An Abundant Apple Crep.
Ceuntrj JGcntleman.
During a recent ride through a large
portion of tbe fetate, we could net fail te be
struck with the enormous masses of apple
blossoms wheiecr there weie trees. The
premise is of a great crop and vast surplus.
Many thousand bushels will be wasted if
the fruit ripcn3 as well as in ether seasons,
unless efficient efforts are made te secure
a foreign market, and te manufacture
large quantities at home into evaporated
fruit, or into apple jelly or vinegar.
It is te be hoped that the supplies which
arc scut te Luiope will be selected and put
up in a manner ci editable te the fiuit fiuit
greweir, of this country, and that some
means ra.vy be devised te distinguish such
grewcis and snippets as de the work In
honorable and skillful manner, fiem these
who by carelessness and fraud de a lasting
injury te themselves and ethers, as was
tee frequently the case in 18S0.
A question of importance is asked many
times in Ibis connection, "Hew can we
pievcnt this uneven bearing in alternate
years, se as te Lava a fair .supply cvciy
bcasenV" In answer, thcie ate three
lemcdick. Une is te cultivate the gieuud
well se a-, te keep up the vigor of the trees
te such a uegjee that Ilia abundant ci op
the even year will net exhaust the ticcs
aud prevent bearing the eJd year. This
remedy, although operating mere or less
in all cases, is, iinceitaiu or incomplete.
The second, manuring the tiecs at the
rigrn, time, is mero eibciene. The best
tine te apply the niamtre which must of

nure, and is well weith trying by these
who have facilities for this pmpesc. The
tliiid, aud most ccitaiu way of changing
the bearing year, is te prevent a crop this
season, by which all the sticngth of the
giewth will be thrown iute tlie young
sheets for a crop nevt year. The
best time is when the trees aie
in blossom, because they are easily
h.een ; and thc best tool for the pur
pose is a pair of common sheep shcais.
The weik bheuld be dene when the trccs
are young, for two icasens the labor is
much less, and the change is moie likely
te be pcimaueut. We find that it requites
a man three hours te shear off all the
blossoms fiem a tuc fifteen jeais old
and laige enough te bear twelve bushels
aud only ene hour for a young bearing
tiee i reven or right ycaiseld. The value
of the ei op en cither, dining a scarce
year, is much meic than the cost of the
labei. The weik may be dene when the
euiig apples aie as large as eheriies, but
they aie net se easily seen as thc blos bles
