the
Question or Resuming.
Cuicage, June 3. The situation at
Irendale is practically unchanged this
morning. The men will held a secret
meeting this afternoon te take action
upon a telegram alleged te have been re
ceived from President Jarrett, advising
the men te use their own judgment as te
whether they stay cut any longer or net.
There is a strong feeling here that It
be advisible te continue work until the
15th or while the committee at Pittsburgh
is cenlernng with the manufacturers.
Seme of the men are loud in their de
nunciation of President Jarrett, claiming
that he should net consent that the men
should de anything different from what is
doue at Pittsburgh. Leading men among
the ironworkers express great cenGdence
in Jarrett, however.
There will probably be a split among the
iron workers ever the question whether te
go te work Monday until pending the ar
bitration or whether te stiek out until
Pittsburgh signs the scale. Te day is semi
monthly pay-day at the mills. The men
areall quiet and orderly. Between $20,000
and $30,000 is being disbursed te the men.

Discussing the Alabama Contested Kloctiea
In the Heuse.
Washington, Juue 3. Immediately
after the reading of the journal the Heuse
took up the consideration of the Alabama
contested election case of Lewe vs.
Wheeler, Mr. Wheeler being accorded the
fleer te clese the argument in his own be
half, lie reviewed the law and the
facts in the case and deduced there
from the conclusion that he had
been fairly and honestly elected as a
member of the feurty-seventh Cengress.IIe
then yielded te Mr. Springer, of Illinois,
who contended that if Lewo were te be,
seated it would be upon tissue ballets, and
gave notice that he would offer a resolu
tion recommending the case and instruct
ing the committee te ascertain the num
ber of tissue ballets cast for either party,
and te report who was elected after
rejecting all such ballets. It was
a serious matter for honorable gen
tlemeu voting te seat a man upon
tissue ballets which could be read as wcli
en one side as the ether.
Mr. Calkins (Ind.), stated that though
he bad carefully examined the case he had
for the first time heard te-day of tissue
ballets. They had net been mentioned in
the pleadings or the arguments before tbe
committee en elections.
Mr. Burrows then spoke in support of
the claims af Lewe aud criticized the ac
tion of the Democrats in resisting the
right of the IIouse te judge of the elec
tion of its own members.
Mr. Hazelton demanded the previous
question, pending, which Mr. Springer
moved te recommit aud placed the motion
in the form of a resolution and preamble
setting forth that a number of depositions
offered by the contestant were never certi
fied aud that some of the depositions had
been changed since the examination.
Mr. Reed made the point of order that
the preamble was merely a speech and
could net properly be incorporated in a
motion te recommit.
After some discussion the speaker ruled
that the resolution was net in order. Mr.
Springer appealed from the decision, but
the appeal.was laid ou the table.
Mr. Springer then moved te rccemmic
