Bosten Letter.
This ig a great place for the people of
the stage te summer in and about. Within
a radius of thirty miles from the Hub of
the Universe are new te be found players
of such repute as Jehn Gilbert, Agnes
Beeth, Charles It. Therne, jr., Lawrence
Barrett, Stuart Robson, W. II. Crane and
Sara Jewett, net te speak of these who
are residents of Bosten the year round,
notably William Warren, the veteran com
edian, who will celebrate in October next
U12 fiftieth anniversary of his debut before
the garish lamps, and his esteemed asseci
ate, the well-known ' old woman " of the
Bosten Mug jum.Mrr.Vincjnt. By-thc-way,
I met Mrs. Vincent tbe ether afternoon
at the Park theatre, where Clara Merris
was giving a matinee of " Caraille." The
geed old lady came behind the scenes at
the close of the pcrfermancc, aud was intro
duced te tbe gifted Clara, in the dressing
room, which, for her convenience as an in
valid, had been improvised out of one of
the proscenium boxes. Mrs. Vincent is
an indefatigable Ladv Bountiful, and one
of her neighbors in the theatre had handed
her $5 for the relief of a peer family in
which bhe is interested. Te this contribu
tion Miss Merris added a little roll of bills,
amounting te $G, and with this impromptu
subscription the geed "old woman "of
the museum made glad the home of her
e.ljects of charity that very evening. Mrs.
Vincent is net without superstition, I
find. She shares with Brignoli and
ether artists a lirm belief that
rubbing a hunchback's hump will
bring geed luck and has pur
sued this theory for years, te such an ex
tent, indeed, that she declared all the
hunchbacks in Bosten knew her, and, as
a rule, manage te get out of her way
when they see her threatening them with
a conciliatory lub. One day in a street
car sbe saw a quaint little man and "made
for him," before, however, she could say
" my dear, can you teM ni," etc., and
managed te rub the magic hump, be
had perceived her intention and dropped
off the rear platform ; having transacted
her business at the theatre, however, sbe
met him face te face iu the street. He
scowled, turned hump and ran and sbe
after him, but, alas '. the besscc went faster
than Nelie Dame of the museum and
Quasimodo canie victorious.
The ether day at the station of Mau-chcster-by-the-Sca,
wheie Landlord Jun
ius Brutus Beeth has his Mascouemo
heuse and Jehu Gilbert, of Wallack's
nurses his ripened years in a quaint home
stead with au orchard and "old oaken
bucket " attached, I encountered an affa
ble hunchback whom I mentally christened
the Mascot of the Masconemo. Despite,
however, the fact that he called me "my
friend" and confided te me the interest
ing intelligence that, whereas the hotel
'.barge " taxes guests " cents for each
trunk or package, he only charges 20 cents
te convey them up or down the hill, I
could net summon up courage cueugh te
rub the hillock of his back. In his gla.ed
cap and blue checked blouse the Mascot
of the Mascouemo, or rather of Manches
ter, was a study of rather rugged iiictur-
esqueness, but for a' that, I cannot say I
" blessed the day I met the hunchback."
Leeking across the blue waters from
"the singing beach" which, combined with
the cool aud fragrant Essex weeds, makes
Manchester se delightful a resort, euc can
E9i the long low line of the Cohesset coast
wbere se many prime favoiitcsef the stage
aw "resting." Ten years age Cehassct
was invaded iu a mere modest way by a
little band from Daly's Fifth Avenue
theatre, New Yerk, including James
Lewis and his wife and Clara Merris. They
were ledged and bearded at the cottage of
a fisherman named Bi.jah Baker, who had
a remote connection with "the professien''
in having once been attached te a circus,
the standing introduction te all his anec
dotes was: "Winter of '49, spring of '30,
when I travelcd with June & Anzcvine's
circus !" The landlady, "Mrs. Bi Baker,"
was also a character; when Clara Merris
asked her hew she was going te
find the lesidcnce of a sailor,
a friend of htr"s, who used te live in
New Yerk, but whose number she had
forgotten, "Mrs. Bi Baker" made an
swer : Ye dcrned fule, yew ; yew don't
suppose I'm going te New Yerk without
my compass, de yew ?" The holiday
makers used te peep ever a hillock aud
see Edwin Ferrest jogging moodily along
in a buggy behind a lazy horse ever a
dusty read ; new Cehasset is changed, it
is mere modern, and yachts and phalens
are no strangers te the place. Still, the
residents arc net required te go into full
dress aud a flannel suit aud straw hats
ha70 been known te suflicc for many a
day. Cehassct is reached by one of the
branches of the old Colony railroad.
Beyond Mauchcstcr-by-the Sea, indeed
beyond Rockport, which is the "jumping
off" "place, is a lovely sea-swept nook,
known as I'igceu Cove, because, tradition
has it, a vast and countless fleck of
pigeons perished there, en masse, during
a storm many years age; their delicate
plumage and tender bones fairly whitened
the bauks of the little inlet. It is here that
Miss Sara Jewett has her summer home,
felicitously christened Windycet, aud it is
here that the favorite actress is new so
journing with her mother and a married
sister, a fair young matron with three little
sons. Miss Jewett will ictuaiu at Windy
cot until about a month from new. when
she accompanies the Union Square theatre
te California aud thence homeward ou a
tour which will last until nearly Xmas time.
Pigeon Cove is a capital plana te rest in ; the
healing and aromatic odors from piue tree
groves mingle with fresh, saline breezes
frcm the Atlantic, which spreads unbroken
in front of this, the furthercst cxtieinity
of Cape Ann. The settlement of villas.
cottages aud a single hotel, is bright aud
pieturesque in its coats of lavender, pale
coffee color, or, peihaps, dark green paint,
relieved with dark red ; the coast is net a
sandy beach, but rocky, and the sea, en
stormy days, washes almost the basj of
the marine dwellings. It was brightly
-blue and glistening in the sunshine the
fOWIP I saw it ; directly iu front of Wind y-
cot appears a distant range of Maine
mountains and the low line of the Isle of
Sheals, where Celia Thaxtcr was born and
bred, and which her romantic history and
local lyrics have made famous. Next
te Miss Jewetiscottige is that of the
daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Chapin, of
New Yerk, who for a quarter of a century,
sojourned at Pigeon Cove throughout his
summer vacation ; the former resi
dence of the famous preacher is
painted iu dark green, iclicved
with dark red, and made blight with
striped red and white awnings. It was
through their friendly relations with Dr.
Chepiu's family that Miss Jewett and her
people first came te Pigeon Cove five years
age. " Windycet " has a most command
ing site ; it is a two-story house with a
cupola painted in pale coffee color and
dark red ; surrounded by pines, save ou
tne seaward side, ana notauie ier a com
modious piazza ; the interior is furnished
with simple clegance in the perfect tastes
feverned by "decerative art" canons,
ertierics of embroidered mummy cloth,
crimson silk shades aud white dotted mus
lin curtains, cool crimson mattings, great
silky black bearskin rugs, rattan furniture
embroidered in roses, bric-a-brac, china
ornaments, etchings, engravings, ct al.,
constitute some of the features of this re
fined summer home. Thcre are ene or
two pets including a very devoted pair of
ted finches christened "Jack and Jill,"
and the very paragon of pugs, one " Dan
dy." Seme spiteful female correspondent who
apparently relies upon her imagination for
her facts, and who surely could never
tiAVA neon Mica Tettpt t nither On Or off the
stage, and yet pen such an obvious false
heed, recently depicted tne lair young ac
tress with only such animus as an old,
ugly and disappointed woman whom soci

spoiled by the footlights or cosmetics,
and her features are quite regular ;
as for her age, she is certainly
the youngest actress who holds the posi
tion of leading woman at any of our thea
tres. Her debut is ou record ; it tee
place in '72 at the Fifth Avenue theatre
in Mr. Bronsen Heward's comedy of
"Diamonds," and she has, therefore,
only been ten years before the public. I
ci.nii n thnt. she was then barely
twenty, certainly sbe did appear te be
even as old as that. Clara Merris, Fanny
Davenport, Linda Dietz were well known
actiehscs at the Fifth Avenue theatre be
fore Miss Jewett ever set feet en the
stage, uet that it much matters. A
nrettv woman is neve: elder than she
Ineks. and enlv soured seniors of her own
sex want te drag her up the mountain of

turned years age ; the peer eia uewagers
