LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER TUESDAY JUNE 13, 18&. Fer THE TOBACCO MARKET. TRAMS IN SEED LEAF ASD HAVANA- the Week Ending Katarday, June 10, lO A.M. U. S. Tobacco Journal. We are happy te note a decided improve ment in the market. The inquiry for old and new goods was quite encouraging, and sales of old at least were roero numerous than for a long time past. Our remarks of last week, that the stock of leaf in manufacturers' hands is very small, and that even a slight increase in orders would force them into the market, are being borne out fast. Several of our large man ufacturcrs invested in '80 Pennsylvania this week ou meeting with offerings rea sonable in price, while several ethers are at prcseut in treaty with certain holders of such stock. The inquiry for fine 'e0 .New Yerk state and Wisconsin Havana seed was also quite satisfactory, and resulted in sales 01 ever 4UU cases. Ohie, tee, sela with a will, and only Connecticut did net share in the improvement, it selliug in very small quantities though by no meau s at reduced figures. These examining '81 tobacco by pack ers' samples find a a great deal of comfort iu the quality and yielding capacity of the stock, but much discomfort in the figures that are asked for it. The comparatively few holders of really choice '81 Pennsylva nia consider any suggestion of an offer at much less than 30 cents a decided pieee of impudence. With the apparent enor mous yield of the fine wrappers and the guarantce of but about 15 per cent. of fillers in 100-case lets, the prices asked don't seem cxherbitanr, but the Wisconsin and a portion of the New Yerk state crops show a mass of wrappers; and net alone can these two arewths be bought at lower fig ures, but they also show a silkiuessin tex ture and a maturity of color which may be termed absolutely perfect. Under these circumstances the supremacy of fine '81 Pennsylvania iu the market seems as yet problematic. Helders of it assert, that the fact of the present maturity of color in the Wisconsin and New Yerk state is a sign of approaching dangerous tcL-iimcies of the leaf. Helders of these tobaccos smile at the assertion and claim tnat the alleged fiue Pennsylvania is ' wooden " in texluie and color, which is a sure sign of approaching h. 'leiung, preventing tbe leaf from swen nig successfully. The allegations of both sides ceitaiuly have some foundation, but this much is a dead certainty that whoever can exhibit a per fect packing of leaf, be it Pennsylvania, Wisconsin or New Yerk state, may be sure of a profitable sale in the net distant future The '81 Connecticut is, as far as can be judged new, net quite t satisfactory as bust year's crop. Nevcrt' jless, it will sell. The prices paid have net increased. Tbe crop is net much large than in form er years., and the people that cling te Con necticut don't seem te die out. Slew and slim as its sale has been for raauy years past, it has always found its way out of the market with mere or less profit te its patrons. The '81 Ohie will again prove a splendid article t-. the manufacturers of cheap cigais. It is fieshy and cheap. Pe'insylvania. Seed Leaf A week of summer entered into aud the effect felt, and yet se far as packets aud dcaleis aie concerned they repeit very favorable business for while it may bccensideied dull, still the daily trade of each house far execeds their ex pectations. As a result, old lpaf is moving off rapidly at full valuation ; se much se, that holders of new stock of all grades begin te feel hopeful and encouraged, be cause there is new strong probabilities of a demand iu the fall for new leaf at a decided margin. New Pennsylvania and Wisconsin is looming up nicely ; it is be yond doubt better goods than anticipated, and must yield a fair return. Cans' Weekly Kcnert. Sale of seed leaf tobacco reported by .1. .1. Gans' Seu & Ce., tobacco brokers, Ne. 131 Water street, New Yerk, for the week ending June 12, 1882. 800 cases 1880 Pennsylvania, C30e. ; 100 cases 1880 New England, wrappers, l5f;30. ; 100 cases 1880 Wisconsin, Ha vana seed, p. t. ; 200 cases 1880, Ohie, 4i10c. 109 cases, sundries, 9(u)18c. ; Total, 1,300 cases. The Lecal Tobacco Market. There has been scarcely a ripple in the local market for a week past. A few small lets of old leaf have been sold en private terms, and a few crops of new have been picked up bjr packers. Indeed, notwithstanding all the bears have been saying about the large quantities of loose leaf yet iu the hands of farmers it is evi dent that the crop of 1S81 has been pretty closely bought up, and these who want mere of it have te search dilligcntlly be fore they find it. The fine weather that has prevailed for a fewdiys past has beci. taken advantage of by the larmers te set th. young -plants, and although these as a m.i. are small, very many thousands of them have been planted, and the planting will continue as rapidly as possible It is tee early yet te make an estimate e( the acicage of the coming crop, but it will doubtless be as large if net larger than ever before, in this county, the centre of tobacco culture, while the cultivation of the leaf will con tinue te spread as it has for a few years been .spreading te ether counties that have grown but little or none of it. m m m Thai peer bedridden, invalid -wife, sister mother, or daughter, can he made the picture of health hy a few bottler of Hep ISitters.
