Lord Caveudlsb, the Sen Cnief Secretary,
ana Under Secretary Uurke, Stabbed te
Death Id a Fnblic J'arlc, lu Lo.'den.
Lord Frederick Cavcndisb, chief Becre-
larj- for Ireland, and Under Sacrctarjr
Burkp, were stabbed te death en Saturday
evening iu Pliesnix Park, Dublin. Lord
Cavendish and Earl Speucei bad remained
iu Dublin Castle, engaged in official busi
ness until six o'clock in the evening, when
each drove te his tespective residence.
After dinner Lord Cavendish and Mr.
Themas Henry Burke, under secretary
for It eland, went for a walk iu Phejnix
Park. Ne arrests have been made.
The two secretaries were stielling in the
park, about half a mile from the city gate
and a quarter of a mile from the chief sec
retary's ledge, when a car drove up con
taining four men, two of whom jumped
down from the car and attacked Lord
Cavendish and Mr. l.urkc, stabbing them
both several times in the threat and
breast. The victims struggled hajd for
life, and in the sttuggle became separated,
their bodies being found some teu paces
apatt. The tragedy occurred about ten
minutes of seven o'clock in the evening
and in bread daylight. The bodies were
first discovered by two yenug gentlemen
who were riding bicycles thieugh the
park, aud who immediately gave the a'ann
te the police. Surgeons seen reached the
spel, but the police weie already convey
ing Mr. Buike's body away te the town,
where afcexaminatien showed life te be
extinct. The upper part of the body was
perforated in a shocking manner and pre
sented "a ghastly sight. Proceeding fur
ther, the medical men reached the body of
Lord Caveudidh, who was being conveyed
away from the park en a stretcher. The
body of the chief secretary displayed the
same dreadful wounds, in addition te
which his left arm was atee broken and
tern, as if he had put it up te protect his
breast. Lord Cavendish was quite dead.
The bodies were taken te Stevens hos
pital, where they will remain until an in
quest is held.
The locality of the outrage is hen ibly
marked with bleed. The spot wheie the
body of Lord Fiedetick Cavendish was
found was absolutely deluged, while
Mr. Burke's body lay iu a peel of bleed.
It is wiid that alter the act the murderers
immediately dieve off. There seems te be
no clue te the assassination, but the police
arc taking most extraordinary measures te
discover the perpetratets. A large quan
tity of notes and geld coin, besides their
geld watches, were leund in the pockets of
the victims, which sdiewed that the object
of the ciimc was net robbery. Great ex
citement prevails throughout Dublin and
widespread indignation is express ed ever
the event.

Discovery of :i Gigantic Seheiue or i'raud in
M. I.OUI.
A gigantic scheme of fraud and feigery
has been unearthed in 5r. Leuis by
United States Distiict Attorney Bliss. A
linn under the n.-me of Burt & Miller
occupied a room en the corner of Fifth
and Chestnut streets, from which they
sent out citcttlars efl'eting government
land scrip for sale. The authorities made
a descent upon the. office, but the princi
pals had down. Meanwhile Jehn B.
Cameren, believed te be a confederate of
the gang, was ancstcd .at Sioux Falls,
Dakota, by the instrumentality of the
telegraph. He was taken te Yankton,
whither a deputy United States sheriff has
gene te bring him here. District Attorney
Bliss believes theie is an organized ling
who have ceuntei foiled the land sctip.and
that their opeiatiens have been very ex
tensive, lie says they realize 90 per
cent, of the value of the scsip, and that
the gang must have leahV.cd fiem $300,000
te $300, 000. Iu St. Leuis, he says, thry
succeeded in swindling te the amount of
30,000. Further arrests and develop
ments ate expected.
A Terrible rail.
The staging en which ten Bosten tivct
cis, employed in building a bridge ever
the Connecticut liver railroad at Cheap
side, fell, precipitating eight men a dis
tance of sixty-live feet te the ground, in
juring all of them and two fatally. Hugh
Warnock and Eumau Wistner are the two
men most seriously injured. They will
net live. - The ethers are sctieusly injured
about the spine and two will sulfer from
paralysis, Jehn O'Bitcn and Themas
Flavin, while ethers, Jeseph II. Nichols
and Michael Crawley ate in a piccarieus
condition. The bridge was partially built
by D. II. Andrews, of Bosten. The stag
ing stoedlC) feet from the liver, but the
men fell te the bank with tools and furnace
and landed en soft earth. They were a'l
removed to'Beston en a special train this
forenoon aud made as comfei table as pos.

The Croebcd Commissioners.
McKiuney Smith, ex-county commis
sioner of Lycoming, has been arrested for
subornation of perjury growing out of
his trial and acquittal for lergery' befeic
the criminal court and held for trial. The
information was made by A. J. Webster,
one of the counsel engaged iu pi esecuting
him for forgery. His arrest was hastened by
a suspicion that he was preparing te leave
the county te avoid further preset tTi n
for peculations whihi u office. The beard
of county commissioners employed Samuel
L. Linn, P. It. Allen and Addison Cander
te conduct the proposed suit against the
members of the old beard en the charge
of robbing the ceupty. Their arrest will
seen fellow and their alleged crooked con
duct will uuderge a rigid judicial investigation.

William S. Watsen, cashier of the West
Branch national bank of Williamsport, one
of the eldest and soundest banking insti
tutions in that part of the state, has sud
denly disappeared. On Wednesday even
ing, at a late hour, he visited the heuse of
F. E. Gleim, the first teller, and, handing
him the keys of the safe, said that he was
going away and would net be back before
the following day at neon, and before the
teller could interrogate him further he had
disappeared. Ne message was left for bis
father, Oliver Watsen, the president of
the bank, or any member of his own
family. He did net take a large amount
of money with him. On the 1st inst., he
had drawn his salary for April, amounting
te $223. He also had under bis charge a
fund of $25,000 belonging te his father,
fiem which he drew $5,000, leaving his
individual note for it. This is believed te
be all ibe money he took with him.
It appears that a ceuple of years age he
became intimate with a woman named
Annie Tayler, rcsidiug in Williamsport. His
relations with her caused trouble at his
home, but he kept up his attentions. A
lew days age the woman went te New
Yerk. It ii believed Watsen followed her,
for en Friday ninht a letter was received
from him, dated New Yerk, in which he
stated that things were getting tee het
for him and that he would sail en Thurs
day next for Seuth America, and that he
did net want te see anybody from this place
seen again. A meeting et the directors of
the bank was held this morning, when an
examination of the books was made and
the accounts of the absconding cashier
were found all right. Oliver Watsen, the
father of the cashier, is one of the eldest,
most lespected and wealthiest citizens of
Williamsport. During his long and busy
life he has accumulated au estate which
will probably icach a million and a half of
dollars. He is an invalid, having been
confined te his room all winter, euly being
able te appear upon the streets onee or
twice during that time. His son, the ab
sconding cashier, was virtually president
of the bank and attended te nearly all the
business He was se highly regarded by
his father that he left nearly all the finan
cial duties of the office te him anil he
would undoubtedly succeeded his father
as piesideut of the bank when the latter
retired. Se much faith was lepesed in
him by his father that some time age he
deeded te him the old homestead iu Wil Wil
liaraspeit, where he resided.
Aside from the common reports the con
duct of the ca.shier is in many respects a
mystery, and it is believed that there must
be something moie serious yet te be dis
covered which caused him te act se pre
cipitately and foolishly. He was in geed
financial condition himself. He received
a geed salary for his services and was net
in straightened eiicum.stanres. His father
and mother arc very much distsessed ever
his sudden and strange disappearance,
and his wife and llve childien, although
paituHy estranged from him, aic teperted
as nearly distracted.

A fire broke out in Goedrich's warehouse
about 10 o'clock Friday night, whence it
rapidly spread te the lumber yards and
elevators. The names get beyeud control
and engines were snmmened from Mil

was feared that the en tire city would be
swept away aud the most exaggerated re
ports were sent abroad. An area of about
fifteen acres were burned, embracing the
section bounded by the lake en the cast,
by the river en the south aud west and by
Fourth street en the north, in all about
seven city blocks. Early in the ' morning
it was reported that the losses would
amount te $13,000,000, but it is new be
lieved that they will euly be about $750,
000, en which there was about a quarter
of a million insurance. That part of the
city that is iu ashes was the eldest and
least ornamental, being largely composed
of inferior buildings, with here and there
a fine one. The citizens have net lest heart
