Astounding Score of the Veteran Flayers or
Yonkers The Burgeon' Care for the
Wounded A Hetel Man's Misfortune.
New Yerk Times.
Undoubtedly one of tbe most remarkable
games of baseball ever Witnessed in tbe
United States was played in tbe Palisade
Mountain house grounds, by tbe Veteran
baseball club of Yonkers. It is safe te say
that net one of tbe many spectators present
ever saw. or beard of sucb an exhibition of
science. In some respects it exceeded the
wildest hopes of even the eldest members
of tbe organization, who all declared
themselves mere than astonished at its
issue. Arriving en the ground at ft:30 a.
m., the club, according te its yearly cus
tom since its organization in 187::, pro
ceeded te a clam bake, by way of toning
its muscles up te tbe necessary pitch. At
this were" present tne Hen. Henry I Bre Bre Bre
voert, president ; the Hen. E. A. Nichols,
first vice president ; Cel. Jeseph L. Pro Pre
seus, second vice president ; James Stew
art, third vice president, (the ether l'J
vice presidents were unavoidably absent,
having been unable te secure bail ;) Geerge
W. White, grand secretary ; E. O. Car
neuter, erand treasurer : Jacob Read,
grand caterer ; Dr. Herace B. Pike, grand
surgeon ; the Rev. C. E. Allisen, grand
chaplain, and the Rev. Jehn Read, first
assistant chaplain. (The 30 sub-assistant
chaplains unfortunately were ou special
missionary-service in Timbucloe.) There
were also 42 members present. The ic
maindcr, if any, had permanent engage
ments at a public institution a few miles
above Yonkers. The efforts of the grand
caterer te corner the clam market for this
particular bake had proved unsuccessful,
and only about 270 barrels of the fruit had
been secured. In the competition which
followed Judge M. 11. Ellis scored 19
trays of chowder iu 17 minutes, followed
by 13 trays of clams. He complained of
net feeling well when beginning his heroic
struggle, and merely said he would take a
few clams te sort of stimulate his appetite.
He wen the first prize, however, .ludgc J.
P. Sanders coming in second wilull chow
ders and 12 trays of clams iu l'J minutes.
The clams having disappeared, and there
being nothing else te cat visible tlic p ev
ident called the club te order an-1 directed
that the annual game should ;.i once be
commenced, for it was then 1 1 o'clock,
and as dinner was at 1, there was scarcely
time enough for each .side te have an in
ning. The presidr:!i had a few minutes
before tried te kick a ' ball w't'i his
eye, and was able only 1j take a ene sided
view of affairs. The ides were then
choesea as fellows :

The first nine wen the toss and took thu
field. Mr. Reland pitched the first ball se
skillfully as te take the umpire in the
eye. In his surprise the umpire forget te
call the ball, and it was net marked.
Then Capt. Herriet knocked a sky-scraper
te centre-field, which Rockwell, assisted
by Stewart, Allisen and Dussubury, clev
erly muffed. Pcndrceth went out ou
strikes, during which Herriet stele second
and Brcvoert went te the bat. On his
thirty-first strike he knocked the ball te
Otis, who neatly stepped it with the pit of
his stomach, and made a double play by
caroming en Nichols' eye and Mackayc's
ear. By the time Waring, en first base,
had caught tbe ball, Bravoert was home
having a private take with the umpire.
At 1:20 the last man was declared out by
the vampire, a'ld the sick, wounded and
dying were conveyed te the hospital en
stretchers where Surgeon Pike prescribed

Take every hall hour. II. 15. I".
The effect of this simple Seuth American
remedy was wonderful, and these blind in
one eye saw as if with two eyes 15 min
utes after taking it, the lame could smg,
and the deaf walk, nearly as well as be-
fore. The game was then resumed, the
first nine- going te the bat. Duriiy; this
inuing the umnirc, Justice Sanders, (lis
tiuguished himself. As an umnirc of
baseball he is without an equal iu the
country. It is no exaggeration te say that
he can umpire as well with his eyes shut
as open. It is impossible ler him te err.
In numerous cases yesterday when every
player and spectator thought they saw
clearly that a man was out, his eagle eye
detected that he wasn't, even when he
was apparently looking iu arethcr dircc
tien. Old baseball cxpei'i wept, with
emotion ever even the simplest of his ver
dicts, and when he decided that a ball
which struck a rooster wandering near
centre field was a fowl, they declared
that if he were employed at league games
he would make a sensation. During the
second iuning the only serious casualty
was the strikiug of a let of innocent clams
concealed about President Brcvoert by a
red-het ball from ex-Mayer OMs, who, in
the excitement of the moment, made a
home run. Surgeon Pike's infallible lotion
was immediately applied, and the presi
dent in a lew miuures recovered suihcicnt
ly te borrow $3 from the Rev. U: Mlisen,
who was unfortunately presets . "t 3:45
the game was declared at an c-id v ilh the
following score :
."l Sivr. -2i! Sine
Heme runs 4 c,i
Earned runs :ji4 ?);
Halls passed ijS7 2'"'U'i

This undoubtedly will h, ucl:!iewicri"ed
as the most remarkably ecvci iu:.de in
the country. Indeed, .,.; old critic pre
sent said that he !,: d seen the famous
Chicago Whifp '!:iugs in thnir best
days, but hadm-wi '..en them de any
thing which w.'i., compare with the
Yonkers club's performance. He then
asked President iirevoert if he had h
cigarette about his clothes, leek a dene of
burgeon rates mixture, sat down, and
was hysterical for a few minutes. It was
then noticed that some strange complaint
had seized upon every body present.
Their faces and hands were of a dark hue,
streaked in places and painfully mottled.
After a long examination Surgeon Pike
diagnosed the disease as either cyaDesis
or dirt. Te ascertain which, he ordered
tbe following lotion :
R.
A qui) heterum, gall. rex.
.Seap! Brewnuin, ft. iij.
Scrubbinbrushcrum. q. y.
Sig. Uf.e vigorously.
This was applied, and the malady was
found net te becyanesis. The club then ad
journed te dinner in the hotel. Proprietor
Hammend, while laboring under a fit of
tcmpeiary insanity, having contracted te
feed it. Fifteen minutes after the club
sat down he took in his sign.
The club prize was formally presented
by Judge Ellis te Mr. Mackaye, who made
13 borne runs. An attempt was made by
te show that Mr. Mackaye had 'fseen"
the umpire efteuer than any ether player,
bat was coughed down as unconstitution
al. The cup was of silver and exceed
ingly handsome. Addresses were' made
by President Brevoort, Surgeon Pike,
Chaplain Allisen, Rescoe C. Ethelberg
Belknap, Grand Caterer Read, Captain
Grindle, Edgar Yeuman, and by Vampire
and Refugee Sanders. Leiters of regret
and condolence were read from S. J. Til
den, Jehn Kelly, Cadet Whittaker, Capt.
Howgate and ethers, and the festivities
kept up until Mr. Hammend, tbe propri
etor, had succeeded in getting a squad of
police te assist him.
