Steamer Iicvis oft he Day.
Tlie steamer R. R. Springer, of the
New Orleans and Cincinnati line, went up
the Mississippi river en Saturday with 260
students of Nelsen's business school of
both sexes, mostly persons of nearly ma
ture years, en a picnic te Parker's ijreve,
about fourteen miles up the Ohie river.
The steamer, returning, arrived near the
Newport railroad bridge at seven o'clock.
The river is nearly lerty lect men ana a
strong wind was blowing. The steamer
had te lower her chimneys te get under
the biidgc. Captain Ilart was at the
wheel. There was some delay in lowering
the chimneys en accountef imperfect work
ing machinery. The strong wind from the
north struck the beat, which was high en
the water en account of a light lead. The
captain saw the beat was drifting se as te
strike the edge of the bridge pier amid
sliip. lie saw' at a glance the peril of the
position. It was tee Utc 10 back against
a strong current and a powerful gale, lie
ordered en all the stean possible and
dashed ahead. The starboard side of the
.steamer struck the pier. All the passen
geis who were en the upper deck were
jostled and many thrown en their faces.
The passengers rushed pell-mell te the
boiler deck and huddled together. The
steamer grazed the pier, crushing her
.smith shop, barber shop, mess house,
wheel house and wheel. A signal of dis
tie.ss was thrown out. The beat floated
helplessly down the stream and struck the
coal barges rnoeicd below, wrecking one
se that the coal was thrown into the river
te save the barge. The passengers all
scrambled off, en te the coal fleet without
injury except in tern clothing, scratched
hands and faces and slight bruises te some
of them. There was a panic at the mo
ment, but no one jumped overboard. The
liraa between striking the pier and collid
ing with the coal fleet was very brief,
which was a fet lunate circumstance. It
was a very nariew escape from a frightful
casualty. Twe seconds hesitation of the
captain at the wheel would have been
equivalent te cutting the beat in two and
losing the lives of nearly all onboard.

Ladies' summer underwear ;
cotton, merino, lisle, cotton-and-silk,
silk.
Apart from all consideration
of prices, we have advantage in
the largeness of our trade which
it is worth your while te 'knew
about. And this is it. We can
keep what few want. In under
wear, this advantage shows in
uncommon sizes, and in many
sorts, when few would de. A lady,
very large or very small, is cer
tain te find what she wants here.
That, of itself, is enough te bring
multitudes here.
Our stock of ladies' vests is
new as follews:
Gauze cotton, S3, CO, S7, .'.0 ami . j cents.
Gossamer cotton, a little heavier than gauze,

By the middle of June the lace
trade of the mere exclusive
stores is ever and their stocks
0 down. Indeed se general is
the fact that even wholesale
slecks go down. There is a lull
in tiie whole trade from lunc te
September.
We cannot take such a vaca
tion. Our trade has no dull
tune. We try te keep as lull a
stock in summer as at ether
times, and in the main we de.
When we fail it will be because
the wholesale- supply and our
own importations both arc short.
We shall fail mere or less, be
cause it is often impossible te
get laces promptly in summer.
But of all the places we knew,
the fullest market is here, sum
