OUR STREET COMMISSIONER.
Ills Monuments We See, But Where Is lie?
Street Commissioner Le van's mud monu
ments still adorn the principal streets of
the city. What they lese in height by
being trampled down by horses and mules
they gain in width se that nothing of their
fair proportion is lest.
Fer some time past there has been lying
outside the pavement of the Hicstcr house,
and almost upon the crossing leading te
the railroad depot, a large loeso stone,
weighing perhaps. 200 pounds. At two
o'clock this afternoon as Henry P. Dor Der
wart was crossing the street, hurriedly, he
tripped against the stone and was thrown
heavily te the ground, bruising himself,
Bkinning his face and soiling his clothing.
When the street commissioner begins te
clean up if he ever shall begin he might
remove this nuisance along with his mud
monuments.

were at the time in fhe caboose. Tht
engineer of engine 361 which was follow
ing 302, saw the detached part of the train
approaching him and whistled down
brakes. The men in the caboose took
alarm and saved themselves by jumping
from the train. The caboose struck engine
301 with such force that it was smashed
te pieces, and the engine was thrown from
the track. The passengcr trains both
east and west were delayed about half
an hour. Nene of the train hands were
injured.

down Strawberry street, which runs from
Seuth lueen street te lleigart's Landing.

in the rear of Woodward Hill cemetery,
and in a few minutes the neighbors heard
the report of a pistol. The people who
heard the noise were alarmed and in a few
moments were surprised te see a man walk
up Strawberry street towards Seuth Queen.
He was bleeding profusely from a wound
in the head and scorned te be in pain.
Shortly after ten o'clock Adam Bertsch,
well known in the city, came te the house
of Paul Hepting, Seuth Queen street. He
was bleeding freely from a wound in
bis head, and was cared for.
He said that he received the wound
in a fight which he had with a negre, back
of the cemetery, in which the latter struck
him with a stone. Adam was dressed in
blue clothing, and it is supposed that he is
the man who shot himself, as he came out
of Strawberry street te the residence of
Mr. Hepting. The wound, though pain
ful, is net serious. It is supposed that
suicide was his intention.

Ratifying Previous Orders et the Bemcs The
Republican Convention In Session.
The Slate Intact.
Special dispatch te the Intelligencer.
Hahkisbuhg, May 10. Tlie bosses Lave
this convention entirely in their hands.
Its organization was only delayed until all
the orders were distributed and under
steed. The last slate of last night will go
through. ICawIe will be nominated at the
sacrifice of any possible chance Living
ston had, and Butler will be cengrcssman-at-large.
Oiling the Slachlur.
Haruisuurg, May 10. This nieruiusr
there appears te be no change in the slate7
as given out last night, and the dissatisfac
tien ever its arrangement lias net materi
ally subsided. A ecncral caucus of all
the delegates was called te order promptly
of 1ft '1- i.: : l... i,..i Ji
..u v7 v viuv-iw tuia muiuiilj; ujr imuiu, Ol
Beaver, and Charles II. Mullen, of Cum
berland, was niade chairman, with Cyrus
T. Fex, of Heading, secretary. The first
work done was the appeintineut of a com
mittee of live en order of business
te be brought before the con
vention. "While this committee, which
consisted of Messrs. liutan, of
Beaver ; Buun, of Philadelphia ; Mageo.
of Pittsburgh ; llustcd, of Delaware, and
Steel, of Crawford, was out, the chairman
of the caucus made a suggestion that all
delegates intending te make nominations
in the convention haud the names of
their candidates te the secretary of the
caucus. This was put in the form of a
motion, but created se much dissatisfac
tien that it was allowed te drop. The
committce of five then reported the tempo
rary organization as reported iu these dis
patches last night, which was agreed upon.
It was agreed te have appeiuted a com
mittee of nine en credentials, a committee
of ene from each senatorial district en
resolutions, and it was further decided
that all resolutions offered in the cenveu
tien must be referred te the committee en
resolutieus without debate. The order of
nominations will be as fellows : Fir.st
governor, second supreme judge, thiul
lieutenant governor, fourth secretary of
internal allaiis, lifth ceugrcssman-at-

as this oflice was saudwichud in between
these of governor and lieutenant governor.
At the adjournment of the caucus the
delcgatcs proceeded te the opera house
where the convention was called te order
at 1:10 o'clock. The scats set apart for
delcgatcs were all filled quickly and the
stage, which is usually set apart for elliccrs
of the convention and newspaper corre
spondents, was densely crowded with
onlookers, while the gallercs were only
partially tilled. After the roll had
been called, a delegate who did net leek
particularly delicate, arese and asked the
chair te request all persons who wcre
smoking cigars te cease such indulgence.
Without the formality of a request from
the chair the smoking at ence ceased.
The Peace; Conference Resolutions.
A communication from Cel. Quay's
committee, reporting the result of the con
ference at the Continental hotel and asking
consideration for the resolutions there
adopted was read. Without a reading of
the resolutions the papers were referred te
the. committee en resolutions en motion of
Senater Rutau.
KlrbpatrlcU's rircu erks.
Judge Kirkpatrick,tomper.iry chairman,
then assumed the chair and en doing .se
referred te the victorious march the Re
publican party had made from the time of
its organization down te the present ;
taking high moral ground en every
fresh question that arose ; light
ing the battles of slavery and
nationalism succcbslully, and giving
te the country net a mere federation but a
great powerful united nation. After
adding a reference te the victories the
party had scored in its contests for
honest money the speaker said that
such a record proved the party te be
ene of high moral principles ; a party
that could safely be judged for the f uture
by its past. Judge KTrkpatrick said he
was preuti ei tne ceuiticts that spring up
in the party because they bespeak a
healthy aud moral imlopcndcuce of thought
Out of the cenllict at Chicago was evolved
that proud spirit, James A. Garlield, under
whose banner the party marched te ene of
its greatest victories, and the speaker be
lieved that out of the recent conflicts in
this slate there would step forth a mau
whose soldierly and civil record was a bril
liant one.
Tlie secretaries selected in the caucus
were elected and a committce of nine en
credentials provided for en a motion of
Gen. McCteary, of Erie. The committce
as announced was as fellows : McCrcary,
of Erie ; Wallace, of Lawrence ; Mell
vaine, of Washington ; Magce, of Alleg
heny ; Allen, of Warren ; Leeds, of Phil
adelphia ; Powers, of Philadelphia ;
Ilirsb, of Adams ; uydcr, of Chester.
Committees en resolutions and perma
nent organization, each consisting of a
delegate from each senatorial district,
were then appointed, and it was agreed
that te the committce en resolutions all
resolutions and papers presented should
be referred without debate.
A motion te take a recess of ten min
utes for the purpose of constituting the
committees was voted down, and that
work was proceeded with. Contestants
were notified te appear bofero the com
mittee en credentials en 1 o'clock, p. m.,
in the Senate librarian room, and a recess
until half-past two p. in. was ordered.
Tliajer Against Rawle.
2:e0 p. m. The convention is new about
xeasscmbling with a prospect of getting
through in time te enable delegates te take
trains. The only change in the situation
since adjournment is that Judge Thayer,
of Philadelphia, is te be pitted against
Rawlc for the supreme court judgeship in
stead of ex-Judge Brewster.
A caucus of the Philadelphia delegation
was called te meet immediately alter ad
journment, but it did net get together
until 2 o'clock, when it was agreed te
drop Brewster and unite the anti-RawIe
strength en Judge Thayer.
Ontjie question of the secretaryship of
internal affairs the delegates were left te
vete according te their own choice, and
as the bulk of them will go for Greer he
lattei's nomination is almost as certain as
Beaver's.
The delegates will also vete as they
please en congrcssman-at-large. Butler's
nomination for the oflice is also a foregone
conclusion.
