LANCASTER DAILY lTQmiJWJSDAY JUNE 1, 1882. ftmcastrr fntelligeiucc. THURSDAY EVENING, JUNE 1, 1882. Farm Laber. (erniauteu-n Telegraph. It has been observed iii connection with the distribution of the enormous numbers of foreign emigrants arriving daily at New Yerk from Europe, that the commission ers of emigration in that city receive mere applications for labor than they can pos sibly supply, and that these applications are in a large number of cases accompanied by drafts or money te pay the expenses of the laborers te distant points in the in terior, where they are te be employed at geed wages and provided with comfort cemfort comfert ablo living. This state of things shows the great deflcieucy of labor in the agri cultural district of most parts of the Middle and Western states, but especially in the West. The native population which .supplies by far the vast majority of farm settlers of the West includes but a very small number of laborers for daily wages. The consequence is that the great majority el these small farmers iu the new states and territories in the West have mere land than they can cultivate by their own labor, and can very well afford te give geed wages and steady employment te foreign cmigants, by whose help they can easily raise profitable crops and abun dant livestock,, from the sale of which they would have drain of the native population by the domestic emigration te the West and Seuth, this influence is gradually but surely causing a great change in the char acter of the population of a large surplus left in cash after paying all expenses. In consequence of this condition of things, the foreign laborers arriving in New Yerk in search ei employment are sent oil" by railroad te thn interior without delay, and thus there is no accumulation in New Yerk. The state of Misseui i appears te be undergoing a mighty chauge in its social and political character, in conse quence of the prodigious influx of foreign labor, especially in the rural districts ; and by the same process Iowa, Minnesota, Da kota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Colerado arc increasing in population and devalop devalep ment with giant strides. This European farm labor brings with it a knowledge of many things connected with agriculture in the Old World that are found serviceable by the young farmers and iudc settlers of the West, and alto gether is said te be infinitely preferable te the coleicl laborers from the Southern plantations, who were induced te emigrate te Kansas a year or two age iu order te" supply the great deficiency of farm labor iu that state. They come from all parts of the British Isles and continental Europe, especially Germany, Italy, Austria, Swe den and Norway. They generally report that times are very bad in "Europe with the working classes of the popula tion. It is somewhat singular that the old -states of New England draw very heavily upon jew 1 erk for supplies of all kinds of labor, both in agriculture and manufactures. By this process, takcn in connection with the long continued and steady improvement i:i these states, it is highly probable that fiis influence may revive the droop ing I'ei tunes of New England agriculture, and wake plentiful crops te grew en what have long been neglected wildernesses and waste-places. 'I here is an abundance of room also iu Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland for an improve ment of the same sort, and we are glad te believe that the opportunity has net been overlooked. Iu Seuth Jersey alone there aic still immense wildernesses wholly uu cultivated, notwithstanding all the efforts of railway companies, capitalists and real estate operators te plant settlements in the forest tracts, where crops might be raised for the markets of Philadelphia and New Yerk. There is room there for a million people te earn a comfortable living and that will inevitably be found there before the close of the present ceutury. Agriculture is the chief reliance of every country, and especially has it proved of. great value te ours. i -x old lady writes us: "I am c". years old una va- feeble and nervous allt'.ie time, when I bought a bottle et Parker's Ginger Tonic.
