Heist reported an uiuusei irena very premising ; clever very peer. Peter Hcrshey reported an almost com plete failure of the clever, in the eastern end of the county, even en the best-laud ; and, singular as it may apiwar, the better the ground the poorer the clever. Jehn O. Liimville reperted a similar state of affairs in Salisbury. Some iields of clever arc entirely bare, llohaseno field of ttiuty, clayey ground, which was burned last summer as hard as a brick, and there the grass is better thau elsewhere. I he wheat is geed in Salisbury ; net se geed in East Earl, and werse a lev.' miles cast of this city. S. P. Eby said in loeso soil the clever is frozen out, while in hard soil it leeks lwl N't- J. G. Rcsh made a similar statement. The poorer the land the better the clever. He suggested that iields, in which clever had missed this year, should be sewn in rye in the fall aud the rye be cut for hay be : ere it comes into head, and then plow the land for clever. II. 31. It should net be planted tee early nor tee deep, nor when the ground is cold ; the .seed should net be covered tee deeply, net ineie than an iuch at mesfc. The largest special crops have been 1 nc,ic Tey9 grown in drills, out tue laiguat .huu cieus in hills, where it can be worked both ways. Cultivate up te tasseling tinie, but net tee deeply. Sucker the corn carefully, as the suckers draw the substance from the stalk, and if the suckers arc allowed te tassel the pollen irem mum awu iiii nate the main stalks and deteriorate the crop. , . . S. P. Euy narrated his experience in cultivating Arabian coin. He plauted in hills, soaked the seed in tar water and sprinkled it with plaster. It came up sooner than dry seed and escaped the ravages of birds. . Jehu G. Rcsh did net think Lancaster county farmers should make corn grow ing a specialty ; we can buy it cheaper thau wc can raise it. Mere attention te the growth of wheat aud tobacco will pay better. Peter Ilershey regarded the corn crop as a vcry important one ; mera important than wheat, as it is a mero certain crop aud requires less manure. He planted his corn in rows, three feet apart, with hills two feet apart, two stocks te the hill, and cultivated only in one direction. He agreed with Mr. Engle that the seed should net be covered tee deeply, neither should the plowing nor cultivating be tee deep. Jehu Meuk asked for information as te the value of the Chester county mammoth variety of corn. President Witmer had tried it and did net like it ; it grew well, produced large earr but required tee long a tnne te ripen, and the grains shriveled very much ail or husking. Mr. Engle endorsed what Mr. Eby said about soaking aud tarring aud plastering the seed corn. He preferred gas tar te tai water. He did net agree with Mr. Hi sh that it was necessary te manure the corn iields. lie preferred te seed his corn in a two-ycar-eld clever-sod, without manure. The Chester county mammoth is nothing mero thau the large gourd va r:cty. It has big stock, big cob and light weight grain. It moulds in the ciib aud will net bring as much per bushel in the market as the smaller vatitics. In answer te a question by Mr. Reist, Mr. Engle said Ifcat "the yellows " in corn is caused by a small black or bluish aphis, something Iike the apple aphis ; knew of no remedy for it, but thinks that salt applied te the roots might be a remedy. Commercial Fertilizers en Potatoes. " Can commercial fertilizers be profit ably used en the potato crop, aud hew hhenld they be applied ?" Mr. Engle an swered that any geed fertilizer properly applied will pay. But thcre are te many varieties of commercial fertilizers it is necessary te select the best. He believed auy fertilizers containing potash and phos phoric acid te be valuable. A great deal, however, depends en the nature of the soil, which should receive whatever iugrcdient il lacks, whether it be mitregcu, potash or phosphoric acid. Farmers must experi ment for themselves and net depend ou book learning. J. C. Linville said that he had used phosphates en his potatoes with geed effect. The enl y safe rule is te apply a fertilizer that contains all the elements cf plant feed. If barn yard manure is used it should be thoroughly composted and decomposed. He applies commercial fertilizers toy sewing them upon the reed in the rows. A. Talk About L!me. " Hew should lime be applied en the juiface, or plowed under?" Jehn C. Linville answered that the lime should be kept as near the surfaoe as possible He Have Signed or Endorsed tlie Fol lowing Remarkable Decument. .Ui!.sr. Scfiburu A JoJmsen.
