Onr Esteemed Contemporaries.
Their Estimable Relation With Each utber
mad -With the hWBcw."
Examiner.
As the gather of the Itelligekcer wu
scarcely out of bis s wad ling clothe In
1861, he may he excused for saying that
the editor of the Examiner, as a state sea sea
ater, " betrayed hi3 constituents and vio vie
lated bis instructions," meaning that we
were instructed te vote' agaxntt the repeal
of the tonnage tax and then voted for its
repeal. This, of coarse, if net true, as
the records show, and the memory of
these old enough te remember the circum
stances all knew. .
Kdlter Ulrstaad As a State Senater.
Sew Era, April 8, 1832
The editor of the Expreu knew the ex.
nesures he was about te make involved
c!iargcs"(as was stated at the time), " of
such a character no innocent wenia lie
uuder them ;" that " if they could net be
bustaiucd the parties implicated in them
could prosecute us for libel and make us
pay dearly Ter such outrageous delama delama
lien ;" hence the precaution was taken net
only te have the facts written up by a
lawyer, but passed upon by lawyers, in
order that there should be no legal risk
taken in printing such column " leaders "
as that of October 1, 1861, from which the
following extract is a fair sample :
"Te the shame and reproach of Lancaster
county It must be said that her two Senators
ijne. A.IIicstand and Wm. Hamilton.... and
ler four representatives.. ..were In this cor
rupt combination te plunder the state and
pockuttlierewu.ru el their Iniquity. They
knew their constituents desired them te op
pose the repeal of the tonnage tax. The con
vention or their party, which nominated them,
passed resolutions instructing them te oppose
U. Yet net one ei them raised a voice against
this outrage upon the rights et the taxpayers
of the commonwealth, out all actually con
nived at it, and two of them voted for it, white
the ether.-) voted for theSunburyand Erie bill,
-with the lull knowledge that Its passage was
lden titled with the bill ler the repeal of the
tonnage tax, and that both measures were in
tended te inure te the benefit et the same cor
poration, at the expense et the public. That a
large sum of money was paid ter bribing the
legislature is well known; the snm paid te
each senator for the supportef these measures
was $5,000, and for each member el the Heuse
et Representatives S1.0C0 except these- who
violated the instruction of their constituents,
whose consciences were mollified by an addi
tional thousand."
It is creditable te the management of
the Eipreit who enlisted their services, as
well as te the legal talent of the gentle
men Hen. I. E. Hiestcr, Hen.- O. J.
Dickey and AV. H. Brown, esq., who
wrote and approved such journalistic col cel
umbiards us legitimate for public informa
tion, that the challenge, repeatedly given,
te test the truth of the allegations before
a ceuit and jury was never accepted.
True, a suit was brought under pressure
of friends who said the parties implicated
must vindicate themselves or get off the
ticket, but the suit was withdrawn and
the costs paid by one of the attorneys for
the prosecutors seen after their defeat.
Admits lie Wasn't Libelled.
Examiner.
Mr. "Warfel's editor has at last come out
from under cever, and admits that Messrs.
Brown and Heister rendered valuable aid,
as " legal risks" were te be taken, in
printing column leaders. Well that is at
least a kind of a confession. And for
ability and shrewdness in dodging the law
of libel appearing te make charges and
net making them, has seldom been equaled
and had Messrs. Brown and Heister con
tinued editing, they would have acquired
great fame.
Won't Ban a Ticket This Tear.
New .Era.
When our contemporary assumes that
"W. F. Beyer, esq., will of course, be the
iVetc Era candidate " for county solicitor,
it speaks entirely upon the responsibility
of its own fertile imagination. The New
Era has no candidate for any of the coun
ty offices te be filled this fall and dees net
propose te be the organ of any
peisenal contest where a principle
is net involved. It has already indicated
its policy en the gubernatorial, judicial.
congressional and legislative questions,
and will pursue such a course as it may
deem expedient te secure the nomination
of candidates for prison inspectors who
will be in accord with the reformatory
measures of prison management hereto
fore advocated by us and se auspiciously
inaugurated by Mr. Burkhelder ; but se
far as the ether county officers are con
ceded we intend that the candidates shall
have a fair light in an open field.
Kasilt Proves. it U easily proven that ma
larial fevers, constipation, torpidity of the
liver and kidneys, general debility, nervous
ness, and m-uralglc ailments yield readily te
thlq great disease conqueror, Hep Hitters. It
repairs the ravage el disease by converting
the feed into rich bleed, and it gives new Ji:e
and vigor te the aged and infirm ulways.

Visible Improvement.
Mr. Neah Bates, Ehnira, N. Y., writes:
" About four years age I had an attack of bil
ious tever, and never lully iccevercd. My di
gestive organs were weakened, and I would
be completely pi estratcd for days. After using
two bottles et your Burdock Bleed Bitters the
improvement was se visible that 1 was aston
