WEDNESDAY EVENING, JUNE 21,1882.
TUB BALLAU OF THK UIKKU U1KL.
Fer the INTELLIGENCE!:.
She was a gentle hired girl.
Whose hair was rosy red,
With each hair strong enough te stand
Alene, all o'er her head.
Her nose was turned up in the air.
As If 'twere out el Joint,
And made, her haughty rivals said,
A 'terrogatten point,
She milked the cows one-half at eve.
And finished them at morn ;
While making bread she blew her nose,
At dinner time, the horn.
She washed all buttons off my clothes.
Ana soaked in starch my shirt,
In fact, did everything she could
Except take out the dirt.
My hats were always broken in.
My rubbers lull of dust.
My finest handkerchicls she used
Te help swell out her bu-d.
She always took my blacking-brush,
When polishing the stove,
And read the perfumed notes I get
Frem my dear lady love.
My hose were always wrong side In,
My breeches wrong side out;
My shoes she severed every pair.
Ami scattered them about.
My books went drifting lar and wide.
Like autumn's leaves are blown,
Anil when I get a thing she liked.
She made that thing her own.
She brushed her hair with my cloth-brush.
And en my coat would stick
The blank red hairs, my sweetheart would
Upbraiding therefrem pick,
The while she wept such bitter tears.
And said I'd laithlcss grown.
Fer I hail sworn no ether head
Should rest there but her own.
Ne use te vow ; she bid me go;
And said her love she'd smother.
Se, tearing 1, unloved, would die,
1 had te hunt another.
When sweet potatoes I most craved,
That girl cooked "early rose,"
And every time a turnip came.
She would turn up her nose.
I like my milk half cream, naif millc.
Cooled by a piece el ice,
Andle! theblucsklinniedinilk Mie brought
Had been a bath ler mice.
She used my manuscript te make
Friz-papers ler her hair;
And told the neighbors I get drunk.
And only lived te swear.
When I can read my title clear
Te mansions in the skies,"
She used te sing with se much force.
She'd almost lese her eyes.
Her face grew red a " Satan's rage,"
Her hair would brighter glow.
The "hellish darts" Hash from her eyes,
And word's ' wild deluge" flew.
At last it came, what long I'd, hoped,
She went an octave higher,
And grew se red, she was consumed.
By her own phtcnix-tircl

When Mr. Bret ILirte, new our consul
at Glasgow, visited the island of Iena a
few months since, he found, in the grave
yard el the ruined cathedral, the burial
place of nineteen sailors of the American
ship Guy Manncnng, which was wrecked
there in December, 1SC5. The spot where
tliny are interred, says Ir. Ilarte
in his report te the state department
" is marked by two rows of low granite
pediments at the head and feet of the dead,
supporting and connected by au iron
cbaiu, which encloses the whole space.
This was done by the order and at the ex
pense of the lord of the manor, the pres
ent Duke of Argyll. The locality is pic
turesque and historical. The graves of
the American seamen lie side by side with
the tombs and sculptured effigins of ancient
Scottish kings. A record of the names,
ages anil burial of these meu is kept by
the register of the district, but there is no
memorial upeu the stone enclosure. The
fact of their burial there and the story of
the generosity of the distinguished noble
men is learned only from the lips of hired
guides." The state department has direct
ed Mr. Ilarte te convey te the Duke of
Argyll the thanks of the president for his
generosity, and that a suitable stene bear
ing the names of the deceased is te be
erected by the government of the United
States ever the graves of these hapless
sailors.
