Janll-lvd&w The planting season having passed, there are many requisites for geed management of the frnit and vegetable garden, in which success depends much en timely attention. Newly transplanted trees are often neg- lectcu te tueir uccrnnenc alter they have been well set out. Sometimes the tops have been left tee large for the shortened roots, and the wind whips them about, making a round hele iu the soil about the stems, working the roots loose and drying the titles. It is tee late te reduce the tops after the leaves have opened, but the trees may be saved by timely attention first removing the upper soil, filling in mellow earth and treading it compactly, and then staking the trees against the wind. An in clined hole may be made with a crowbar a feet or se from the tree, a stake driven in firmly, and a straw whisp tied around the stake and the tree. Anether aud mero common injury te newly set trees, is te leave the soil te become hard and crusted about them, net only retard ing their growth, but rendering them mare liable te harm from summer dreuths. all of which is easily avoided by keeping the surface of the ground clean and mel- low for several feet distance about the trees. Grafts set early in spring should net be injured by sheets and suckers springing up from the stock about them. As seen as the graft shows that it is alive, rub off all these sprouts or sheets. If the grafts should happen te die, leave the strongest sheet te grew for regrafting, and rub off all the rest. The same attention must be given te buds which were inserted last summer and the stocks cut off this spring. Raspberry suckers, if numerous, crowd aud i educe the strength of the few te be left for next year's bearinjr. Thev should therefore be cut off with a sharp hoe as seen as they made their appearance above ground, leaving only a few of the strong est te crew up for next year's crop in ether words, treated precisely as weeds. The new canes will seen be two or three feet high, when the tops should be pinched elf, and afterwards the side branches, as they appear, pinched back far enough te make a handsome, self supporting bush. The same treatment all through is te be given te blackberries. Grapevines, pruned at the proper time. will send out tee many new sheets, which would grew and make a thick mass of branches and foliage. Rub off liinelv all the needless sheets, leaving the btrengest ones equally distributed aleug the vine, at distances of from eight te twelve inches. Cultivation of orchards, especially of young ones, is an essential aid te their giewth, but care must be taken net te break any of the roots after the leaves have opened and growth has commenced, unless it may be that the trees possess un usual vigor, in which case the slight check given by a slight mutilation of the roots may net de harm. If ndbessary te give a new plowing te orchards, which will break some of the roots, it should be done be fore growth begins. In cultivating the ground, te keep the surface clean through the summer, use such a harrow a8 will net catch and tear out roots! but which will ride smoothly ever them such as the disc and acme harrows. I The curculie should lie taken in baud when the young fruit of the plum is net larger than small peas, or as seen as the first crescent marks are seen. If the in sects become abundant,' the trees should be examined twice a day ; commonly once a day is often enough. An iron plug te strike en, for jarring down the curculies, should be inserted into the trunk ; or if the trce is large, into the principal limbs. This sharp jar ou the iron brings them all down at one blew. The padded mallet is inefficient, aud often fails iu the hands of these who use it. Black-knot en the plum destroys many trees, while an efficient remedy is of easy application. It consists simply in cutting out (aud burning) all the black knots as seen as they make their appearance The work should be freely done, taking as much of the weed with the knots as will secure all the diseased Darts. If left till the disease extends through the tree the cure is mero difficult, aud if deferred still longer the tree will net recover. A recent writer en this disease recommends de ferring the excision till the leaves have fallen in autumn, in order that the black excrescences may be easily seen. This delay may answer In summer, but we have always preferred te iake :them off within a week of their first coming out. With this prompt care the work is slight and the cure certain. Shaping young trees may be easily effect ed if taken iu time, by summer pruning and pinching. A needless or misplaced sheet, which might become a conspicuous distortion if left te grew, is tubbed off with the thumb when an inch or two long. Branches which are runnimr out tee lensr are stepped by pinching off the ends. By these means a handsome and symmetrical head is easily given te a young tree, if taken in time. Weeds should never be permitted te get an ineh high. Ge ever' the garden beds with a steel rake as often as once a week. The labor will be mero than repaid by the increased growth of the crop and the weeds will never make their appearance. The labor will be far less than is required te clear out weeds after they have grown several inches, and have checked and partly spoiled the crop. ' Thinning the fruit, when it is quite small, en apple, peach or pear trees, will give better fruit and enough larger te afford as many bushels as can be had from small ovorcrewded trees. Ou heavily leaded trees from two-thirds te three-fourths of the fruit may be taken off te great ad vantage. The thinning may be performed by cutting off the blossoms with a pair of sheep shears ; or after the fruit is set and is as large as small cherries, or still larger, se as te show defects or insect marks ; leaving the largest and best. Bearing the off year may be effected by shearing off all the apple blossoms or small fruit ou young trees likely te be overloaded this abundant vear. The work is comparatively easy en young trees, which as yet have small crops and are mero accessible, and it is mero likely te produce a permanent change than an old trce with fixed habit. Evergreens may be set out later than many ether trees, because they usually begin growth later. If the young sheets have net grown mere than an inch or se they will succeed well, provided the essen tial requisite is observed, of carrying plenty of soil en the roots. Mulching may be applied te such young trees as cannot be cultivated with a horse. A few inches of old straw, cut glass, long manure or sawdust, spread iu a circle about newly set trees, will keep the ground moist, smother grass and weeds, ami prevent injury ey dreutli ana net sun. It is especially useful te young cherry ttces. Planting Trees trem Peer Ground. It is net uncommon te find write s en tree-culture recommend trees from peer ground in preference te trees from rich soil, in transplanting. A tree stimulated by strong manure is said te make a rapid, plethoric growth, resulting in its death the first severe winter : while a tree grown en soil of moderate fertility without manure, is the one the wise tree-planter should cheese. There is no greater mis take than this doctrine, as everv extensive planter with experience in both cases can testify. Seme trees die from being badly grown, that is te say, from having been raised by persons who de net knew hew numerous roots are te be produced by art when nature denies them te the tree, she has no notion herself is te be seme time or .auuiucr irauspiauiea. it is an art only a small portion of tree growers understand. Other trees die from being badly dug, ethers from being badly shipped, aud very many from being ' planted with very great care " by people who have net the slightest idea as te what geed care means. These, and perhaps some mere causes, will account for nearly one-half of all the trees which die under the planter's hands. Very dry and warm, and very cold, or very dry windy seasons, may bring up the losses te fully one-half of all which die The ether half I would attribute te the trees having been grown in bad soil. There is always mere or less of a shock te the vital part of a trce in transplanting, and the tree needs te be in the highest vital condition te withstand this shock. The half starved tree can no mere stand a strain en its vital powers, than can a half- starved animal. The well-fed tree can de what the half-starved one cannot. When we talk of the overfed tree as a weakly constituted tree, we have of course the fat ex or the oil-barrel pig in mind ; but the tree will never ever-feed as the confined or boxed-up animal will. There is no mere chance of a tree overfeeding thau there is of finding an overfed wild rabbit, an over fed wild deer, or an overfed fish. The roots can only take up what the healthy foliage calls for. I must confess that I should never have thought of this reasoning, had it net been necessary te account for the severe losses I experienced in my early career as a trce planter. Aud if auy one else wishes te learn what experience has taught me, let him take fifty plants from unmanured ground, and fifty of about the same age and size from trees pver-fed en highly ma nured ground ; take them lumsell and net by deputy, and watch the result care fully, and I will stake my best plate of Sharplcss strawberries against his most favored pet, that he will never rail against a tree taken from well manured ground.
