OUR TIMBER LANDS.
DESTROYING THE GBKAT FORESTS.
The Wasteful Havoc Which is Being: Worked
In the West and the Serious Consequences.
Gen. Jas. T. Brlsbin in N. T. World.
" Our National Legislature," tritely ob
serves Bryant, is almost wholly indifferent
te the fate of our forests, and betrays a
destitution of statesman like forecast that
is painful. If this was all it would net be
se bad ; but, aside from their indifference,
the Congress is constantly squandering
large bodies of our forest lands en public
corporations, who are obtaining them enly
for profit, and who will destroy them with
mere rapacity even than private indi
viduals. Candidly, I believe thit very
many of our congressmen de net credit
the statements and theories that, by de
nuding a country of its forests, you can
injure its productiveness. Seme of them
have lived a great many years and as yet
have seen no evil etlects from the cutting
down of forests, nor have they experienced
any scarcity of fireweed at home. Wise
men ; te them there is no ether land than
Spain, and no ether age than that in
which they live. It is new nearly fifty
years since Dr. Drake, of Cincinnati,
proposed te Congress the ' importance of
saving our feiests. Failing in this
he begged the government te at least re
serve tracts of woodland around the head
waters of the principal streams as a means
of preventing tlfeir diminution. The wise
doctor was poehed at and thought a little
cracked. Well, seme of the streams he
proposed te save are almost valueless, and
in a half century meie will be cnthely
useless for purposes of navigation. Proba
bly the doctor did net anticipate the time
would ceme whca.thcsc reserves would be be be
ceme important as a source of timber sup
ply ; and if he had proposed such a thing,
he would have deen laughed at outright.
It is needless te say that Congress disre
garded Dr. Drake's advice, and te-day the
childien of the. very men who poehed at
the doctor are suffering for the tellies of
their fathers. Maine, New Yerk and
Pennsylvania are practically ruined as
timber states, and their streams are
gradually drying up. In twenty-five
years mero the Northwestern states
will be as bad, or even woifce off, or
timber than the Eastern states arc, and
in twenty-five years meie the timber
famine in the United States will begin.
Geed, say the cengicssmcn and timber
vandals of te day, we shall be dead by that
time, and why should we care what hap
pens then ? Americans ewe mero than
any ether people en earth te the toils,
sactificcs aud forethought of their fore fere
fathcis, and it is their duty tvery man's
duty te transmit the inheritance they
received from them te their descenrieuts
unimpaired by "waste or neglect. . Says
Bryant, " the length of time required for
the growth of timber from the seed te ma
turity shows conclusively that it was
never destined in the order of nature fur
the exclusive use of a single generation."
Ner is this all. The man who wantonly
destroys that which he cannot reproduce
in his lifetime, is net only a coward and a
feel, but he commits a flagrant crime
against uatnre and nature's Ged. I never
see a mau cutting down a fiue tree but I
feel like crying out " step thief ! ! !" What
is his life as compared te the life of the
tree ? If he were te immediately plant
another, net in his lifetime, in that of his
children or his children's children would
the tree attain te maturity. All this he
knows, yet he fells it te the earth and does
net even plant another te replace it for
future generations. Is net this man a
vandal? Surely ; and worse, for he is a
criminal and his seed shall suffer for sins.
If the trees could talk what a pitiful tale
they would tell. Hew they had for ages
drawn moisture from the earth and dis
tributed it through ten thousand leaves
into the air te descend again in showers
refreshing the earth and watering the
gentle flowers. Even the tiny blades of
giccn grass would cry out.
" Oh woodman spare tije tree,
Touch net a single bough,"
Hut they must perish from the earth ; the
fiat has gene forth and we shall seen be
able te say no mero
' Thank Ged I for noble trees !
Uew stately strong and grand
These bannered giants lift their crests
O'er all this beauteous land.".
.They will be cut down and geno and the
shifting sands alene will mark where they
once steed. The bleakness aud barren
ness of death will cover the earth, the sun
pour down his vertical rays and the scorch
ing winds unchecked howl ever the stcr
rile plains.
I lear yen will think I am becoming ex
cited ever this subject, and I de warm up
a little when speaking or wiiting of the
inurder of the beautiful trees which in
atrocity is little short of human murder
itself. . But it is net fine phrases or grand,
eloquent expressions we want in this case,
but facts, cold arguments te convince the
uureasening and the ignorant. The vora vera vora
ceus monster who threatens te devour all
our young timber in his insatiable maw is
the railroad interest of the United States.
Last year there were 101,000 miles of rail"
way in this country, and this year wc are
building 10,000 miles of new railway. AH
these reads have te be tied with compara
tively young timber. I have net at Jiand
an estimate of the number of ties used per
mile, but the annual consumption is very
large. Some years age te build 71,000
miles of railway required 184,000,000 tics.
Tics have te be replaced evcry seven
years, and it is fair te set down the num
ber of ties required annually for future
consumption at 100,000,000. As every ene
knows, railroad ties are cut from young
timber, the trees being from 8 te SO iuches
in diameter, and this demand strikes at
the very source of our timber supply.
It is a fact that the fences of the United
States have cost mere than the land, aud
they are te day the most valuable class of
prepci ty in the United States, exeep
buildings, railroads aud real estate in
cities. Te keep up the fences lOquires an
nually au enormous consumption of timber.
The 123,000 farms in Kentucky lequire
150,000,000 pintls of fence te enclose them.
The number of rails required is set down
at 2,000,000,000, costing $75,000,000. Te
repair and keep in geed order the fences
in this one state alone, costs annually $10,
000,000. Illinois, a comparatively uew
state, has $200,000,000 invested in fcuc'S,
but it costs her only about $300,000 an
nually for repairs, many of her fences
being constructed of wire. The whole
value of the fences in the United States
may beset down at $2,000,100,000, and its
costs $100,000,000 annually te keep them
in repair.
The city of Chicago alene last year em
ployed 17,800 men in handling lumber.
There were 500 clerks, 4,000 woed-workcis
2,000 sailors, 1,000 men te lead and unload
the vessels, and 10,000 men te handle and
prepare the lumber for market, besides
300 proprietors. The lumber brought te
Chicago in 1891 exceeded 2,000,000,000
feet and would have leaded ene train of
cars 2,000 miles long. Ne Ipss than 800
squares miles'ef land were stripped of tiees
last year te supply the Chicago market
with lumber. These figures are indeed
appalling and may well alarm any one as
te the future source of our timber supply.
There is no hope of any diminution in the
future, for Chicago will lequire mere
lumber this year than she did last. The
demand is ever increasing and the supply
ever diminishing. Between the two the
end must come seen and the grand old
forests disappear. After the Saginaw,
Muskegon, Monomenee, Manistee and
Lu'dingtcn sources are exhausted the
Recky mountain slope and Washington
territory will be stripped of their forests,
and then we will have all that is worth
taking. Every year we demand 8,000,000
acres ei trees ana plant less than 1,000,000
acres te replace them. The ejnd is se
plain even a feel may read it as he runs.
The Bloodhound Beem.
Colonel JacK Haverly'a Latest and Great t
Scheme.
Derrick Dedd.
Last week Colonel Haverly, the Napo
leonic theatrical manager, made a con
tract with Edwin Beeth for ene thousand
consecutive performances for five hundred
thousand dellais, and the next day called
en that eminent tragedian with bis face
beaming with satisfaction.
"Give thee geed day, ancient," said
" the only Iago," affably ; " you seem te
have beard some geed news ?"
' I have," said the manager, eagerly,
"and, besides, I've just struck the great
est idea cver heard of in the theatrical
business. Thebiggest thing out, I assure
you."
"Seme new advertising scheme, I sup
pose ?" said the great anthetie scene
chewer, with a pelite yawn.
" Net exactly but I'll explain. Yeu;
see of all the combinations' I've had en
the read this year, nothing has begun te
pay like the deg Uncle Tem."
"The what?" as'ied the pride of the
stage.
" Why the Unde Tem's Cabin troupe,
with tlie bloodhound effects, you knew.
Why, it's the biggest thine I ever struck.
Tire troupe has been performing in San
Francisce for the past mouth te ' standing
room only.' lluudreds turned away every
night. AU en account of the dogs, tee.
Nothing like a deg star te draw, my dear
sir." aud the great showman laughed very
heartily, indeed.
" I congratulate "
" I knew you would be glad te hear it,"
interrupted the colonel; "and new I'll
give you my new scheme I will just
tickle you te death. I've cabled te St.
Petersburg this morning for a dozen mere
Siberian bloodhounds, and I'm going te
have theei support you en the legit."
" W-ha-t," gasped the paralyzed star.
" Will will you be kind enough te repeat
that again."
"Don't misuuderstand me. Beeth,"
continued the manager, hastily. " I don't
piopese te bill them as the principal at
traction ever you ; net iu the least. My
design is simply te introduce the bleed
hounds into your performances work 'em
in here and there, yeunnderstand in such
a way as te make our great Shakspearean
revival just boom through this country,
aud no mistake."
" Oh ! it is is it ?" said Beth grimly.
" Exactly ; I'll put a first-rate adapter
en your repoiteire te morrow. New what
is your idea in regard te " Hamlet," for
instance. Couldn't wc crowd 'cm into the
first act anyhow."
" Oh ! by all means," said the trage
dian, struggling with his emotion, "going
te wedge in a runaway nigger, tee ?"
" Well, no : I don't see hew we could
manage that, exactly," said Haverly,
thoughtfully. "Tweuldn't be realistic, you
knew. New let's see hew would it de
te have one hound chained te a pest in the
tower scene, where he could bay at the
ghost ?"
" Just the thing admirable !" said the
actor, with a sinister expression about the
eyes.
"And then iu the tc.iue with your
mother I mean the queen. Hew would
it de for the hounds te smell out Polenins
behind the arras, and yank him around
the stage by the luff of his trousers for
five or ten minutes. Don't you think that
would sorter whoop up the audience?"
" I should think it would," said the
tragedian, grinding his teeth.
"And then there's Othelle. Instead of
smothering Desdemona, which I always
thought was a snide sort of assassination
pnyway, hew would it appear te have her
escape out of a back window, te be chased
across lets by the hounds, the biggest deg
carrying the handkerchief in his mouth te
identify the scent, as it were ? We could
add another scene, where she could Le
treed iu a practicable apple tree or some
thing. Hew does it strike you ?"
"Oh ! magnificent, superb ! Ge ahc:td !"
hissed the histrionic celebrity.
" Or perhaps it would be mero sensa
tional te have Desdemona crawl under
the bed and have the dogs drag her out
by a bite-proof india rubber bustle. That
would btighten up the act considerably
seems te me."
"Shouldn't be surprised," sneitcd the
star.
"I don't exactly see our way te doing
much with the dogs in Macbeth," said
the manager, reflectively, "unless we
could fix up ene as belonging te Duncan
aud have it smell the bleed en Lady Mac
beth s nana, ana go ier her te rapid
music. That ought te satisfy the public,
I should imagine."
" Way up," assented Mr. Beeth, with a
sardonic smile, " Is that all ?"
" That's all rve-thoughfef se far, ex
cept Iiomee and Juliet' and ' Henry V.'
My idea is te have Remee chased out of
the back yard by the des two or three
times during the balcony scene, aud
finally biing down the house by coming
en with a ceuple of sections of stovepipe
en ever hi-i legs. Aud then as te Falstaff,
we inns'; try te- work eyer the text se as
te admit of his being driven across the
stage five or six times by the whole pack,
the effect ending in a dummy Falstaff
being yanked en and tern te pieces by the
purps down by the footlights pieces of
liver inside, you sec. Don't you think it
would cause the public te take a fresh
interest in Shakspcarc, and work up a
regular furore in the legitimate, and
But, Great Scott I Mr. Beeth, what's
the matter ? What makes you leek that
way ?"
Oh ! its nothing nothing, I assure
you," said the tragedian, huskily. "Colo
nel, where can I meet yen te-night as late
as possible ; some place where we shall be
sure net te be interrupted. I want te sec
you alone alone, mind you !" and the
great actor laughed in a manner peculiar
te Iago in the last act. "Hew would thrce
o'clock te-morrow morning and the stage
of Beeth's theatre suit you ? I should
feel mere at home there."
"Why really I certainly of course,
I geed morning," and the mystified
manager haitily withdrew and walked
off, muttering te himself : " What the
blazes is the matter with Ned ? Leeks
kinder wild. Guess he must be' out of
sorts this morning. These stars are in
fernally cranky, sometimes."
Meanwhile Mr. Beeth was engaged in
writing a note te the leader of the orches
tra, requesting him te be en band at the
hour specified with three violins and a
basscen, as he intended te kill a man and
needed a little rapid music.
