CALAMITIES ON LAND AMI SKA.
Fires lu the IIusli aud Dangers en the Deep
Large bush fues are again reported in i
vaneus portions or Untaria. mere is
much alarm among tbe farmers near Hull,
their buildings being threatened.
The wrecked steamer Pliny, ashore en
Deal Beach, is fast breaking up, and the
beach is strewn with her debris. It is
doubtful if even her cngine can be saved.
The steamer Cella, from Londen for
New Orleans, put in yesterday at Halifax
ler coal, and reported thai she had been
unable te get into Sydney, Cape Breton,
because of ice.
The less by the fire at Lcadville, Col Col
orado, List Friday morning, is new esti
mated at 300.000. The body found in
the liver is believed te be that of Arthur
Hallow, aud the number of missing is re
duced te three.
Since the 23th of April 47 cases of
smallpox have been officially reported in
Trenten, New Jersey. Of this number 28
are under treatment in their homes, 12 are
in the hospital and 7 have died. All but
two of I he" sick are said te be recovering.

The schooner President, from Antwerp,
arrived at Quebec en Satmday night,
with six of ihe crew of the ship Western
Belle, lest in the ice en Hay I. The West
ern Belle ran into an iceberg .luring the
night, had her bows crushed in, and sank
in twenty minutes. The captain and thir
teen of the crew perished by V.m swamp
ing of one of the beats us the ship went
down. The male aud six ethers escaped
in the remaining beat, and were picked up
nest day neaily frozen te death.

diana coal region is against a reduction of

per ten. and a reduction of 5 per cent, en

A telegram from Pottsville says that
7.000 acres of coal lauds en the Bread
mountain, estimated te contain 100,000,000
tens of coal, have been leased for 25 years
te prominent capitalists of New Yerk and
Mauch Chunk. Six large collieries will
be built and mining operations begun at
once.
The Cleveland bridge and car works of
Cleveland, Ohie, of which II. M. (Martin is
president, made an assignment en Satur
day for its creditors. The wages of the
workmen arc t hrce months overdue. It is
paid the works " have en hand large con
tracts which will be profitable, but which
have already required such a large ex
penditure that payments could net be met
as they fell due ;" and that the suspen
sion ill be only temporary.
