structed te make arrest en view and bring
before me cases of drunken and disorderly
persons, vagrants, etc. I de net gen
erally hear cases or larceny or like offences
because 1 have net time te attend te them.
I have repeatedly instructed the police
men, both these who arc appointed, as
well as the constables, te bung cases of
drunken and disorderly conduct before
me ; they take these cases before aldermen
because they can make Jarger fees by se
doing. I have punished by suspension offi
cers who have taken parties before alder
men for the puipeses of multiplying fees.
There is net the shadow of truth in the
charge made in one of the papers that I
had an alderman at the station house te
whom cases were turned ever that should
have been heard by me. I have in a few
instances sent elTcndcis, who weic my
personal fiiends, te be heard by auether
magistrate, bccaiibc I did net like te ban
dle the cases. I never directed auy police,
man te go eutsiJe-the city te arrest the
parties suspected of stealing ie.stagc
stamps. The police arc paid 40 per
mouth for doing police duty ; am net pre
pared te say whether an alderman can
dismiss a case without a hearing and claim
costs of a complaint and an unexecuted
warrant. The only icincdy I can suggest
te prevent the multiplication of cases and
fees is the passage of a law by the Legis
lature requiting poisons who make com
plaint te give security for the costs.

Twenty Minutes. Imposing
Funeral Honors.
Panama, April 12. A steamer from the
Seuth brings particulars of the death of
Gen. Hurlbut. He was in his usual health
when he arose en the 27th ult. He played
for some, time with his grandchildren.
While washing he was suddenly seized with
intense pain around the heart. Ilis
loud and agenizing'cries aroused every one
in the house. On being lifted from the
fleer te the bed he recovered moderately
and said, "Ged bless you all ; I am dying ;
eh, my heart !" A few mere disjointed
phrases were all he uttered. A sharp
convulsive shock then ran through his
body and in less than twenty minutes
from the first attack he was dead.
The lamily declined the offer of the
Chilian government te give him a public
funeral. The funeral was a most imposing
one. The streets through which the cor
tege passed were thronged with spectators
and many of the houses were draped in
menrmng. Flags were at half mast en
the public buildings at Lima and Callae,
and the stores in both cities were closed
during the funeral.
Prier te the cortege leaving the legation
the Episcopal service was read by Mr.
Lewis. The casket was placed en the
handsome hearse of the Italian fire brigade
and preceeded by about one hundred
Free Masens of all nationalities in ordi
nary costume and was drawn by volunteer
Americans, ihe remains were followed
by all the official dignitaries heie, includ
ing Admiral Lynch, the Chilian com
mander ; the American and French ad
mirals ; American, French, Italian and
Chilian naval officers anda score of Peru
vians, well known here if net abroad.
Bringing up the rear, ene thousand strong
at least, was every Peruvian in Luna,
(dressed iu strict mourning), belonging te
the party of which Gatuica Calderon was
chief. They were followed by the studeuts
of the Sau Carles university. On the
arrival at the railway station the casket
was placed in a fuueral car and taken te
Yillejas whence it was conveyed te the
Meiggs vault. Senores Terrazos Pinte,
the minister for Salvader, Carles Elias
and Cesaerc Chacaltaua delivered eloquent
aud impressive speeches in eulogy of the
deceased and the proceedings terminated.
On the 6th of next month the casket
will be removed with every solemnity and
a precession of beats from the men-of-war
and merchantmen ia Callae will accem
pany it te the steamer, which will convey
it te Panama en leute for the United
States.
Rumors gained currency that General
Hurlbut had been poisoned by opposing
political factious. Net much weight was
attached te these rumors, siuce everyone
is satisfied that he died from natural
causes, but as a precautionary measuiea
portion of the stomach has been sealed in
a jar aud will be forwarded te New Yerk
for analysis.

FRIDAY:
American satins printed with
roses, daisies and nondescript
flowers, and with dots of all
sizes near together and farapart.
.All colors of grounds and many
colors of printing. $1.25 and
1-35-
These have just come and
new is the best time te see them.
Why ? The makers are proba
bly done making for the season ;
and the whole supply is in the
market. There's no scarcity :
but there will be a scarcity of
geed patterns long before the
buying time is ever. Nobody
wants te have any left at the end
of the season. Everybody plans
te have a scarcity before the
buying time ends.
Surah, gres-grain and satin
merveilleux of every color re
quired te matcht hem ; and that
is a piece of rare geed news,
Ncci-fluter circle. Chestnut-street entrance.
Camel's-hair grenadines of
ten pretty patterns of silk plaid
and check at 7S and S1; cents.
Yesterday we were twice offered
the very same grenadines at 1,
which means that they are worth
$1.25 at retail. We happen te
have get one and two pieces
that's all of each of these ten
patterns 'at 75 and 85 cents a
yard.
Black albatross of four quali
ties, 2)72 te 60 cents ; 40 te 45
incher Avide.
New forget that we've been
selling the 60-cent quality at
Ziyi cents.. If we get any mere
of it, se that we can sell it at
that price, we shall be very glad.
Meantime we are giving a full
money's-worth en all ; and a
quarter mere than the money's
worth en one the 37 cent
ie inch.
Next-outer circle, Chestnut street entrance.
Flannel with silk embroidered
clots
is new ; 75 cents"
navy-blue with white dots,
navy-blue with cardinal dots,
light-blue with pink dots,
light-blue with lighter-blue dot,
inazarliie with, white dots,
black wtth white dots.
Matelasse flannel at 50 cents,
is new ; it is net new at 60 ; but
the 50 cent quality is net se fine
and soft.
Such a collection of flannels
is hardly te be seen anywhere ;
about 1 50 different stripes and
plaids ; all the plain colors you
can think of; and w.hite of mere
sorts, qualities anil textures than
you would read, if we should
write.
Outer circle, northeast lreni centre.
Grenadines are beyond these
e.f any former season, net only
in variety of patterns, but in
richness of effects and even of
textures. The weather se far
has kept back the sale of them ;
and the assortment is best new.
Next-outer elrele.Cheslnut street, cn'ratice.
Axminster, mequette, brus
sels, tapestry and ingrain carpets
are at their best new ; and we
are able te de mere carpet
work than we are doing; besides
mere room is getting ready.
Mattings are at their best alse:
Net th gallery.
Pin-dot Swiss at 28 cents of
a quality that usually costs 40.
Only pin dots ; larger dots at
full prices.
Fourth-circle, City hall square entrance.
Mull and batiste neck-handkerchiefs
with a little brilliant
silk embroidery in one corner.
The centre of batiste and the
border of mull of a darker
shade; such combinations. The
fichu itself is worth about 35
cents, and the embroidery about
2-j mere. The price of the
whole is 26 cents ; 1 200 of them ;
and they are beautiful.
When had you better come
for yours ?
Third circle, southeast from centre.
Deuble damask napkins at
$i.5e a dozen; of which we sold
last fall 1 2,000 te a New Yerk
merchant at $i.65; and he get
his money's worth, tee.
Buying linens, as we de from
makers of all countries, quite a
little wholesale trade comes
without our seeking. It helps
us te buy much, and se te buy
low.
