Tlie flouring mills of Henry Redee, the
largest in Northern New Yerk, were
burned Monday nigbt. The less ameiiuts
te $75,000 ; insurance, S43,000.
Ferdinand Janvier, of Newcastle county,
Del., a well-known farmer, was murder
ously attacked by William Cress, a negre
farm band, who was dissatisfied with a
settlement of accounts. The negre was
arrested while mercilessly beating his
fallen victim with a club. Janvier is
severely though net fatally hurt.
The steamer Evausvilie, while discharg
ing freight at Calhoun, Ky., collapsed one
ef"hcr larboard Hues, scalding eight or ten
men, four of them badly. Engineer
Baker, the mate, three negrees and two
hogsheads of tobacco wcie blown from
amidships into the river. The line by
which tlie beat was made fast parted, and
the beat drifted 150 yards down the river
and took lire, but j the- flames were easily
extinguished, and the beat made fast te
the shore. Sue is new entirely helpless.
The two firemen and the ash-puller were
injutcd fatally.

Ex Senater Wallace says: ,:As the

is ultra-Republicau and has net the
slightest particle of sympathy with the
Democrats, and they should have uone

.Senater Stcwais will open the Indepen
dent carapaigu in Pittsburgh en Tuesday
next, the 13th inst. It is expected that
Cel. Wra. McMichael, the candidate for
ceugicssman-at-large will also speak at
the Pittsburgh meeting, and as it is Cel.
Duff's home, he will doubtless be heaid

Ex-Atterucy General Lear, who presided
ever the late Ilarrisburg convention, his
seut a letter te Chairman Cooper concern

terms of this letter cannot .be mistaken.
Mr. Lear emphatically expresses his disap

been made. When Heaver was named for
governor, Davies for lieutenant governor
and Rawle for the supreme court, some

nominate him.'

Lincoln institute, which has for its object
the cducat'en of colored men, were held in
Livingstone hall ycsteiday. Rev. Jeseph
S. Tompson, a coleicd minister fieni Phil
adelphia, opened the exercises by prayer.
Addresses were made by Themas II. Rob
erts, a native African belonging te the
Vey tiibe ; Jehn W. Fieeman, of New
Jeiscy ; Henry B. Wilnen, of Georgia ;
S. S. Sevier, a native- African of the Bassa
tribe; and James W. Wilsen, a native
African of the. Conge tribe. At the con
clusion of the addresses Rev. Dr. J. N.
Rcndall, president of the faculty, confer
red the degree of bachelor of aits upon
Themas II. Roberts, Jehn W. Fieeman.
Henry B. Wilsen, S. S. Sevier. Jacob B.
Blake, James W. Wilsen, S. P. Shepherd,
Alenzo Miller, W. II. Lee, Rebert A. Ma
honey, and Yerkc Jenes, who graduated
fiem the institute. The valedictory was
given by Yerko Jenes, of Media, who
chose for his subject, "Is the Negro
Cursed?''
After an intermission of an hour at neon
the exercises of the theological depart
ment were held.. David E. Small, of
Yerk, opened with prayer. Addicsscswcrc
made by Jehn R. Harris, of North Care
lina; Alexander K. Wilsen and v. 11.
Dickersen. The master's oration was
given by Jehn A. Savage, of Liberia. The
degree of bachelor of sacred theology was
then conferred upon J. R. Harris, North
Carolina ; P. J. Bacen, Georgia; W. H.
Dickersen, New Jersey ; J. A. Savage,
Liberia, and A. R. Wilsen, Georgia. The
degree of master of arts was conferred
upon G. M. Harris, Virginia ; J. A. Jami Jami
eon, Pennsylvania ; Edward Moere, North
Carolina ; J. T. Nesselc, New Yerk ; J. C.
Pierce, North Carolina ; J A. Savage,
Liberia, and A. R. Wilsen, Georgia. The
degice of doctor of divinity was conferred
upon J. C. Waters.
The last essay was dciiveied by Rev.
Moses A. Hepkius, of North Caieliua.
Rev. W. R. Bingham, of Oxford, Mr.
Davenport, of Erie, and the president of
the beard of trustees made brief ad
dresses. General James A. Beaver, the
regular Republican candidate for gover
nor, was thea introduced te the audience.
He was received with a storm of applause.
He said that, Lincoln institute was a world
in itself, whose atmosphere was se quiet
and hallowed that it was a benediction te
all who came beneath its teachings. It did
net confine its influence te itself, but sent
out emissaries te all parts of the country,
te gladden all.

is here in force and its members and their
families, te the number of about 200, are
quartered at the Metropolitan and National
hotels. The entire party weic taken te

Vernen. It was proposed te held a lccep lccep
tien at Mr. Cameren's house, but the ob
jection was made that it miht be given a
political complexion at home and the pro
ject was abandoned. Senater Mitchell was

The portion of the report of the com cem com
mittee en the theological seminary relating
te the separate incorporation of that in-i
stitutien was considered. Remarks upon
the subject were made by Rev Dr. u.
M. Shumucker, M. L. Kehler, Rev. Dr.
W. J. Mann, Rev. F. J. F. Schantz, and
Rev. Dr. J. A. Sciss, after which the re
commendation of the committee that
there should be no separate incorporation
of the seminary was agreed te. The report
of the committee en the division of the
synod was held under debate, Rev. G. A.
Uentcnlcitner advising that both the words
'German" and "English" should be
dropped, and giving it the name of "The
synod of Pennsylvania and adjacent
states." The resolution was adopted after
being amcuded se as te read that the full
right of both languages shall be recegnizee?,
se that every minister and lay delegate,
whether German or English, shall have
the right te use both languages en the
fleer of the synod.
