to help the wc.!:. to iclieve tiie burdened,
that i hi'ioic But onlv to sew for tho
idle, to take Mvps for thuincon.sidciatc, to
pamper .inipy aud lolly with endless ser
vices, to be an unpaid upper seivant iur

of mi account that selfishness may pi os
pir, this is s uv.sh, and perpetuates ty
ranny. This degrades aud belittles her
who ministeis, as it mllates and misleads
her who is ministered unto.
The siugie woman may maintain that
piccii'Us ciguity of beating which com
mands respect. It' h.r plate be below the
salt, it is left her to piove that where
Macicgor sits is the head of the table
sor sho.ild she slight her dress, and pi t
away fiom her the ornaments aud grace
of hie. Thy are her armor and defense,
her argument and appeal. For it is ior
h'r t-.siiow, in her own person, how much
mjie is the woman than the wife, aud how
incontestable i her right to a place in the
house, ii s.iciety, aud iu the world.
All women love love. The hope of a
bom.' of her own, of a loud husband, aud
the touch of baby hands stir3 early iu

of loss aud hardship that she sees that
hope fade without fruition, win u

But life is full of compensations. It is
loft her to enjoy, to labor, and to aspire.
Peihaps it is left her to illustrate, as her
moic fetteied married sislcr cannot, the
leal capacity, the actual power of achieve
inent, of her sex.
