Tliey Pretest Against ' thm Treatment et
ulshep Paine la Ylerhl.
On February 20, Right Rev. Daniel A.
Payne, D. D.," LL. D., the senior bishop of
the African 21. E. church, was expelled
from a first-class car en the Jacksonville
& Fcrnandina railroad in Flerida, as is al
leircd. en account of his color. The con
ducter ordered him te leave the car and go
into a smoking car, m which there was no
fire. He refused te de se, as he. had paid
for a first-class ticket, and desired a first
class passage. The conductor then ejected
him from the train, about five miles from
Jacksonville, and he was compelled te
walk te that place with twenty-seven
peunus et baggage.
In Piladelphia the ether evening a large
meeting of colored citizens was held in the
Bethel A. M. . chureti, Sixth street be
low Pine, te express their indignation at
the conduct of the railroad company's
officials toward Bishop Payne. Bishop J.
P. Campbell, of Philadelphia, evoked
much laughter and applause by bis recital
of his own experiences en railroads in the
Seuth. The bishop is a short, stout and
' very active man, with gray hair and leeks
as if he were strong enough te de all that he
said he did. "I think," said he, that Bishop
Payne must have run across the same con
ductor that I once had a little experience
with. It was en the same railroad anyway.
I bought a first-class ticket and en
tered a first-class coach. After the train
had proceeded some distance the conduc
tor came te me and said, ' See here, old
fellow, you'll have te go into the smoking
car.' I told him I didn't smoke, that I
had bought a first-class ticket, and pro
posed te stay just where I was. He then
tried te drag me from the seat, but I let fly
at him with my fists, and he concluded it
was tee warm for him just then. With an
oath he left the car, and shortly returned
with four men, who all pitched into me.
I get myself into a corner, and for twenty
miles I fought these four ruffians with
hands and feet. I wen the day, tee, but
thcre waus't much left of the seat where I
had been sitting. The only way te de is
te fight for our rights, if we cannot secure
them in any ether way." The bishop was
loudly applauded.
A DifiVrent Version.
The Jacksonville (Fla.) Union gives
another version of the alleged ejectment of
Bishop Payne. According te the state
ment of the conductor of the train, who is
vouched for by the Union as a reliable
man in all respects, en the day in question
thcre was a large party of colored men
going from Jacksonville te Fcrnandina te
a church gatheriug, the party being
granted half-fare rates and provided with
a car "equal in all its appointments" te
the one occupied by the white passengers.
In this car all the colored excur
Monists took scats except Bishop
Payne, who was unknown te the con
ductor, and who seated himself in the car
occupied by the whites. When asked for
his ticket he presented one of the half
faie tickets, but was toldbythecenductcr
that he could net recognize that ticket in
that car, and requested him te go into the
forward car, whereupon Bishop Payne be
came indignant and declared that he would
net move, but that the conductor could
step his train and eject him. This the
conductor would net de, but told his un
known passenger that the train would
.step at the next station when he could
cither get off or take the car called for by
the ticket. The bishop took the first horn
of the dilemma, get off at the station,
which was four miles from Jacksonville,
and walked back te that city. The Union
says this Is absolutely all there is in the
affair.
