On Friday afteruW Mr. Jehn Eckert,
the well-known sportsman, met vrith an
accident at tbe Oxi erd fair races tb.it came
nigh terminating in bis deatb, and which
may yet. Mr. Eckert bad bet ea tbe Ken
nedy horse which was en the track at tbe
time. As the boise was coming around
the coarse, he stepped out upon the track
with a whip iu his hand te urge it en and
in less time than it takes te write he was
struck in the back by a borse follow
ing aud thrown about forty feet ferwaid,
tailing en his face, sustaining serious in
juries. When picked up be was uncon
scious. Medical aid was at once sum
moned and it was feuud that, besides
being badly cut about the head, he was
injured inwardly, and his case was pro
nounced doubtful. His friends tele
graphed te have biui sent home, and he
was at ouce placed iu the cars ; whey they
arrived at Christiana, he was reported te
be in a dying condition, but he rallied later
aud at. time of writing he is en en a fair
read te recovery, although be is net
able te be removed from Cbristiaua le bis
home yet-
On the same day Richard Ellsweitb, a
fourteen-year-old son of Richard Max
well, made a hair-breadth escape from
being killed. lie was the rider of Win
field Kennedy's horse at the Oxfeid races,
and as he was going aieund the ceuise
the jsaddlc-girth broke, tbiewing him
under the horse, which was going at a
rapid rate, and two or three ether horses
following passed ever him, but happily he
escaped witli but low injuries. Dick is
one of our boys, and we are of tbe opinion
that this is the last time he will ever act
as rider at a borse tacc.
On Friday morning Mrs. Mary McClel
lan, wife of Thompson McClellan, tesid
ing near Christiana, Sadsbury township,
died very suddenly from the effects of a
paralytic stroke Ou the evening previ
ous te her deatb she piepareti supper for
a number of workmen, ate a hearty meal
and letired about nine o'clock in the even
ing. At au early hour the next morning
she aroused her husband and complained
of feeling very sick. Tbe family physician
was at ouce summoned, but despite all
efforts te remedy her, she expired about

James ML .Walker, the candidate for
assembly Ter the southern district, (accord
ing te his 'family biography ia n descendant
of the Bbcth generation of Lewis Walker,
one of the early settlers of Chester county,
who -had emigrated irem Wales and about
the year 1700 put chased from Win. Pcun

family, he is a descendant of 'the beventh
generation of Nicholas Newliu, who was a

As the season advances the suakc stories
ceme thicker and taster, and we can hardly
give credit te them all ; and if we should
we are afraid our veracity as a correspon
dent would fall somewhat short. There is
undoubtedly a large snake crop this year,
from all accounts. Twe large black snakes
were killed recently en the farm of Isaac
Walker, ihe huge reptiles each each
measured A feet in length and about tcu
inches in circumference ; a large black
snake of the " racer " species was killed
by G. N. Wetst, it measured ,1 feet iu
length, and Geerge Pewnall killed a
copperhead snake last week that measured
three feet aud four inches in length.
On Saturday evening the citizens of the
Gap had the pleasure of witnessing a
genuine pugilistie exhibition, iu which
three young bleeds participated. After
fighting like Crusadeis, and a general
ileurish of revolvers, net trumpets, the
battle was declared indecisive, and Wed
nesday evening was then appointed when
the brave knights will again leassciubled
and fight the battles of old o'er again. By
all means Constable Bewman should be
en hand and take the boys iu custody for
disturbing the peace of tbe neighborhood,
besides doing dishonor te the btavc knights
of old.
The portable saw mills of U.S. Slirack
& Ce. are still in full blast in Z. B. Will
iams' weeds in Sadsbury township. Tbe
weed is comprised of ever forty acres and
it is stated that by the middle of July the
vast amount will be felled, sawed up in
different shapes and shipped. On Satur
day they sold at public talc yO.000 feet of
white oak lumber yi the shape of beards,
planks and scantlitigs. Wm. P. Linville
is rapidly felling six or seven acres of
timber en the Gap hills which he pur
chased recently.
On Wednesday, the 7th hist., Mrs. Car
eline Portner, motuer of the late Edward
Pertner,dicd at her residence in Bclicvnc,
from the effects of pneumonia, m the 78th
year of her age. Interment took place en
Friday in Bellcvuejccraetery.
Jehn Grant has finished everything iu
the way of grading a temporary roadbed
at the gap, and having no mere work en
hand there he and all his workmen, with
their teams, left for West Chester last
week.
Samuel Grccnlief is creeling a new bain
en his premises ; Christ Fex's new house
at the Gap is about being completed,
and Henry Fex has bad his dwelling en
larged. It is stated upon geed anthenty that
there will be a much larger Independent
vote polled in this township this fall for
governor than there was for state treasurer
last fall.
W. H. Swcigart'a brand of phosphate is
showing very fine results in this township
already, as rcpui led by parties who have
used it ou spring crops.
The citizens of Christian?, propose pur
chasing a new hand f'uc engine and
several hundred feet of hose at an early
date.
The greater pait of our farmcis a:e new
engaged iu planting tobacco. A consider
able amount of patent manures arc being
used.
Dr. Sanders has anived from St. Leuis,
Me., and is new sojourning at his fiue res
idence at Sanders Ilcights.
Rebert Knox sold another of his fast
trotting horses last week te W. P. Linville
for near $200.
Miss Lida ITilten has been appointed
teacher of Mt. Airy school.

On Saturday neon the Mount Jey
school beaid held a special meet
ing le elect teaches -s for the borough
schools for the ensuing term of eight
months. There are six schools and seven
teachers are employed te instruct the
pupils. Because of an anticipated change
of instructors the meeting was looked for
waid te with special interest. Beferethe
meeting it was known that one jOt the
members intended te hand in bis resigna
tion. This had a tendency te heighten
the interest, as the acceptation of tbe
resignation was involved in doubt. It was
net accepted, se four out of of tbe live
votes were necessary te elect a teacher. In
consequence of this new turn of affairs
two of the positions are yet vacant, the
principalship and the fourth Drimarv. A.
number of ballets were taken, but a special

designated, is necessary te fill the vacan
cies. Follering are the ones appointed :
Assistant in tbe high schoe', Miss Mary E.

At the examination of teachers en last
Friday there were fourteen candidates for
certificates. Four failed.

The root plow works are pushed with
orders. They are new running twelve

operation, but only some of the machinery

Samuel Clair, of Middlelewn, wes visit
ing his parents of this place en Sunday.
Thirty pupils will be shortly admitted
te the orphans' school at this place.
It is new expected that all the injured
of the church disaster will recover. The
building has been raised.
The prospects for a large excursion te
Mount Alte, en Wednesday, are geed.
There will net be an examination of
teachets at Maylewn, en July 19, as an
nounced. The schools will be given out
next Saturday.
David Mooney has fitted up an ice cream
saloon en West Maiu street.

Ress Howe, son of Mr. C. Howe, retired
merchant of this place, is home from
Princeton college for a few days. He
brought with him a number of finely exc-1
cnted photos et his college associates.
Sunday Scheel Concert.
A Sunday school concert exercise about
r.iin, flowers, birds and fruits was held
in the M. E. church ou Sunday forenoon
and evening by tbe children. At 10 o'clock
when the exercises were announced te
commence, the spacious church was com
pletely packed. Te the visitor as he en
tered the church, the scene was one of
great beauty ; wherever the eye fell it was
greeted with tasteful aud handsome deco
rations upon the pulpit, aud at either end
were arranged choice flewcis ; beneath au
arch, iu the centre of the pulpit, was a
pyramid of beautiful lilies ; suspended
from the arch yvcte two cages of warblers,
and at the windows en cither side the same,
beautiful sengstri.s keeping up a continu
ous song throughout the entire ex?rcise.
In part first "Rain" classes Nes. 1,
2 and 8 answered questions put te them
by the superintendent ; quartet by the
school, followed by classes $bs. 4 and 5 ;
anthem. "Like showers upon the mown
grass," by tbe choir ; followed by class
Ne. G. Recitation Ne. 1, "April Rain,"
by thrce little gitls beneath an umbrella.
Part Second "Flowers" class Ne. 7,
8, 9, answering questions in regard te
them given by the superintendent, fol
lowed by the anthem, "Consider the
Lilies." Recitation Ne. 2, by a little
girl, holding in her hand a beautiful lily,
after which came dialogue Ne. 3, entitled
"Use of FIeweis"by two small girls,
followed by questions, answered by
classes Ne. 11 aud 12. Singing by the
school, folleffiug which the pastor ad
dressed the assembled hcaicrs upon the
01 fain of Sunday schools.
The evening exercises were conducted J
by Rev. Powell.

Israel Tenuis, one of our fine old rep
resentative Quakers, died at his residence
near Fait field, last Friday, in the 82d year
of his age. Deceased was widely known
aud whdevcr knewu lespec'ed for his
gcnial.ty and solid worth, no worked
some iu the harvest field last summer,
being remarkable iu endurance, consider
ing his advanced age. lie was a devotee
of equestrianism, and lode his trusty "old
black Bill " till a few weeks age when he
was taken out of the saddle by sickness.
His funcial, Sunday afternoon, was largely
attended.
Levi Wilheur another of our eldest
men, died last week, aged 70.
Tobacco plant stealing is being practiced
in the neighborhood of Liberty Square.
James Drcnnen holds a Sunday school
in his barn every Sunday afternoon.
Dwellings are being built by Parker B.
Shank and David Weidlcy, and a tobacco
house by McSparrau & Ce., iu Fairfield.
Cern is but shoe-top high, where it
should be knee high.
