"Can you net answer me, Gwendelen?"
Up from the meadows the soft breezes
of a perfect Jane evening were wafting the
faint perfume of the cowslip and a dead
horse, and as Geerge W. Simpsen and
Gwendelen Mebaffy steed near the gate
whose decrepit appearance told with mere
eloquence than could mere words of the
deathless passion that enslaved their souls,
both felt that a crisis in their lives had ar
riveda moment had come which would
in the misty future that stretched away
before them, like one of William M.
Evarts' letters, be either a bright
beacon of hone and iev te leek back upon
with gladness, or a desolate landmark like
the ligbtning-nven trees that one never
beholds without a feeling of sad
ness. Secure in the consciousness of his
own merit that sterling merit which al
ways lies in a strong arm, clear brain, and
large feet and yet with a modest diffi
dence concerning bis own worth, the young
man steed there in the gleaming with a
half reluctant caten-the-back-fcnce ex
pression that lent an added beauty te his
pure young face, and made mere plead
ingly tender the earnest, father-is-coming
up-the-frent steps leek with which he re
garded the beautiful girl who steed by his
side. He had asked her te be his wife te
leave parents, sisters, brothers, and all
the endearing influence of a happy, Chris
tian home where two girls are kept, and
go out with him into the wide world as a
helpmeet and companion. lie had told
in fervid sentences of the great love he
bore her a love that would ever ba the
guiding star of his life, he said, cheering
him wnen the blade cleuus 01 auvcrsuy
and despair hung heavily in the horizon
of his hope, and without which his whole
existence wculd be one arid trackless
waste en which lay the whitcd skeletons
of ambition and hope ghastly remnauts of
a life whose final wreck was all the mere
sad because of the happiness which it
might have held had love net flown with
mocking laugh when pleaded with se
7 passionately.
When it canie te ornamental lying,
with two rows of fluting up the back,
Geerge took iirst money."
Gwendelen had steed in graceful peise
as he spoke, one car thrown slightly for
ward, and her right feet covering tlie
deer mat, and, new that he had finished,
was looking down in maiden shyness.
while the rosy blushes that chased each
ether under the dazzling complexion would
have told, if anybody could have seen
them, of the emotions that wcic agitating
her young soul. But no words came from
her lips, these rosy ripe portals that opened
with such languid grace when there was
pie in the heuse and Gcerge began te
fear that perhaps he had talked her te
sleep. Presently, however, she drewquite
clese te him, put her hand in his, and,
resting her cheek upon his shoulder, she
said : Yes, Geerge, I will marry you."
' But when '.'" ask the young man, a
horrible fear that his bluff was te be
called, chilling his very bleed.
" I will marry you," repeated Gwen Gwen
eolen, " when a bicycle rider is elected
president."
Tinning away te hide his emotion,
Gisorge muttered in low, pirati3.il tones :
" Thank heaven, I am safe."
Hew te get Sick. Expose yourself day and
