WEDNESDAY KVKNlNO, MAY 10, 1882.
Mr. Earners Hew Deg.
AJloaster of Cnlaa Klegance and lteauty.
That Stepped a Play.
Mr. Jeseph K. Emmet was a constant
visitor at the late clog show and spent
most of his time while there loekinjjat a
huge St. Bernard dejr named Bayard, Jr.,
the property of Mr. Pepe, of Bosten, who
imported him last year. Bayard measures
seven feet from the tip of his nose te the
end of his tail. He is 32 j inches high
and weighs nearly 200 pounds. Ilis
color is white and red, with a
white cellar and nose, and he has
the much-prized "sawed eiess." He
U only twenty mouths old and
has a massive and beautiful head, with
the kindest face imaginuM?, and great in
telligent brown eyes. .Mr. Emmet took
such a fancy te Bayard that he asked Mr.
" - by telegraph if he would sell the deg
and"recfu " a rei'ly tliat ,l0 weu,d but

last night a repeiter of the World called
there te ask him if he intended te train
Bayard for the stage. The reporter was
shown into Mr. Emmet' .s dressing room,
and there found Mrs. Eninict sitting en the
fleer supporting Bayard's head en her lap,
while his body almost filled the little
aiwrliueut. In a few minutes Mr. Emmet
entered from the stage. "Yeu want te
knew what I'm going te de with Bayard'."'
said he. " Well, I don't knew exactly ; I
bought him as a present for my wife, and
it remains with her te decide. Wherever
we re Bayard gees, se if he is in the
theatre lie may just as well go en the
stage. Bayard has aheady made his de
but. He went en twice last week the
first tiiue was in the last act, where lam a
mountain yuide. lie looked se handsome
and se appropriate in that secue and was
se well received that I made up my mind
that I would let him appear in every scene
I could. Se the next night he went en in
the first act. and behaved splendidly until
the villain came en te steal Leua. Yeu
knew eii this incident the whole play
hiuges. This Bayard did net clearly un
derstand, and when the villain attempted
te steal the child Bayard saw all was net
right and drove him back te the wings.
Then standing guard ever the child, he
would net let anyone approach until I
went en and took him off se as te let the
play proceed."
"Is it true that you paid $2,S00 for the
de?" " , ,
" Yet. ; it is a larg price, but then.yeu
knew, it's a large deg but, jekiug apart,
he is worth the money."
" Will you net find him a rather in
convenient pet te take around the coun
try ?"'
" Well, there are drawbacks of course.
Fer instance, yesterday my wife sent a
bell-boy at the hotel te her rooms te get a
parcel, but the dex interfered and s-carcd
the boy ueariy te death, and new the
porter when I ring for him conies te the
deer, puts his head in aud says, ' Mistlur
Immet, is the deg loose, I den knew '.'' 1
say, ' All right, Pat, come in, I'll held
him.' 'Faith i will net ; av he wanted te
beite me twilvc min wouldn't held him,'
he replied. Se unless I lock the deg in
another room I don't have any fire. He
is net in the least cress, however, aud I
don't think he would hurt any ene.1"
" I would net part with him for $0,000,''
said Mrs. Emuiett.
As the reporter left Bayard was stand
ing en his hiud legs in the doorway with
his feiclect en Mr. Emmet's shoulders
and his head nearly touching the ceiling.

WEDNESDAY:
Mr. Hugh Graham, of the firm
of Darlington, Runk & Ce., has
just new severed his connection
with that house, te take charge
el our dressmaking and cloak
making. He is already at his
work.
We have great satisfaction in
making this announcement. It
is, se far as dressmaking gees,
somewhat like the beginning of
the culmination of old plans.
Years age, before we began
this store, before we owned the
round en which it stands, we
turned ever in our minds the
question : Why; shouldn't we
dress ladies as well as gentle
men? We talked with Mr. Gra
ham about it, as the most know
ing man we knew of en such
matters. The plan grew en our
liking, Our business has new
come te the stage' at which we
fairly make a sort of new be
ginning in the matter of ladies'
dress; and just in the nick of i
time, when everything conspires
te assure our undertaking, we
have the help of Mr. Graham
himself.
Besides Mr. Graham, the fol
io wins' have come with him from
the same heuse: Miss Simms,
litter; Mrs. Wallazz, superin
tendent of workroom; Miss
Keller, cutter: Miss Peeples,
draper ; Miss Ferry, fitter ; Miss
I lanceck, forewoman; four sales
woman ; and perhaps forty or
fifty dressmakers.
The change occurs happily in
the midst of the busy time, when
our facilities arc already geed,
and when there is the largest in
centive te make the most of
them. The workroom is eii
largcd at once and every prepa
ration is made for such trade as
is sure te come. We need net
be modest in inviting the most
fastidious and particular people ;
for we shall certainly de the
most careful and tasteful work.
i:Wland IS).; Chestnut sired.
Chudda dress-cloths just re
ceived are a little below value ;
623 cents. Chudda means soft

India shawl fabric.
Third eii cle. Thirteenth street entrance.
Shepherd's checks of very
dull gray and brown melange
effects at 75 cents. Such cloths
always bring $i, unless by mis
adventure of some sort,
Second circle, southeast lrem centre.
Linens for men's and boys'
wear; white, browns, grays,
checks and stripes; 25 cents te
$1.25. Seme of these have te
be part cotton ; for linen does
net take colors well. We have
most of the sorts in use.
Thfrtcciith-slreel entrance.
Linen lawns a splendid stock ;
and the best thing about it is
the pure linen. Net a shred of
cotton in them. The prices
ought te say that; figured, 25
te 374 cents; white, 31 te 62
cents.
We came near saying te-day
that some mildewed handker
chiefs would come out of the
laundry perfect. We wait one
day te try a few. If they don't
wash clear and perfect they're
worth hardly anything.
Outer-circle, Chestnut street entrance.
Fans from one cent te ihirly
three dollars. One might leek
at fans here all day, and scarce
ly see two alike ; se many styles
there are.
Second circle, northeast from centre.
The only American perfumes
that are at all equal te the works
of the great perfumers of Lon Len Lon
eon and Paris are these of Alfred
Wright. These perfumes are
made with a rare scrupulous
ness, se as te be always exactly
alike. They arc put up in 1
qz. and larger bottles ; a trille
mere than full weight of the
liquid. They arc sold, at whole
sale, at one price te every dealer
who buys them, big or little a
druggist can buy them as low as
we. The trade in them appears
te be as strict a trade as can be
imagined..
