BROSIUS' NOMINATION.
TUEY'KE STILL, TALKING AHOUT IT.
Current Cemment from the Public Press.
Philadelphia Times.
General McCreery Laving developed the
niacbine order of confession and avoidance,
Sir. Harriet Brosius came te the front as
poet laureate of the boss system. He was
eloquent as Mr. Brosius is always eloquent,
aud lie pleaded the cause of the speilsmen
with such captivating rhetoric, that the
boss dependents shouted him into the
couiricssienal nomination. He pointed te
the power of the state committee, under
the McCreery resolution, te perform any
duty, even te calling a state convention,
te attain peace and harmony, but the bub
ble was promptly pricked by Judge Jes
sup, who at once took the machine at the
word of its defenders, and proposed te ex
press the absolute right and possible duty
of the state committee te call a new con
vention, as fellows :
Ikselccd, That the state committee be
requested te take immediate action look
ing toward harmonizing the party in the
state, and, if necessary, te accomplish that
lesult, te call a new convention under the
new lttlcs, with full power te de whatever
may seem te be for the best interest of the
Kepiiblicau patty in the state.
The foregoing amended resolution pro
posed by Judge .Tcssup, simply expressing
wiiat the machine leaders had declared te
be a true interpretation of the McCreery
resolution, was greeted with such a howl
of dissent from the very men who had pre
viously declared that the McCreery reso
lution meant the same thing, that Judge
.Tcssup abandoned it as hopeless. True,
the chairman of the caucus (for the main
work of the convention was dene in cau
cus) declared that the McCreery resolution
authorized the committee te call a new
convention, but when the convention was
asked te say se in unambiguous terms,
the boss dependents yelled the prepusit ieu
out of the pale of discussion.
Thus did the clear-cut stamp of the
bosses impress itself upon the convention
and the faction of the party led by the
boss system, and the achievements of the
day fitly closed by the nomination Mr.
Marriet Brosius for ceugrcssinan-atlargc;
the man who had given eloquence and
dignity te the meusing metaphors of the
boss orators. Ne man could have been
presented te the people el the state mere
iudcllibly stamped with the title aud seal
of the boss aud spoils system, than is Mr.
Biesius, aud he will learn long befoie the
chill blasts of November come, that honest
deference te the honest will of honest
people would have given him garlands
mere worthy of himself, aud garlands
which would be fadeless and fragrant
when his ill-fitting bess-chaplcts shall
have withcicd in dishonor en his brew.
ISKOSiUS AS A IJOOIUKKANG.

ne Denounced the ' Suprrlatlve
Uurscs" el ItusMsm.
Albany Dispatch.
The Decoration day orator in this city
last month was Hen. Marriet Brosius,
nominated yesterday, by Cameren's con
vention for congressmau-at-large. His
address here was se bitterly anti-Stalwart
in tone that it was denounced next day by
the local Stalwart paper hi severe terms,
en the ground that the orator had no right
te attack the " machine" en an occasion
of pure commemoration. Speaking en
this topic Mr. Brosius said : " Iu this
country te-day factions, politics, pride
of power, ambition for supremacy,
and an insatiable selfishness, are
the superlative curses. Ambitious
men climb ever the ruins of their
country te the spoils of office, sel
fishness runs riot,factieu fueds dismember
the parties, principles arc forgotten iu the
struggle for place. Disregard of the obli
gations of patriotism arc se ranch in use
aud the dissensions of factions se fusnilar
that men who have long enjoyed the hon
ors and emoluments of ellice and leader
ship will smile as they hug the phantom
of their greatness, while they witness the
disintegration of the party that elevated
them te place, and whose machinery
enables them te held power against the
will of the people."
Chairman Cooper's attention was called
te the foregoing yesterday. He merely
said, after reading the pointed remarks of
Brosius, that theic was "nothing person
al" in them.
A STIUNG OF OPINIONS.
Tlie Olt! Candidate en the New.
"When the nomination of Brosius was
announced in Pittsburgh au interviewer
called en Tem Marshall, when that gift of
Providence remarked : " Cameren is giv
ing me tee many conundrums. The ether
day I had te guess who Cooper was. I
figured that out. 1 am going te give this
one ii."
" Will you vote for him ?"
" Vote for him ! Net I. I am tee geed
a Republican te vete for a man who has
received such an irregular nomination as
this man has. Brosius ! As Byren says :
' Phrebtis ! what a name
Te sound eternal threugii the trump et
lame' " ,
AJUI.ilit Candidate.
Philadelphia livening Telegraph.
Brosius, in Marshall's old clothes, will
be known during the campaign as the
" Misfit " candidate.
Candidate Brosius has made a fatal mis
take at the start. It is net the Kobubli Kebubli
can paity which has called him te the
front ; it is the Cameren party.
When se unexpectedly "called te the
front" Mr. Brosius seemed te be sadly
impressed with the idea tint he was te
play the part of chief mourner at his own
Itinera!. His ante-mortem statement is
very affecting.
As he is a very worthy citizen we hope,
however, that his apparent premonition
of death within a week or two may prove
unieuuded. It would be tee altogether
tee tee bad should Cameren be put te the
necessity of ordering Chairman Cooper te
call that couvcutien together again, for it
might happen that Chairman Cooper
would ceueludu that it was time te step
feeling and would refuse te call ; or, if
he did call, it might perchance happen
that net enough of the old crowd would
consent te autic before the public for
Camei en's supposed benefit te make what
even Chairman Cooper's crim-seu-hued
imagination would be equal te regarding
as a quorum.
Statesman Dre.slus.
Peltsvillc Chronicle.
"Will some Republican gentleman be
kind enough te rise and inform an expec
tant public who in thunder Mr. Marriet
Brosius, of Lancaster, is. We are very
sure nobody in this lcgieucvcr heard of
him before his name was announced as
the Republican nominee for cengressmau-at-largc.
He can't be a very great man,
or somebody would have thought of sug
gesting him for the place, ameug the
numerous distinguished gentleman named
for the position but nobody seems te
have thought of the euphonious name of
Brosius. "Brosius himself seemed te have
been taken as thunder took the toad,
when delegate after delegate rese in his
place and recorded his conviction that the
unknown here from Lancaster was the
man for the crisis,
B eaver en His New Colleague.
" I think the convention made an excel
lent selection. Mr. Brosius is in every way
worthy the position."
" Will net the fact that he is compara
tively unknown be an ebstacle in his
path ?"
"I think net. He may net be well
known in Western Pennsylvania, but in
the cast, and in his own county especially,
he is very popular. I am personally ac
quainted with him and knew him te be a
man of great ability."
" ilew de you think his nomination will
take with the Independents."
"Very well, I think. He will suit a geed
many of them' from the fact that he is
somewhat of an Independent himself."
Weakening a Desperate Cause.
New Yerk Tribune.
The name of Mr. Brosius will add no
strength te the ticket, and the manner of
his nomination will have no ether effect
than te weaken an already desperate
cause
In the meantime the Independents are
gaining strength. They have lest noth
ing by yesterday's work, and they have
probably gained something by it. Colonel
McMicbael, their candidate for cengress-man-at-largc,
gains by contrast with Mr.
Brosius, and is certain te be prefer: ed te
him by intelligent Republicans.
llerr Smith en His Successor.
Washington Dispatch te Pittsburgh Pest.
Hcrr Smith says that Brosius is a geed
man, a scholar aud a lawyer, and is about
forty years of age. Ed. McPhcrsen also
pays a tribute te him. He nominated
Judge Livingston iu the first tV.mcum
convention. Brosius, if elected, will be a
live candidate for the succession te Smith
in the Lancaster district. It is regarded
as a weak nomination, and the Stalwarts
regret that seme man iu Bayue's district
was net named.
Attorney Gen. Palmer of the Parden Jleaitl.
"Brosius is a cultivated and eloquent
gentleman. He gave efficient aid in
Governer Heyt's campaign and will make
friends for himself and his cause wherever
he gees. His nomination was au inspira
tien. It was net dreamed of thirty min
utes before the convention met, would
have been simply impossible in au old
fashioned convention and ought te satisfy
doubters that the convention of June 21
owned itself. There is a chance yet for
Israel te rejoice."
Everything That Is Levbly.
Philadelphia Bulletin.
In the prime of young manhood, bril
liant in his abilities, pure in his character,
bright in his reputation, stalwart in his
political independence and his political loy
alty, a gallant soldier of the Union, an
honor te his profession, Mr. Brosius is
evidently a man fitted by rare gifts te 10
prcscnt his party in his state aud te fill a
leader's 'jiace iu the Grand Army of True
Republicanism.
Jacobs Was I.clt.
Heading Herald.
Mr. Jacobs has fought much harder
than Mr. Brosius in the battles of the
party, and en these grounds was much
mere entitled te this place. Berks county
casts a very large Republican vote, and
unless the party is stiffened up pretty seen
the aggressive Independents will make
large inroads.
