In Somerset yesterday the exciting trial of the 'commonwealth vs. Jenah King anil N. P. and G. W. Rcid, editors and pub lishers et the Pittsburgh Commercial-Gazette, for ciiminal libel, ended at neon in a verdict of guilty ill manner and form as indicted. Gcueral A. II. CoilVelh was the prosecutor, aud the libel consisted isi an allegation inade in a Washington special published in the paper in February last. The special alleged that it had hern dis covered that General Collreth had while in Gengicss, as chaiiiuau of tlie committee en pensions, been in the habit of writing te applicants for pensions in his district; that he had urged ferwaid their papers se that their ca'ies would speedily be settled and pensions allowed, while, in fact he had done nothing in the matter, but left all the papers in a confused mass, which his successor en the committee was unable te i educe te order. Immediately after the publication Gen. Collreth instituted a criminal suit for libel in the court of Somerset county against the proprietors of the paper. The defense did net endeavor te establish the truth of the statement, but put the author of the telegram en the stand, who tcstilicd that he lcceivvd the information from Gee. J. -M. Campbell, Gen. Collreth's successor, aud that the matter was telegraphed in geed faith and without malice. This defence did net bccm adequate te the jury, as a verdict of guilty was tendered in half au hour after retirement. Gen. William 11. Koeutz aud A. .1. Cel born assisted the prosecution and the defense was conduct ed by Maj. A. ill. Brown, of Pittsburgh. If it is believed by the defendants that the question of cists had iulliicnce in de ciding the case, as the jury was leth te put a large amount of costs eif the county and the large number of witnesses from abroad made the ee-t heavy. A motion for a new trial was entered at ence, and the defend ants returned te Pittsburgh.
